CHAPTER 3: THE WEIGHT OF CHAINS

That evening, Raiden walked through the quiet Elthorn compound, his mind occupied with troubling thoughts. His past life had been one of weakness. But Flocki, the man he truly was, would not take the kinds of insults he had taken before. He would find strength, and he would make those who had mistreated him answer for it.

As he was about to step through the portal to the next mission, a voice stopped him.

“Raiden! Where are you off to in such a hurry?”

The voice was womanly, but he sensed the sharpness in its tone. Selene, his sister-in-law.

"Mother says you are running off again to play the hero. You should just give up, Raiden. You will never be more than a servant in this family."

Raiden met Selene's gaze, clear, unwavering. "We will see about that."

Selene stepped closer, her voice now low enough that only he could hear. "Just don’t die out there, Raiden. Mother wouldn’t want you to miss the next round of chores."

Raiden kept his fists tightly clenched but his composure intact. "I'm not dying anytime soon, Selene." He returned her smile, but he was anything but happy.

"We'll see." Selene's laughter filled the hallway as she walked away.

Raiden felt anger welling up inside him, but he pushed it down. There would be a time to deal with Selene and the others, but that was not this time. Right now, Raiden had one mission: survive. And then, one by one, he would make them all regret underestimating him.

With the thought of it seared in his mind, Raiden walked out into the night, prepared to confront the outside world, the first part of his plan to take back the honor they had stripped from him and make it once again his own.

Raiden stepped out of the Elthorn compound, letting the cool breeze wash over his face as the sun dipped low, casting a warm orange glow. Despite the frailty of his new body, his expression was set in calm determination. *I might be weaker now, but this isn't my real life,* he thought, clenching his fists with resolve. *Proving I'm more than their punching bag is lesson one in this world.*

Ahead lay the E-rank dungeon Lady Morgana had mentioned, just outside the city. Designed for those with little power, it was considered a beginner’s challenge. Though his combat instincts were sharp, this world and body were new, with unfamiliar power limits. Yet, Flocki's strategic mind was still his greatest weapon, and he knew it could turn the tide in any fight.

As he approached the dungeon entrance, a merchant watched him with an amused look. “Heading into the dungeon alone, are you?” the merchant asked, noting Raiden’s unassuming appearance.

Raiden gave a curt nod. “I’m not like most.”

The merchant chuckled, casting a skeptical glance at Raiden's basic gear. “Well, good luck. You’re going to need it.”

Without another word, Raiden walked on, eyes fixed on the dungeon’s dark mouth. *Even with a weapon that feels unfamiliar, it’ll have to do.*

Inside, darkness wrapped around him, filled with the scent of wet stone and the distant sounds of creatures lurking in the shadows. It was eerily familiar, reminiscent of battles from his past life. Back then, he’d had an army at his side. Now, he was alone. But if he’d learned anything, it was that he could fight on his own.

A low growl echoed through the dungeon. Two lizardlike creatures, venom dripping from their fangs, slinked toward him, their eyes gleaming. Raiden's lips curved into a grim smile. *At least I don’t have to wait long.*

One creature lunged. Raiden sidestepped, driving his sword through its neck in a swift, practiced motion. The second hesitated before charging, but Raiden pivoted, slicing its midsection with deadly precision. As the creature fell, Raiden exhaled, his breathing steady. *Once, I was the strongest. But even now, skill counts for something.*

The deeper he ventured, the tougher his opponents grew. Finally, he reached the dungeon’s heart, where a towering ogre stood, its leathery skin and massive club casting an imposing figure. Raiden took a moment to assess the creature, knowing this was no ordinary foe.

The ensuing fight was brutal and unrelenting, with Raiden deftly dodging the ogre’s heavy swings, seeking weak points with each strike. After a series of swift, precise blows, he brought the creature down, its massive body collapsing in a heap. Exhausted, Raiden sank to his knees, the fatigue settling in.

After gathering the materials he needed, he returned to the market. The merchant’s eyebrows shot up as he saw Raiden approach. “Back so soon? And still in one piece?”

Raiden dropped the loot on the counter. “As agreed.”

The merchant inspected the items and handed him a small pouch of coins. Raiden felt a rare flicker of satisfaction. True, it was a small victory, but it was his.

As he arrived back at the Elthorn estate, however, that satisfaction was short-lived. Standing in the entryway, arms crossed, was Lady Morgana. She regarded him with a cold smile. “I trust the dungeon wasn’t too difficult?”

Raiden clenched his jaw, handing over the coin pouch reluctantly.

She smirked. “Remember, Raiden, everything you earn belongs to the household. Think of it as rent for the shelter and food we provide.”

