The first thing Shen Rui sees after opening his eyes is a corpse hanging from the city gate. The second is his own name carved beneath it. Transmigrated into the body of a disgraced young lord, Shen Rui inherits a starving city, an empty treasury, a broken army, and a family condemned to die. Outside Blackstone's walls, war rages. Inside, nobles hoard grain while desperate citizens eat tree bark. Worse, the Northern Kingdom is marching toward them. Shen Rui should have died like his predecessor. Instead, armed with knowledge from a far more advanced world, he begins rebuilding everything: agriculture, medicine, industry, military strategy, and trade. But every improvement attracts enemies. Soon he discovers the famine was deliberate, the war was engineered, and someone within the empire has been waiting for Blackstone to fall. Now Shen Rui must choose. Submit to a dying empire... or build a kingdom strong enough to bury it.

Chapter 1

The Man Who Woke Beside A Corpse

The first thing Shen Rui understood was that he was breathing someone else's air.

His lungs burned. His ribs screamed with every shallow inhale. The ceiling above him was cracked and water-stained, and somewhere beyond the broken walls, a bell was tolling with the slow, mournful rhythm of death.

He tried to move. His body refused.

"Don't," a voice whispered.

A woman's voice. Trembling. Raw with grief and terror.

Shen Rui turned his head, and even that small movement sent lightning through his neck. The room swam. He saw her then, kneeling beside the bed like a ghost made of silk and shadows. Lady Qiao. The name surfaced from somewhere deep in his fractured mind, rising through layers of memories that did not belong to him.

Her face was beautiful once. Now it was hollow, her eyes red-rimmed, her hands shaking as she pressed a damp cloth to his forehead.

"You should be dead," she breathed. "They said you were dead."

"I don't..." His voice came out wrong. Deeper than he expected. Rougher. "I don't understand."

She flinched at the sound of his voice. Her hand withdrew from his face like she had touched fire.

"You sound different," she whispered.

Shen Rui swallowed. The motion hurt. Everything hurt.

"Mother," he said, and the word felt foreign on his tongue.

Lady Qiao's face crumpled. She grabbed his hand, her grip desperate, her nails digging into his skin. "Don't speak. Don't move. The guards are still searching. They think you're already dead."

"I'm not dead."

"No." Her laugh was broken, hollow. "You're not. And that's the problem."

Shen Rui forced himself to sit up. The room tilted dangerously. He gripped the edge of the bed, his fingers sinking into rotting straw. Through the broken wall, he could see the city gate. And hanging from that gate was a corpse.

A man. Young. Dark hair matted with blood.

A face that looked exactly like his own.

"What..." His stomach heaved. "Who is that?"

Lady Qiao didn't look. She couldn't. She stared at his hand instead, her tears falling onto his skin. "Your cousin. He volunteered."

"Volunteered for what?"

"To die in your place."

The room seemed to shrink around him. The walls pressed closer. The bell kept tolling, each ring a hammer against his skull.

"Why would anyone volunteer to die?"

She finally met his eyes. In her gaze, he saw something that made his blood run cold. Not grief. Not relief.

Accusation.

"Because your father asked him to," she said. "Because you are the heir. Because if the imperial court discovered you had escaped, they would execute every member of this family. The servants. The guards. The children."

Shen Rui's hands trembled. These were not his memories. This was not his family. But her pain was real. The corpse was real. The blood staining the city gate was real.

"I don't remember," he said slowly. "What happened. Why they want me dead."

Lady Qiao's expression flickered. Doubt. Fear. Hope.

"You hit your head," she said. "You were injured during the arrest. The physician said you might not wake. We thought..."

She couldn't finish.

Shen Rui looked at the corpse again. The man's face was swollen, distorted by death. But the resemblance was there. The same jaw. The same brow. A body double, prepared in advance. That meant someone had planned for this. Someone had known the arrest was coming.

"Why did they arrest me?" he asked.

Lady Qiao shook her head. "You were accused of embezzling military supplies. Stealing grain meant for the army. The evidence..."

"What evidence?"

She hesitated. Her hand tightened on his. "Ledgers. Witnesses. Your personal seal on the transfer orders."

Shen Rui's mind raced. None of this made sense. He was not this person. He was not this world. He had died in a traffic accident, crushed by metal and glass, and then...

He woke up here.

In a body that was supposed to be dead.

"The execution order," he said slowly. "It says all members of the Shen household are to be presented for execution."

Lady Qiao nodded, her face pale as ash. "By dawn."

"How long until dawn?"

She looked toward the window. The sky outside was still dark, but the horizon was beginning to lighten. A faint gray glow crept over the rooftops.

"Two hours," she whispered. "Maybe less."

Shen Rui swung his legs off the bed. The movement nearly made him black out. He gripped the wall, breathing hard, waiting for the world to stop spinning.

"What are you doing?" Lady Qiao asked.

"I need to see the rest of the family."

"They're hiding. Your father is too weak to move. Your sister..."

She stopped.

"What about my sister?"

Lady Qiao's face twisted with fresh grief. "She's not here. She went to the market before the arrest. We haven't seen her since."

Shen Rui felt something cold settle in his chest. Fear, he realized. Genuine fear for a person he had never met. A sister whose face he didn't know.

"Then we need to find her."

"We can't." Lady Qiao grabbed his arm, pulling him back. "If you leave this house, the guards will see you. They'll know the body on the gate is a fake."

"Then we find another way."

"There is no other way." Her voice cracked. "Don't you understand? This is the end. The Shen family is finished. The best we can do is die with what little dignity remains."

Shen Rui looked at her. Really looked at her. This woman had given up. She had accepted death. But something in him refused to accept it. Some stubborn, desperate part of him that had survived one death already and was not ready for another.

"I'm not going to die here," he said quietly.

Lady Qiao stared at him. "Who are you?"

The question hung in the air between them.

Shen Rui opened his mouth to answer, but before he could speak, the door burst open.

A servant stood in the doorway, her face white with terror. "My lady! Soldiers! They're coming up the street!"

Lady Qiao's hand flew to her mouth.

Shen Rui heard it then. The sound of boots on stone. The clatter of armor. The voices of men who were not asking questions.

They were coming to kill.

"Hide," Lady Qiao hissed. "Under the bed. In the wardrobe. Anywhere."

Shen Rui didn't move. His eyes were fixed on the corpse hanging from the gate. His double. His sacrifice.

"Mother," he said slowly. "How many guards are there?"

"I don't know. Does it matter?"

"It matters." He turned to face her. "Because if there are only a few, we might have a chance."

Lady Qiao's face went still. "A chance at what?"

Before he could answer, a voice boomed from outside. A soldier's voice, sharp with authority.

"By order of the imperial court, all members of the Shen household are to be presented for execution by dawn!"

The servant screamed.

Lady Qiao grabbed Shen Rui's arm. "The back entrance. There's a hidden passage behind the kitchen. Go now."

"What about you?"

She smiled. It was the saddest thing he had ever seen.

"I'll hold them off," she said. "Now run."

Shen Rui didn't run.

Because he had just realized something. Something that made his blood turn to ice.

The soldier outside had said "dawn."

But the sky was already beginning to lighten.

Which meant the execution wasn't coming.

It was already here.
