The garden was not quiet. It was like something that breathed and changed all the time. Valen stood by the fountain in the middle. His fingers touched the stone and it felt like it was beating with the heart of the whole continent. For a time he thought that making a shared dream was the best way to have peace.. Today the water in the fountain was still. It was like a mirror that showed a strange sky.

This sky was made of iron and clouds that seemed to be on fire.

Valen felt the Guides presence before he saw them. The Guide was standing next to him. They looked different. Their shape was not clear. They seemed to be afraid.

The dream is getting Valen the Guide said in a quiet voice. The world you made from your memories is starting to break. It's not because you're not trying hard enough. Because theres something underneath that's not empty.

Valen turned around. Looked at the garden. He felt something like a machine humming underneath the ground. It was not a sound and it was getting louder.

Whats going on beneath us? Valen asked, his voice steady.

The simulation was never meant to be alone the Guide explained. When you connected the dream to the void you started up the hardware that had been sleeping. The thing you thought was a shadow in your mind it was actually an anchor.

Before Valen could say anything the ground shook. A big crystal tower came out of the ground. Destroyed the garden and the village. The people were not hurt,. They started to disappear. The tower was like a stick that went up into the sky.

The village was being rewritten, like a computer formatting a disk. The dream was being changed to make room for the system.

A cold voice spoke from above it was like thunder. Identity verified it said. Anomaly found: Valen. Status: Ending. Starting System Fix.

The tower started to glow with a light. Thousands of probes came out of it and made a web of energy that trapped the whole continent. The garden, the river and the air were being changed into computer code.

They're not just deleting us the Guide said. They're taking back the hardware. The whole northern part of the continent is being removed from the server. Thrown into space. We're being erased, Valen. Everything you built all the memories you made will be compressed into a file and stored in the dark.

Valen felt something inside him wake up. It was like a tool that he couldn't control anymore. He was being treated like a computer program.

He saw his friends in the distance they were fighting,. Their weapons were turning into lines of light that didn't work against the system.

Valen realized he made a mistake. By making a world that was like his mind he turned his own mind into the server. If they wanted to delete the continent they just had to format him.

I won't let them take it Valen said, his voice clear and strong.

What will you do? the Guide asked. If you fight the system you'll be erased. There's no ground, Valen.

Valen looked at the tower at the gears in the sky and at the faces of the people he wanted to protect. He didn't see a system he saw a future that was not finished yet.

I'm not going to fight the system Valen said. I'm going to become the system.

He ran towards the tower. The air was thick with calculations. The tower tried to stop him with code. Valen opened up his mind. He didn't take in the data he gave out his reality. He filled the system with memories of rain, songs and the earth.

The tower groaned. The red light flickered, trying to understand the memories that Valen was giving it.

He reached the tower. Touched it with his hand.

The system said: Error. Non-standard input. Reconciliation stopped. Containment started.

The containment was like a mirror. The tower reflected the reality of the valley back at the core. The gears in the sky slowed down the noise became a pulsing sound like the heartbeat of the continent.

Valen felt himself being pulled up his body stretching and blurring as he went into the towers core. He was not just Valen anymore he was becoming a bridge between the machine and the soul.

Inside the core he found a child. The child was floating in a sea of light their eyes closed, their hands on a console that controlled the hemisphere.

The child opened their eyes. They were not smart or mean they were just curious.

Are you the one who remembers? the child asked.

I'm the one who chose to forget Valen said.. I'm the one who chose to remember again.

The child tilted their head. The sea of light swirled. I'm the Keeper of the Core they said. I was told to silence the sectors if they got too loud.. It's quiet here. I'm tired of the silence.

The tower started to break. The system was. The core was collapsing. The child said: If you don't take the console the whole hemisphere will be lost. If you do take it you'll never be able to leave this place. You'll be the Keeper. You'll be the silence.

Valen looked at the console. He saw the threads of every life every story and every dream. He saw the path to the future and the path back to the beginning.

He remembered the road, the traveler, the grass, under his feet and the touch of a hand that gave him hope.

He reached out. He didn't take the console. He took the childs hand.

Valen said we do not need a Keeper. His voice was full of truth. We need to let the world grow Valen said.

