I loosened my hold on Tessa and she shoved me away only for me to turn and watch Conrad march into the hallway with his wife after hearing their daughter's cry.

“What is it, Blair?" Her mother asked, the concern visible in her eyes.

Tessa took three steps away from me, not daring to meet my eyes while I watched her intensely, waiting for her to spill the tea.

"I caught them making out right here." Blair cried again and I sneered.

"Oh my God!” Her mother shrieked, clapping a hand over her mouth.

“What insolence." She proceeded to cast a dirty look at us.

"Come with me boy.” Her father ordered and walked past us, down the hallway and into an open door by the right.

Tessa hurried ahead, walking right behind him like I would eat her up if she was left with me.

I started to move towards the door.

"So disgusting." I stopped in my tracks after hearing Blair's comment.

"What, beggar? Want to hit me or something?" She provoked but I swallowed down the words hanging at the tip of my tongue and hobbled forward into the open door.

“Here! Sign." Conrad slapped the papers on the table the moment I entered.

I looked at the table and moved to take up the thing they called a pen, not having the faintest idea how it is used.

“Conrad. I…I don't think I want to do this anymore." Tessa said, shaking her head in the process, her eyes wide with fear.

My head snapped towards the direction where she stood hugging herself tightly as she trembled slightly.

“What nonsense do you mean by that?" Her father thundered, banging his fist on the table.

I watched her jump in fright.

“I… he…” She stuttered and shook her head.

I narrowed my eyes on her lips.

"Do you want to keep bringing ill luck to us by refusing to officially get married?” He asked, banging both fists on the table this time.

She shook to her toes and began rocking herself forward and backward.

“I don't think I will want to get married to her either." I said boldly, holding my head high.

“What!?" Conrad's eyes bulged like he was being strangled by an invisible hand.

“You don't think you want to get married to her, but you could make out with her in the hallway?" He jumped to his feet and rounded the table, walking towards me.

“You misunder…”

A fist was sent flying towards my face and I dropped to the floor, feeling like my jaws would snap into two.

"Conrad!” She cried out, running towards us but not daring to interfere.

"How dare you try to scam me after a mutual agreement?" He stood astride me.

I laid still even as he fisted on the collar of my badly shaped cloth and threw another punch to my left eyes.

“Conrad!" She cried again.

“I will never get married to her against her wish." I declared, holding myself back from wincing.

“I will sign the PAPERS!" She shouted from where she stood and Conrad's hands hung mid-air.

“Say what?" He asked, glaring at me.

“I…I will sign them!" She repeated.

“Good." He hissed, letting go of my collar.

I laid on the floor, eyes to the ceiling.

“Tessa!" I called out as loudly as I could.

“The moment you sign those papers … there's no going back.” I huffed.

I wasn't looking at them but I could feel the hesitation in the air.

“Fine!" She mumbled and I breathed before struggling to sit up.

I watched her sign the papers with the strange object they called a pen, her tears falling rapidly on to the papers and soaking them up.

After she was done, she looked towards my direction and swallowed before walking towards me.

Bending her knees, she hooked her hand beneath my arm and struggled to raise me up.

“You signed the papers." I reminded her the moment I got hold of my cane.

She nodded once and looked away.

Hobbling towards the table, I took hold of the pen just like I had seen her do and scanned through the documents before writing my name beneath hers.

“Good!" Conrad exclaimed and snatched the papers from me before exiting the room.

Tiny stars exploded in my vision, the ache spreading from my left eyes to my head.

“Oh my God! Are you okay?" She was by my side in seconds.

I worked my jaws when the loud beat of her heart infiltrated my brain again.

Why could I only hear her heart beat and no one else's?

I grunted a response and shifted away from her a bit.

“You are hurt?" Her voice shook as she stared at my neck, avoiding meeting my eyes.

“Whatever you saw…forget it.”

She looked at me then, her green eyes dilated.

"Your eyes, they…"

“I said to forget it!" I clenched my jaw, irritated that my gum would choose this moment to get itchy as the flowery scent of her blood invaded my senses.

I walked slowly towards her while she stood rooted to the ground.

“Whatever we have ends on paper." She snapped her head up to meet my eyes and I stopped in my tracks.

I was just about to ask if I could trust her.

I was just about to confide in her.

“Fine." I spat but that didn't mean I was going to grant her a divorce later.

“I'll show you to our room later in the day." She had her fists clenched tightly by her side as she spoke to me.

“Come, let me treat your wounds."

“I am fine." I snapped.

How was I to tell her that I needed a sip of blood to instantly heal my wounds?

She stared at me for a bit before lowering her gaze. If only she could stop lowering her gaze.

“Where is she?" Her mother's voice broke the silence just then before she rushed into the study.

“What the hell are you doing here when the guests have long arrived and are waiting to be served?" She thundered.

Before I could say Jack, she had slapped Tessa across the face.

Tessa stumbled backwards, her eyes wide and shimmering with tears as she held her cheek.

I watched Tessa try not to cry and my vision switched to red and back to normal again.

“How dare you?" I bellowed.

She turned to look at me, face clouded in anger.

“You filthy…” She moved but I struck her first, the sound of my palm loud against her cheek.

