I stood uncomfortably, shaking with restrained anger as I watched the scene unfold.

Tessa had led me into their lowly mansion after staring speechlessly at me for a few minutes in front of the Marriage Bureau.

She had made me stand in the corner of the sitting room and promise not to intervene no matter what happened.

“Do you not have any bones in you!" Her supposed sister snapped, eyes wide as she palmed her forehead in fake frustration.

“You good for nothing Human!" Her mother snarled, hitting Tessa with the silky material in her hand.

I clenched my cane even tighter.

“I am sorry! I am sorry! I didn't mean to…”

"Oh shut up and get it down right!”

I turned my face away from the trio and caught the eyes of the man leaning against the doorframe.

Straightening, he walked towards me with eyes so dark that I felt my body begin to angle backwards in the bid to escape him.

"Boy!” He boomed and from the corner of my eyes, I noticed the trio had stopped whatever they were doing.

I clenched my teeth and forced my eyes to stare at my feet.

“What do you think you are doing standing idly at the corner?" He asked, standing right under my nose.

I cleared my throat.

“I don't know my way around and my wife said to wait here."

There was a minute of silence before I got startled by the roar of laughter that came from him, accompanied with that of his wife and daughter.

I wanted to wrap my hand around his throat and ask him what was funny but I held myself in, watching him in forced silence until he doubled over and started coughing.

“Wife, huh?"

I turned back to meet the sneering face of Tessa's sister.

“I think you've found yourself a lover boy, Tessa and he is so sweet." She said condescendingly.

I watched Tessa bow her head in shame, her clutch on the piece of clothing she held grew tighter till I felt like I was growing out of breath.

What sort of embarrassment is this?

"Alright, alright. Go on boy. Go on and observe your wife, it's your honeymoon by the way.”

Tessa's sister covered her lips to hold back another sneer while my supposed wife blinked a fresh tear from her eyes.

Gritting my teeth, I turned my back to them and hobbled out of the room, my breath coming out in small puffs.

My father is crazy but sending me all the way here in this condition was the craziest he had ever been.

I don't know how I would do it, but I need to find a way out of here and back to my clan.

At least I haven't signed the papers yet, some other member of the clan can come hunt for the royal jaded ring theirselves. I have had enough for a lifetime.

“Where do you think you are going?" The loud broken voice stopped me in my tracks.

I blinked at the dim hallway.

What?

“Where do you think you are going?" She asked again before I began to hear the stomping of her foot on the floor.

I felt her stop and I turned in time to catch her tiny hands before they met my chest.

She was huffing, her cheeks puffed and her face stained with tears.

“Where were you heading to?" She screamed in my face.

I almost winced at the pain from my leg but schooled my expression.

“Out." I responded coldly.

She blinked at me and soon she was barking out a strange laughter mixed with tears.

“I am so unlucky that even a disabled beggar would want to abandon me." She cried, biting the back of her hand.

I felt my ears grow large with a strange ringing to it.

“What do you just say?" My eyes blazed but she wasn't still looking at my face.

"I am so unlucky that even a disabled…"

With a growl I let go of her hands and held her chin firmly, my jaws clenched.

How dare she call me disabled and a beggar to my face?

“I dare you to repeat that Tessa.” I challenged her, forcing her to look into my eyes.

"Repeat that, and watch what I would do to you." I growled in her face but blinked rapidly when I saw her tiny frame begin to shake.

As if I was latching onto coal, I let her chin go and hobbled backwards.

“What are you?" Her eyes were bulging this time.

“What?" I asked, my throat growing dry and my gum starting to get itchy from thirst.

“Yo…your ey…eyes!” She screeched.

"Your eyes! They are…" I moved without thinking and soon, I had my hands over her lips, suppressing her scream into muffled moans.

"Shhh!” I hissed, my vision turning red.

I could feel it, the awakening of the real me. I blinked twice, then thrice when a strange sound floated into my ears.

Dum! Ba-dum! Dum!

What the hell was that?

I looked down at Tessa and she too looked up at me with wide eyes.

Suddenly, I could see the veins in her neck pulsating and the sound of her rushing blood floated into my ear, invading my senses.

Lowering my head slowly, I tilted her head backwards and pressed my ear to her chest ignoring the frantic muffled sounds from her lips.

The strange sound was from her chest.

Her heart?

How did I forget that unlike us, humans have an organ called ‘the heart'?

"Oh my God! You guys are so disgusting!” Blair cried from the door.