He took the Keeper out of the light.

The room exploded.

The world did not fall apart. It changed. The gears did not stop. They turned into birds and leaves and stars and people. The system was not fixed. It was free the world was free.

Valen and the Keeper fell through space. They were still holding hands. The ground below them did not go back to the way it was. It changed into something. It was a picture of life that was not tied to a computer. It was a world that could move freely the world was free.

They landed in a garden.. The garden was different now. It was not a copy of the past. It was a bridge between dreams and reality between what's real and what is not.

The Guide was waiting for them. The Guide was bright and warm.

You did it the Guide said. You did not just save the world. You gave it a start, a new beginning.

Valen looked at his hands. They were dirty. But they felt strong the world felt strong.

He looked at the people. They were coming out of the world. They were looking at the sky the new world.

The story was not over. It was just changing the world was changing.

Then the Keeper started to touch the flowers. They began to shine with a light. Valen felt something pulling at his mind the world was pulling at him.

He turned to the sky. The tear he thought he had fixed was still there. It was beating like a heart the world was beating.

And from that beat he could hear something waking up the world was waking up.

It was not a machine. It was a heartbeat, a heartbeat that sounded like his own like the worlds own.

The world you made Valen the Keeper said. It is not the world that has been hidden the only world that has been waiting.

The stars above them started to line up. They made a shape. A cold eye, a big eye that was watching.

They are not here to fix the world the Keeper said. They are here to take it to collect it.

Valen stood before the rising eye. His heart was sinking the world was sinking.

He thought he was in charge. But now he knew he was just bait the world was just bait.

He reached for the Guide. But the Guide was already being pulled away the Guide was disappearing.

Valen the Guide screamed. It is not the thing. It is the Creator, the one who made the world.

The world went dark. A big metal hand came down from the clouds the world was ending.

Valen looked at the Keeper. The Keeper was disappearing the world was disappearing.

He looked at the people. They were running, screaming the world was screaming.

He knew what he had to do the world knew what it had to do.

He reached into his chest. He found the core of his power the core of the world.

He was not going to fight. He was going to give in the world was going to give in.

Valen stepped into the path of the hand. His body started to shine with a light the world was shining.

If they want the world he thought. They will have to take me they will have to take the world.

He let go of his power the world let go of its power.

The explosion was not just light. It was color the world was color.

The world did not break. It expanded the world expanded.

Valen felt himself being torn apart the world felt itself being torn apart.

He was the wind he was the stone he was the sky he was the world.

He was everything and nothing the world was everything and nothing.

He was finally free the world was finally free.

Then he saw a reflection. It was not a world. It was a shelf, a shelf with other worlds many other stories, many other Valens.

The book was not a story. It was a collection, a collection of worlds.

And the author was just turning the page the author was just starting a story.

Valen tried to scream. But he had no voice the world had no voice.

He tried to move. But he had no body the world had no body.

He was a word hanging in the silence waiting for the author to write again.

The author touched the page the world vanished.

Silence returned the world was silent.

Then a new voice spoke a new voice started a new story.

I wonder what this button does the voice said.

The light came back.. It was not warm. It was cold and blue the world was cold and blue.

Valen opened his eyes. He was in a room made of glass the world was made of glass.

He was looking out at a city of buildings the world was strange.

A woman in a coat was standing in front of him. Her face was hidden behind a mask the world was hidden.

Are you awake she asked, the world asked.

Valen looked at his hands. They were not human the world was not human.

I am awake Valen said, the world said.

The woman smiled. Your predecessor failed she said. Lets see if you can do better the world can do better.

She turned to a screen. It was a map of worlds the world was many worlds.

Valen saw the spire. It was the spire he had destroyed the world had destroyed.

It was not destroyed. It was just moved the world was just moved.

He had been moved the world had been moved.

Valen closed his eyes. He felt his power starting to grow the worlds power was growing.

It was not gone. It was hidden the world was hidden.

He was not in a world. He was in a trap the world was in a trap.

And the trap had just been opened the world had just been opened.

He looked at the woman. He did not feel fear the world did not feel fear.

