The man hit the concrete floor face-first.
Two guards held his arms pinned behind his back. He was tall, built like a linebacker, but the men on either side of him were bigger. They hauled him forward another step and let go. He sprawled at the feet of the person waiting in the center of the room.
Black polished shoes. Pressed slacks. The kind of stillness that belonged to someone who had all the time in the world.
The bodyguard looked up.
And his face went white.
Ethan Carter stood over him, hands in his pockets, head tilted slightly. The underground room was cold, lit by a single overhead bulb that cast sharp shadows across his jaw.
"Well?" Ethan said. "You know me?"
The man's mouth opened. Closed. Opened again. His eyes darted to the walls, the locked door, the two guards behind him. Then back to Ethan's face.
"I don't know you," the bodyguard spat. His voice was loud. Too loud. "Who the hell are you? You have any idea who you just grabbed? I run the best security detail in this city. You grab me, you dig your own grave."
Ethan smiled. Thin. Cold. The kind of smile that didn't reach the eyes.
He walked to a black leather chair behind him and sat down. Crossed one leg over the other. Looked at the man on the floor like he was something scraped off a shoe.
"Three years ago," Ethan said, "you put a needle in my arm. Pumped poison into my veins. And then you tossed me into a river in the middle of nowhere." He let the words hang in the cold air. "You don't remember that?"
The bodyguard's jaw tightened. His eyes flickered sideways. Thinking. Calculating.
"Still not going to confess?" Ethan asked. Arms folded. Patient.
Silence.
Ethan stood up. The bodyguard flinched, scrambling backward on his knees.
"I think you need a refresher," Ethan said quietly. He turned to one of his men. "Bring me the syringe."
The bodyguard's breathing changed. Faster. Shallower. He pushed himself up slowly, eyes scanning the room. The walls were bare concrete. No weapons. No tools. Just the locked steel door.
Ethan filled the syringe with a clear liquid. Slow. Careful. Like a doctor preparing a routine shot.
The bodyguard bolted.
He hit the steel door at full speed, slamming his shoulder into it. Kicked it. Once. Twice. The metal rang like a bell. On the third kick, his leg buckled. He crumpled, groaning, clutching his knee.
"Don't play games with me!" he snarled, pressing his back against the door. "My men will come. They'll tear this place apart. They'll kill you!"
"Let them try," Ethan said, walking toward him. "After they deal with what I just gave you."
The bodyguard's eyes went wide. He looked down at his arm. A tiny drop of blood welled where the needle had entered. He hadn't even felt it.
"What — what did you—"
"Fifteen minutes," Ethan said. He crouched down, eye level. "That's how long before your lungs stop working. The same poison you used on me. Fitting, right?"
The man's hands flew to his throat. His mouth opened. No air came. His chest heaved, but nothing filled his lungs. His face turned red, then purple at the edges.
"I'm not like you, though," Ethan continued, his voice calm. Conversational. "I won't throw you in a river. I'll keep you alive. Useful. But only if you do exactly what I say. Every single thing. No questions. No hesitation."
The bodyguard clawed at his own neck. His eyes bulged. Tears streamed down his face. He tried to crawl toward Ethan, dragging his body across the cold floor. His trembling hand touched Ethan's shoe.
"I-I'll d-do it," he choked out. Barely a whisper. "P-please—"
Ethan smiled. "Give him the antidote."
One of the guards stepped forward with a small glass vial. He tilted the man's head back and poured the liquid into his mouth. The bodyguard swallowed. His breathing came back in a ragged, desperate gasp. Then his eyes rolled up. He went limp. Unconscious.
Ethan stood. Brushed a speck of dust off his sleeve.
"Lock him up. When he wakes, he works for me."

The Carter residence. Fairview.
Richard paced the living room like a caged animal. Sandra sat on the couch, arms crossed, her leg bouncing. Neither of them had gone to work. Neither of them could.
The front door opened. Three men in dark suits walked in and stopped in a line.
"Well?" Richard spun on them. "Did you find anything? Someone must have pulled him out. Someone must have seen something."
The lead man shook his head. "No, sir. We went back to the site. The river, the forest. Nothing. We were careful that night. No witnesses. No cameras. No one saw us."
Richard's fist hit the side table. A glass vase rattled. "Then how is he *alive*?"
"We did find something else, sir." The man hesitated. "About his money. His company. Vanguard Group."
Richard stopped pacing. "Go on."
"It used to be called Graves Industries. Run by an old man named Samuel Graves. A martial arts master. No family. No heirs." The man pulled out a folder. "According to public records, Ethan Carter was his adopted son. Samuel Graves transferred everything — every asset, every property — to Ethan before he died. And Samuel Graves passed away about a year ago."
The room went silent.
Sandra exhaled slowly. "So the old man found him in the river. Saved him. Raised him." She looked at Richard. "And Ethan only showed up after Samuel died. Because that's when he inherited everything."
Richard pressed both palms against his eyes. His head throbbed. "One year. He's had one year to build his operation. And he walked into my office like he owned the place."
The sound of the front door opening again made everyone turn.
Logan Foster walked in. Pale. Stiff. He gave a quick nod to Richard.
"Where the hell have you been?" Richard demanded.
"Hospital, sir. I'm sorry. Something came up and I couldn't call ahead. I apologize."
Richard waved it off. "Forget it. Listen. My men confirmed it. The boy is alive. Ethan. Margaret's son. Some old man pulled him out of the river and raised him. Now he's back, and he's rich, and he's coming for us."
Richard stepped closer. His voice dropped. Hard. Final.
"I want every man you have on surveillance. Track his movements. His meetings. His phone calls. Every breath he takes, I want to know about it. Starting now."
Logan nodded. "Yes, sir."
Richard turned back to the window. His reflection stared back at him, hollow-eyed and afraid. But underneath the fear, something else burned.
*You want a war, boy? Fine. I'll give you one.*
