Logan Foster knocked on the office door and stepped inside.

Richard looked up from his phone. "What's wrong with you? You look like hell."

Logan dropped to one knee.

Richard set the phone down slowly. His eyebrows pulled together. "What are you doing?"

"I need to tell you something, sir." Logan's voice was flat. Dead. "Yesterday, Ethan Carter's men took me. Held me in his basement. He injected me with the same poison I used on him three years ago." He swallowed. "He said the only way I get the antidote is if I work for him. So I agreed. I had no choice."

Richard's palm hit the desk. Hard. The coffee mug rattled.

"How?" Richard's voice was a growl. "You're the strongest man I have. The best. And you just *let* him take you?"

"There were too many of them, sir. I was alone. Visiting my wife. They came out of nowhere — ten, maybe fifteen men. All trained. All armed." Logan kept his head down. "No one fights their way out of that."

Richard leaned back. Rubbed his face with both hands. "So what now?"

"I need you to bring in outside help. The Pacific Syndicate. They're organized, ruthless, and they match Ethan's people blow for blow. You hire them, you get more than security. You get men who know how to disappear. How to hurt someone without leaving a fingerprint."

Richard was quiet for a long moment. Then he nodded.

"Get me a contact. Tonight."

---

Sandra slammed the folder onto her desk.

The contract cancellation stared up at her. Vanguard Group. Signature: Ethan Carter. Below it, a leather briefcase sat open, stuffed with hundred-dollar bills. A note was taped to the inside lid.

She ripped it off and read.

*Here's your cancellation f*e. Use it to pay off your company's debts.*

Sandra's scream tore through the office. She swept the briefcase off the desk. Bills scattered across the carpet like dead leaves.

The door opened. Richard walked in, face like thunder. He tossed an identical folder onto her desk.

"That little bastard," Richard spat. "He owned the brand — the perfume line we've been building for over a year. The second profits started climbing, he pulled the plug. Just like that."

Sandra's eyes were red. Her fists shook at her sides. "He's toying with us, Richard. Sitting up there like we're nothing."

"We don't sit still for this." Richard's voice dropped. Cold. Calculating. "We hit back. And we make sure he can't keep coming at us."

"How?"

Richard sat on the edge of her desk. A slow, ugly smile spread across his face. "We go after someone he loves. You remember how he was about his grandparents? The old man and his wife?"

Sandra's lips curled. "Oh, I remember."

---

The arrow split the air and buried itself dead center in the target.

Ethan pulled another from the quiver. Drew. Released. Another bullseye. The late afternoon sun painted the training grounds gold.

Behind him, Aaron Brooks handed over a fresh set of arrows.

Ethan nocked the next one but didn't draw. His eyes stayed fixed on the target forty meters away.

"Aaron. Do you think Logan will actually stay loyal?"

"Yes, sir. He's terrified of you. He won't cross you."

"Fear keeps him quiet for now," Ethan said. He finally drew the bowstring back. Held it. "But my father and Sandra aren't stupid. If Logan tells them about the poison, about the threat — they'll move. They'll plan something."

He released. The arrow thudded into the wood.

"And they'll aim where it hurts."

---

The house in Oakdale hadn't changed.

Same white fence. Same cracked walkway. Same garden bursting with tomatoes and marigolds. Ethan carried a white bag of takeout food in one hand, his other hand resting on the car door.

An old woman with silver-streaked hair looked up from sweeping the porch. Her broom stopped mid-stroke.

"Ethan!" Her face broke open like sunrise. "Baby, you came!"

She walked toward him carefully, one hand on the railing. Ethan met her halfway, opening his arms. She was small against his chest. Light. Like holding a bird.

"Grandma Ruth. I missed you." His voice came out softer than he intended.

"I'm fine, sweetheart. Come inside! I'll make cookies. You still like my cookies, don't you?"

"Always." He smiled. A real one. The kind that reached his eyes.

The living room smelled like cinnamon and old books. Ethan sat on the couch — the same worn couch from a year ago, when he'd visited in secret, still healing, still hiding. Not soft. But warm. Familiar.

From the kitchen, he could hear Ruth humming. The clink of a spoon against a bowl.

Then voices outside. Several of them. And one he knew.

Ethan was on his feet before the door opened.

Two elderly men supported his grandfather between them. Frank Bennett's left leg was wrapped in white bandages. His face was pale but he was smiling — trying to smile.

"Grandpa!" Ethan crossed the yard in three strides. "What happened?"

One of the neighbors spoke. "We were heading to the market. A black car came from the west, fast. Clipped him right on the shoulder. He was walking on the very edge of the road, sir. Barely any room. Whoever was driving had to aim for him."

Ethan's hand curled into a fist at his side. His jaw locked.

*Someone did this on purpose.*

"Thank you for bringing him home," Ethan said. His voice was steady. Controlled. He took his grandfather's weight onto his own shoulder. "Aaron, give them something for their trouble."

Aaron nodded and reached for his wallet.

Inside, Ethan guided Frank to the bedroom. The old man waved off the bed, preferring to sit on the edge with his legs hanging free.

"When'd you get here, boy? Your grandmother must be running around the kitchen like a madwoman." Frank chuckled. Then his smile softened. "You grew up so fast. Too fast. Wish your mother could've seen it."

Ethan knelt in front of him. Took the old man's wrinkled hand in both of his.

"I'm eating well. Living well. I hope you two are doing the same." He paused. "Come stay at my estate. Both of you. You'll be safe there. The world outside — the people around us — they're not kind, Grandpa."

Frank shook his head. Gentle. Firm. "Your grandmother won't leave this house, Ethan. You know that. And I can't make her. We'll be fine. Don't worry about us."

"You were hit today. On purpose. Those men said the driver aimed for you." Ethan's voice cracked at the edges. "Someone wants to hurt you. Please. Let me protect you."

Frank patted his grandson's hand. "I'm alright. Go help your grandmother in the kitchen. She loves it when you're in there with her."

Ethan held his gaze for a long moment. Then he nodded. Stood. Walked out of the bedroom.

But he didn't go to the kitchen.

He stopped in the hallway. Faced the window. Outside, the afternoon light was fading, turning the sky the color of a bruise.

His reflection stared back at him. Cold. Still.

*I know it was you, Richard.*

His fingers pressed flat against the glass.

*You want to play with the people I love? Fine. But you just made a mistake you can't take back.*

*And I'm going to make you feel it. Every. Single. Piece.*