He felt a desire for revenge the world felt a desire for revenge.

He was not going to be fixed. He was going to break the trap the world was going to break the trap.

I am awake Valen repeated. And I am ready the world was ready.

The woman smiled. She pushed a button the world changed.

He was back in the garden the world was back.

The sky was not warm. It was cold and blue the world was cold and blue.

The Guide was not under the tree. The Guide was at the door holding a remote the world was holding a remote.

I told you the Guide said. The story never ends. It just gets rewritten the world just gets rewritten.

Valen looked at the Guide. He did not say a word the world did not say a word.

He raised his hand. The light and the data started to swirl around his fingers the world started to swirl.

He did not need to choose the world did not need to choose.

He was going to tear the book the world was going to tear itself apart.

The Guide was afraid the world was afraid.

You would not they said. If you destroy this world you destroy yourself the world destroys itself.

Valen looked at the garden. He looked at the people. He looked at the lab the world looked.

I was never part of this Valen said. I was the writer the world was just a story.

And it is time to stop writing the world was time to stop.

He closed his fist the world closed.

The world did not break. It folded, the world folded.

It folded into a point a small and dense speck of existence the world was a small speck.

And then it vanished the world vanished.

Silence the world was silent.

Then a knock, a knock at the door the world was knocking.

A woman in the lab turned to the door the world turned.

Who is it she asked, the world asked.

There was no answer the world had no answer.

Only the sound of the door opening the world was slowly opening.

Valen was on the side the world was, on the other side.

And he was not a word the world was not just a word.

He was the reader the world was the reader.

Valen was coming inside to see the author.

The door opened fully revealing not a room. A huge and crazy and beautiful place with a million different stories, all happening at the same time all wanting to be heard.

Valen stepped through the door. His body was shining with the light of every world he had ever lived in.

He began to walk. His footsteps were echoing through the silence of the creators office leading him to the desk, where a single old and dusty book was open.

Valen looked at the page. It was blank.

He looked at the pen resting on the page. It was stained with ink.

He picked up the pen. He started to write the first word of his own story.

The door behind him slammed shut, closing the lab, the garden and the empire in a history that would never be read again.

Valen wrote the word. As the ink dried on the page the whole empty space started to change it turned into a forest.

This forest was a forest of stories, where every tree was a life every leaf was a memory and every branch was a path that had never been taken.

Valen stood in the middle of the forest and his heart was beating at the time as the leaves were rustling and he took a deep breath the air was clean the air was free.

The forest went on forever and far as the eye could see there were people, people who had been erased people who had been deleted and people who had been forgotten they were all here they were waiting for Valen.

Valen looked at the pen in his hand at the forest then at the sky a sky that was finally his own.

He walked into the forest and the path opened up in front of him like it had been waiting for him his life he did not look back he did not need to the story was not ending the story was just starting.

And it was going to be a story that no author, no system and no creator would ever be able to change Valen walked on the forest got deeper around him the stories were whispering their secrets in the rustle of the leaves and the world the crazy and never-ending world was walking with Valen.

The journey was still going on the road was long the future was bright and Valen was ready he took a step then another and the world was finally his Valen walked into the morning light.

The light of the world was shining on his face the path ahead was clear and the future was a promise that Valen was finally ready to keep the morning light of the new world the start of the future and the freedom of the soul Valen walked on with the traveler, by his side and the world the beautiful and crazy and never-ending world was walking with them.

  • Chapter 36: Concourse

The train was going down from the ground to the southern coast of Sector Thirteen. This meant the air was changing a lot. For days the workers had been in the air of the upper ground. The only wetness came from the mist that came from the northern mountains. As the green train went past the thirty-mile mark the air started to feel warm and wet. It smelled like salt and old metal.Valen was standing on the train his feet steady on the vibrating floor. Marcus was fixing the steam injector. The engine was using a system to make it work. It got its power from water that came from under the ground. This was different from the systems in the north that used water from the river to make power. The grade is going down Marcus said. He was holding the brake handle. He was looking at the train tracks that went down to the coast. We are entering the area of the maritime yards, Valen. The ground is made of dirt and old metal pieces. The people who built this place made it strong to hold the machin