“Tessa?" I limped towards her ready to understand what just happened when the door pushed open. "There you are.” An unpleasant voice said.I whirled around to see the Governor's wife inside, she had her hands clutching her purse as she stared down at Tessa with pure disgust in her eyes. "Good day Ma.” I raised my brow at Tessa's sudden shaky voice. Turning back to face her, I bit my inner cheek at the way she was bent at the waist, her hands clutching each other nervously behind her. "And you are?” I turned back to the woman with a cold stare. "Draven.” She raised a brow at me."Draven Dexter.” I completed, hating the fact that she looked superior. "You aren't from City X, are you?” She moved slowly to the couch Blair got up from minutes ago."No.” I hissed between my teeth. What does she want here? "I heard you got married to our Tessa.” She smirked, her eyes swiftly landing on Tessa's still bowed frame before staring straight into my eyes. "Yes.” "And that you are a cra

  • Her weakness

She stared at me, wide eyed and cheeks as red as fresh blood. I swallowed, my throat tightening as my grip on her shoulders hardened. “I…” She tucked her lips in and cast her eyes to the floor. I forced a chuckle. "You still think me a monster.” "Will you protect me after you have recovered?” She asked instead, raising her eyes to look me straight in the eyes.Suddenly she didn't look weak anymore. She looked like she could grab Blair's face and give her a slap or two. "And what if I never recover?” I narrowed my eyes at her, holding back a grunt of pain. "Will you stay forever then?” Her eyes turned fiercer. My eyes turned to slits as I watched her study my face."Mmhm.” I nodded and jerked when I felt my joints stiffened accompanied with needle-like pains in my stomach. "Then I'll stay loyal to you." She responded and looked away, offering her neck to me in what looked like a last offer. Holding her closer to me than necessary, I took a long sniff of her neck and felt her s

  • Fate

"Mum!" The brat called and hurried past me towards the red faced middle aged woman by the door. “How dare you bump into the first lady? Are you blind?" He yelled at the old lady from earlier. As if that was not enough, he raised his hand and brought it down on her face making her head swing violently to the side. I held back a growl. How dare he hit a servant of the Royals? I found myself moving forward when a hand held me back. “Come with me." Conrad ordered and dragged me out of the sitting room, up the stairs and into another room.“Tessa?" I breathed the moment I saw her bent over Blair's legs buckling her shoes. She pursued her movement but got a knock on the head from Blair."Don't you dare try to ruin my party.” She ordered and I saw Tessa nod quickly. "Look here boy.” Conrad pulled me to face him.I frowned down at him. "You are nothing but a disabled beggar, living off my wealth so you must know your place.” He poked my chest. "After this party, you'll go back there

  • Serve the guests

"How did you know? Who are you?” I demanded, yanking the annoying wire out of my ears. She straightened and looked me straight in the eye. "The djinn is also with you.” She stated and made a second bow. "You don't need to do anything, I and my girls will take it up from here.” She clapped and ladies dressed in maid uniforms filed in, each bowing their greetings to me as they proceeded to carry out their task."Who are you?” I asked her, walking briskly towards her. She squinted at the plate in her hand before turning to look at me. "I was sent.” Was the only response she gave to my question. 'You need to begin the search for the jaded ring.’ I hissed to shut him up, but he just continued to speak.'You need to do it now while they are all occupied.’ he persisted. I walked out of the kitchen, pretending to hobble as I leaned into my cane. Where should I go from here?” "Hey you, come here." Conrad called me from the corner. I clenched my fist and gritted my teeth. Why couldn'

  • You won't hurt me

I slammed the door shut and the main door burst open. “I am not taking my bath in there." “But there is nothing wrong with it." She argued meekly behind me. “I can't fit in there." I held my cane tight. Has she been bathing there all her life? Now I really wish I could snap the necks of those suckers. She sighed and I turned to look at her. Her shoulders had dropped and her head hung low. “I need to hurry back to complete the chores, the engagement party will start in an hour." “What engagement party?" “Blair's engagement party." She peeked up at me. My lips curled in distaste. “I'll find a way to sneak you into the visitor's bathroom but you have to hurry." She said with a sense of urgency. I nodded once at her and watched her pick up the bag and hurry out while I followed after her.In twenty minutes I was done with her standing watch as I changed into one of the nasty old clothes given to me. “Done." I called out from behind her and she turned to observe me before givi

  • Awake and growing crazy

I have been locked in for two days, in pain and in great thirst. Today I had finally managed to fight off my thirst and sat up a little too weak when I got startled by the voice in my head. 'You did a great job, son.’ My reddened eyes bulged and I looked around. I was sure as hell I didn't imagine that voice. “What are you? Show yourself." I commanded in a cracked voice. ‘Fear not son. It is I, the djinn of your clan. I was sent to help you.’ I watched a smoky substance evaporate from my body before materializing into a shadowy being right in front of me.My jaw tensed at the realization. I know I should bow, but I was too angry to even look him directly in the face. “I did not want to do this.” ‘Aahh! You were led to the right place son. I can perceive that the royal jaded ring was somewhere around here a few years back.’Is he kidding me right now? Did he just say a few years back? I held my peace and watched him. ‘You did a good job.’“Get out." ‘I have…’"Leave. I do