Holding back his anger, Raiden walked away, seething. *They think I’m weak. I can play along for now. But one day, they’ll regret underestimating me.*

He strode toward the stables, shoveling away the muck as his thoughts churned. *This isn’t the end. I’ll surpass them all.* And as he looked to the horizon, he vowed silently: *My time will come, sooner than they think.*

Chapter 89: Spreading Corruption The air grew heavier as Raiden and his companions traveled from the wreckage of the destroyed Vault. The once-crisp heavens above were now striped with ribbons of dark energy, faint but building in intensity. The void’s reach was spreading, a palpable reminder of the Prophet’s stolen shard and its devastating potential. Kaela interrupted the tense pause, her voice shrill. “The skies didn’t look like this yesterday. Tell me it’s not the shard already causing this.” Draco’s golden eyes narrowed as he flew low above the group, his voice reverberating in their minds. “The shard’s power is not contained. With the Prophet controlling it, its influence extends unrestrained, upsetting the balance further.” Rurik hefted his axe, scowling as he searched their surroundings. “So what now? We seek him down and hope he hasn’t already converted it into some world-ending weapon?” Raiden’s jaw tightened as he strode at the front of the group, the Twin Blad

  • The Escape

Chapter 88: The Escape The chamber rattled furiously, fissures spiderwebbing over the obsidian walls as the Vault began to collapse. The runes that once pulsed with a balanced light now flashed irregularly, their energy destabilized by the Prophet’s theft of the heavenly shard. “Move!” Raiden roared, his voice cutting through the rumble of moving stone. Kaela was already rushing toward the passage they had entered through, her bow still grasped tightly in her hand. “I don’t need to be told twice!” Rurik followed, his axe slung over his back as he peeked over his shoulder. “This place is coming down faster than I expected! What did that cursed shard do?” Draco’s voice rang in their brains, calm yet persistent. “The shard’s removal has destabilized the Vault’s magic. If we do not leave immediately, it will bury us.” Raiden held the Twin Blades tightly as he followed the others, his eyes scanning the collapsing chamber for any trace of remaining void energy. The Prophet’s t

Chapter 87: The Ember Prophet Returns The Vault’s suffocating atmosphere seemed to tighten around them as Raiden led the way deeper into the convoluted tunnels. The gentle hum of old energy rang in the walls, but it was layered by something far more sinister—a throbbing malevolence that seemed to follow their every step. Kaela went a few yards behind, her bow ready and an arrow nocked, her sharp eyes scanning the shadows. “This place feels worse than before. Like something’s watching us.” Rurik held his axe, his look severe. “If it’s watching, it can come closer. I’d want to have a word with it.” Draco’s voice rumbled softly in Raiden’s head. “The Vault reacts to the void’s presence. The Prophet is near. Be ready.” Raiden strengthened his grasp on the Twin Blades of Equinox. Their energies pulsed softly, the balance of light and darkness within them steadying his nerves. “He’s not just near—he’s waiting. This is a trap.” Kaela scowled, her gaze shifting to Raiden. “I

Chapter 86: The Architect’s Warning The mark’s fading brilliance left the chamber shrouded in a cold, oppressive quiet. Raiden stood frozen, the strange voice still reverberating in his thoughts. The words were like a splinter in his thoughts—Beware the Architect’s whispers. Kaela drew closer, her words bursting through the calm. “That... wasn’t the same voice as the others. Who was it?” Raiden’s golden eyes remained locked on the darkening symbol. “The Architect. It’s watching us.” Rurik let out a deep grunt, resting his axe on his shoulder. “Watching? Great. Just what we need—another dark puppet master tugging the strings.” Draco landed nearby, his enormous wings folding against his sides. His golden scales shimmered softly in the feeble light, a stark contrast to the blackness seeping into the margins of the chamber. “The Architect is more than a puppet master. It is the origin of the void’s contamination. Its whispers create confusion, and its intentions shape de

Chapter 85: A Corrupted Guardian The Vault trembled as Raiden, Kaela, and Rurik stepped out of the now-dim chamber. The bright runes along the walls flashed ominously, producing uneven shadows. The faint hum of ancient magic still lingered, but it carried a new, frightening intensity. “This place isn’t just trying to keep us out anymore,” Kaela mumbled, her bow pulled and ready. “It’s waking up. And I don’t think it’s happy.” Rurik grumbled, his axe resting on his shoulder. “Yeah, well, waking up cranky seems to be a theme for everything in this cursed Vault. Let’s just hope we don’t find anything else to smash.” Draco’s golden eyes glittered as he landed heavily alongside them, the ground quivering beneath his weight. “You will find no rest here. The way forward is one of tribulation and agony. The Vault defends its secrets with ferocity.” Raiden tightened his grip on the Twin Blades of Equinox, their energy throbbing faintly in his hands. “Let’s keep moving. If there

  • A Confidential Revelation

Chapter 84: A Confidential Revelation The sounds of the conflict faded, leaving the chamber in an unsettling calm. The last of the void creatures had disintegrated into black mist, their essence absorbed into the obsidian walls. Raiden stood at the center of the Vault, the Twin Blades of Equinox in his hands, their energies humming in perfect harmony. Kaela wiped the sweat from her brow, her bow still grasped tightly. “Is it over?” “For now,” Raiden answered, his voice calm but laced with tiredness. He sheathed the Blades, their energy diminishing as they settled into their resting condition. Draco’s harsh growl rippled through the chamber. “The battle was only the beginning. The Vault holds more than weapons. It holds truths, hidden for centuries.” Raiden stared at the glowing runes along the walls, their light moving and pulsating like a heartbeat. “Then it’s time we learned those truths.” The runes on the walls shifted as Raiden approached the far side of the chamber.