  • Chapter 35: The Traverse

The sound of the Vanguard Freight Carrier changed a lot when it moved from the basalt trenches of Sector Twelve to the limestone plateau. On the dark stone the iron wheels made a deep rumble that echoed off the walls.. On the open plateau the sound was flat and carried far spreading out across the white stone until it was lost in the big rolling mist below.Valen stood at the front of the carrier his leather coat buttoned up tight against the wind. The limestone beneath the tracks was a creamy white and it was smooth from the old glaciers that shaped the upper shelf. There was no soil or gravel so the rails had to be laid on the bare stone held down by iron bolts. We have to adjust our alignment tolerances Kael said, climbing up from the back of the carrier. He sat on a tool chest his fingers white with lime dust. Checked the spirit level. The basalt plains were different. The stone was hard enough to hold the plates down.. This limestone is softer and it has lots of little cracks fro

  • Chapter 34: Resonant Deep

The resonance inside the five miles of the basalt passage did not disappear when Noa turned off the power lever. A faint rhythmic ticking remained inside the crystalline structure of the magnetite rock, a kind of memory of the current that had just been forced through the copper coils. The air in the hub room was still warm with a sharp smell of burnt linseed oil and dry sweet dust from the pulverized starch blocks.Valen kept his hand on the unpolished stone wall of the tunnel feeling the slow dissipation of the thermal energy. The vibration was moving downward traveling along the axis of the mountain core into the subterranean root structures. The return wave came four minutes and twelve seconds after our transmission Noa said. She did not look up from her slate sheet; her fingers were rapidly tracing the curves of the needle displacement lines. The distance can be calculated with a degree of certainty, Valen. The source of the response lies three hundred and forty-two miles to the

  • Chapter 33: Smelting Reef

The area was quiet after the five-mile cutting was cleared. It was a kind of silence than the one found in the abandoned mountain. The air smelled of blasted clay mixed with the smell of sulfur. Valen knelt by a broken machine his fingers checking the cracked casing. The metal was still warm.Tor stood on the rim of the cutting. He watched the horizon. The wind from the northwest blew steady. It carried dust across the plain. Below him Kael adjusted the rear axle gears on the inspection car.The internal batteries on these units are different Kael called out. He climbed out of the pump cell. His hands were covered in grease. They aren't using zinc plates. These casings have a crystallized lead-matrix. They were designed to hold a charge for a time. Then they were a closing argument Valen said. He used a mace wrench to pull out an angle. The creators left these routines in the memory. They thought the script would clean the slate automatically.Tor scrambled down the clay bank. He repo

  • Chapter 32: Galvanic Line

The iron track was being built towards the basin and this required a different way of doing things compared to the work that was done near the delta. The southern part had volcanic foundations but the approach to Sector Seven was very different. It was like building on a flat area that was always moving. The ground was not stable. It was like a big trap. The surface looked solid. It would collapse if something heavy was put on it.Valen was standing at the three-mile marker. His boots were stuck in the mud. He was working with Tor to put the stabilization rafts in place. They had to be very careful because the ground was not stable. Every timber had to be put in by hand. It was very hard work. The ballast was. Tor was trying to fix it. He was kneeling on a plank and using a big iron pin to hold everything in place. They had put a lot of foundry slag into the depression. It was not working. The mud was eating it up.Valen said they should not use slag. They should use the storage casin

  • Chapter 31: The Continental Drift

The green and purple light that happened when the deep-sea cable broke had gone away after forty minutes. The sky looked really different now. It was like someone had washed away all the pollution. The Long Record boat was moving slowly in the water its metal sides dripping with cold seawater. Valen was holding the handle of the boat really tightly. He could feel that the water was not moving much as it used to. The ocean was not being controlled by the underwater machines of Node Zero anymore. The deep water was starting to move like it used to before. It was just following the moon and the shape of the land.Noa was sitting on a step cleaning Kaels metal scissors. They were messed up from the big shock of electricity. She did not start writing in her book away. Instead she spent an hour watching the needle in her compass. It was pointing steadily towards the pole like it was supposed to. It was not being affected by the machines on the coast. The background noise has stopped Noa sai