“Tessa?" I limped towards her ready to understand what just happened when the door pushed open. "There you are.” An unpleasant voice said.I whirled around to see the Governor's wife inside, she had her hands clutching her purse as she stared down at Tessa with pure disgust in her eyes. "Good day Ma.” I raised my brow at Tessa's sudden shaky voice. Turning back to face her, I bit my inner cheek at the way she was bent at the waist, her hands clutching each other nervously behind her. "And you are?” I turned back to the woman with a cold stare. "Draven.” She raised a brow at me."Draven Dexter.” I completed, hating the fact that she looked superior. "You aren't from City X, are you?” She moved slowly to the couch Blair got up from minutes ago."No.” I hissed between my teeth. What does she want here? "I heard you got married to our Tessa.” She smirked, her eyes swiftly landing on Tessa's still bowed frame before staring straight into my eyes. "Yes.” "And that you are a cra

  • Her weakness

She stared at me, wide eyed and cheeks as red as fresh blood. I swallowed, my throat tightening as my grip on her shoulders hardened. “I…” She tucked her lips in and cast her eyes to the floor. I forced a chuckle. "You still think me a monster.” "Will you protect me after you have recovered?” She asked instead, raising her eyes to look me straight in the eyes.Suddenly she didn't look weak anymore. She looked like she could grab Blair's face and give her a slap or two. "And what if I never recover?” I narrowed my eyes at her, holding back a grunt of pain. "Will you stay forever then?” Her eyes turned fiercer. My eyes turned to slits as I watched her study my face."Mmhm.” I nodded and jerked when I felt my joints stiffened accompanied with needle-like pains in my stomach. "Then I'll stay loyal to you." She responded and looked away, offering her neck to me in what looked like a last offer. Holding her closer to me than necessary, I took a long sniff of her neck and felt her s

  • Fate

"Mum!" The brat called and hurried past me towards the red faced middle aged woman by the door. “How dare you bump into the first lady? Are you blind?" He yelled at the old lady from earlier. As if that was not enough, he raised his hand and brought it down on her face making her head swing violently to the side. I held back a growl. How dare he hit a servant of the Royals? I found myself moving forward when a hand held me back. “Come with me." Conrad ordered and dragged me out of the sitting room, up the stairs and into another room.“Tessa?" I breathed the moment I saw her bent over Blair's legs buckling her shoes. She pursued her movement but got a knock on the head from Blair."Don't you dare try to ruin my party.” She ordered and I saw Tessa nod quickly. "Look here boy.” Conrad pulled me to face him.I frowned down at him. "You are nothing but a disabled beggar, living off my wealth so you must know your place.” He poked my chest. "After this party, you'll go back there

  • Serve the guests

"How did you know? Who are you?” I demanded, yanking the annoying wire out of my ears. She straightened and looked me straight in the eye. "The djinn is also with you.” She stated and made a second bow. "You don't need to do anything, I and my girls will take it up from here.” She clapped and ladies dressed in maid uniforms filed in, each bowing their greetings to me as they proceeded to carry out their task."Who are you?” I asked her, walking briskly towards her. She squinted at the plate in her hand before turning to look at me. "I was sent.” Was the only response she gave to my question. 'You need to begin the search for the jaded ring.’ I hissed to shut him up, but he just continued to speak.'You need to do it now while they are all occupied.’ he persisted. I walked out of the kitchen, pretending to hobble as I leaned into my cane. Where should I go from here?” "Hey you, come here." Conrad called me from the corner. I clenched my fist and gritted my teeth. Why couldn'

  • You won't hurt me

I slammed the door shut and the main door burst open. “I am not taking my bath in there." “But there is nothing wrong with it." She argued meekly behind me. “I can't fit in there." I held my cane tight. Has she been bathing there all her life? Now I really wish I could snap the necks of those suckers. She sighed and I turned to look at her. Her shoulders had dropped and her head hung low. “I need to hurry back to complete the chores, the engagement party will start in an hour." “What engagement party?" “Blair's engagement party." She peeked up at me. My lips curled in distaste. “I'll find a way to sneak you into the visitor's bathroom but you have to hurry." She said with a sense of urgency. I nodded once at her and watched her pick up the bag and hurry out while I followed after her.In twenty minutes I was done with her standing watch as I changed into one of the nasty old clothes given to me. “Done." I called out from behind her and she turned to observe me before givi

  • Awake and growing crazy

I have been locked in for two days, in pain and in great thirst. Today I had finally managed to fight off my thirst and sat up a little too weak when I got startled by the voice in my head. 'You did a great job, son.’ My reddened eyes bulged and I looked around. I was sure as hell I didn't imagine that voice. “What are you? Show yourself." I commanded in a cracked voice. ‘Fear not son. It is I, the djinn of your clan. I was sent to help you.’ I watched a smoky substance evaporate from my body before materializing into a shadowy being right in front of me.My jaw tensed at the realization. I know I should bow, but I was too angry to even look him directly in the face. “I did not want to do this.” ‘Aahh! You were led to the right place son. I can perceive that the royal jaded ring was somewhere around here a few years back.’Is he kidding me right now? Did he just say a few years back? I held my peace and watched him. ‘You did a good job.’“Get out." ‘I have…’"Leave. I do
