Chapter 1

Flash marriage

"What is such a person doing in a place like this?"

"OMG! Do you think he is dead? Should we call The City Affair?”

“I just saw a twitch in his brow!"

I winced when the last lady screeched before forcing my eyes open.

“Oh my God! He is alive!"

“Stay back! I am not sure he is sane."

I blinked and stared back at the bright sky. What was I doing awake by this time of the day and why was I sleeping outside?

I struggled to sit up but winced when a sharp pain shot up through my left leg.

I felt my head spin as I struggled to understand my environment and the strange faces staring back at me.

I forced myself to sit up and a wooden cane rolled off my body to the floor.

Instinctively, my hand reached out to it and I grabbed it before supporting myself up.

I looked around and tried opening my mouth to talk when the people around me started to disperse till I was left alone.

“Hey you!"

“The young man with a cane!"

I furrowed my brow and narrowed my eyes at the middle aged couple marching towards me.

They looked like I owe them a huge amount of debt.

What did they want with me?

“What's your name?" The middle aged man asked the moment they were right in front of me.

“Draven. Why?"

“Draven. Are you married?"

“No."

“Good. You'll be getting married to our daughter at this moment."

What!

I blinked at them, tilted my head to the side and observed his face.

A human. I was in a human city. It all made sense to me now.

Were all humans like this? Irrational and out of their senses?

I barked out a laugh, ignoring the burns in my ribcage and the needle-like pains in my left leg.

“What? What's funny?" The woman beside him asked, her face twisted in an ugly scowl.

"Do you know who I am?” I asked, barely holding back a growl as I felt the edges of my vision darken.

Who did these humans think they were to order me around just because I was in a bad shape with a cane?

The couple looked at themselves for a minute and broke into a loud mocking laughter.

I felt my hand tighten around the handle of my cane till it threatened to snap.

I narrowed my eyes and increased my concentration but for some reason I could not read their thoughts.

Fuck my father for doing this to me!

How did he think that sending me here this way was a good idea when several other members of the clan would willingly want to take on the mission?

“What are you if not a…” The woman paused to size me up and suddenly I felt my cheek burn up with shame.

"...begger?” She concluded, a sly smirk on her red lips.

The man thrusted a large brown envelope at me but I just stared at it, too angry to move.

“Come on boy, take the document. We need to get her married real quick and you are just the perfect candidate." His lips parted in something that looked more like a snarl than a smile.

I looked down at myself and felt a white rage burn through me.

How did I not know that I was dressed in nothing but torn clothes, with no shoes on and a fake dirty body?

How was I a perfect candidate!?

“Take the damned documents! We know you need this, that's why you are here in front of the Marriage Bureau."

Wait! What?

I twisted my neck back and the strange feeling of shame washed through me anew.

I would surely strangle my father if I should get my hands on him.

What was he doing now? Laughing at the cruel fate he had single handedly set up for me? Going out to conquer more clans?

Fuck!

“You are wasting our precious time. We have a guest to attend to."

I wanted to yell at them to leave me the fuck alone but I only blinked at the large brown envelope which had the word “Marriage lincese" written boldly on it.

I might look poor and disabled now but only I know what I am. What if their daughter was the truly disabled one? And they didn't look like they were well to do either.

I can't imagine myself stooping so low to get married to a human, a disabled human at that.

“What city are we in?" I asked before I could think and watched both humans crunch up their noses in disgust.

“He doesn't even know where he is. So pathetic." The man scoffed.

“City X." The woman responded, her eyes narrowing at me.

“City X?” I repeated before touching my supposed pocket but there was not a dime.

How the hell am I to survive in a strange human city?

Looking down at the brown envelope, I swallowed, suppressing my pride as I asked. “Would you give me a place to stay then?"

I have got to start from somewhere if I really want to get the job done and give my father a piece of my mind.

They both hissed at me in unison, the disdain in their eyes growing a notch.

“Not until you take the papers." He pushed it towards my stomach.

I took it, despising the way my fingers trembled from the strange feeling of nervousness.

“..."

I watched the man lean in to whisper into the woman's ear.

“...we need a helping hand with chores especially now that Blair will be getting engaged to the son of the governor." She responded to her husband whispering with a loud voice, eying me.

I looked down at the now almost mangled envelope in my hand. I'll need to teach these humans a lesson the moment I am back to the original me.

“Take this.”

I stared down at the strange object in his hand before looking up at the man's frowning face with a frown of my own.

“What is this?" I asked and heard a collective gasp from them.

“Oh heavens!" The woman placed a dramatic hand on her forehead.

“You mean you don't know what a pen is?” The man asked, with wide eyes.

Whatever that means.

I thrusted the envelope back at him, too angry to react.

“If I don't see the woman I am getting married to, I won't consent." I forced the words out of my mouth.

I wouldn't mind committing to a human as long as she wasn't disabled just for the cause.

“Hmmm…you mean this?"

I heard a faint sniff the moment the couple separated and my eyes widened.
