The screaming didn’t stop until they hit the bottom.

Rivenox expected the bone-shattering crunch of granite or the splash of a stagnant pool. Instead, he felt something suspiciously like memory foam. He bounced once, twice, and then a heavy weight mostly comprised of sharp, divine-grade plate armor slammed directly into his chest.

"Oof! Get... get off! You’re crushing my lungs!" Rivenox wheezed, his face mashed into a pile of oversized, heart-shaped silk pillows.

"Move your foot, Rivenox! My cape is caught in your belt!" Kaelira’s voice was muffled, her helmet clinking against his shoulder as she struggled to untangle herself.

"I can’t move my foot because your knee is currently in my stomach!"

"Well, if you hadn't designed a 'Shame Hole' in your floor, we wouldn't be in this position!"

Kaelira finally managed to roll off him, clattering onto the ground. She sat up, panting, and immediately reached for her sword. It wasn't there. She looked around frantically, her eyes widening as she took in their surroundings.

"Where is my blade? And why... why is it so pink in here?"

Rivenox groaned, pushing himself up from the pile of cushions. He looked up at the ceiling, where the chute they had fallen through was already sealing shut. The maintenance tunnel was no longer a dark, damp passage of stone and gears. The walls were covered in glowing, rose-colored moss, and the air smelled faintly of strawberry shortcake.

"It’s not a 'Shame Hole' anymore, Kaelira," Rivenox said, his voice dripping with defeat. "The system rebranded it. Look at the sign over the door."

A neon sign, flickering in a soft violet hue, hung above the only exit. It read: [THE TUNNEL OF LOVE: MAINTENANCE BYPASS].

"I am going to vomit," Kaelira whispered, standing up and dusting off her armor. "I am actually going to be sick. Rivenox, find my sword. Now."

"I don't have it! It probably stayed up in the throne room or got stuck in the chute," Rivenox snapped, scanning the area. "And even if you had it, you couldn't use it. Look at your hands."

Kaelira looked down. A faint, glowing tether of pink light connected her right wrist to Rivenox’s left.

"What is this?" she hissed, tugging at the magical cord. "Break it! Use your dark magic or whatever and break it!"

"I can’t! Elira, what is this? Explain yourself!"

The violet wisp flickered into existence, wearing a tiny, translucent pair of Cupid wings. "It’s the 'Hand-Holding Protocol,' Boss! Since you both fell into the maintenance sector during a 'Destined Encounter' event, the system has flagged this as a 'Cooperative Bonding Level.' You can't be more than five feet apart until you reach the exit."

"Five feet?" Kaelira’s voice hit a pitch that made the glowing moss vibrate. "I have to stay within five feet of this... this basement-dwelling necromancer?"

"Hey! I’m a Dungeon Master! There’s a professional distinction!" Rivenox retorted.

"You’re a nightmare!" Kaelira shouted. "Elira, or whatever you are, undo this! I have a schedule! I have heretics to purge!"

"Sorry, Lady Hero!" Elira chirped. "The safety locks are on. To proceed, you need to reach the Junction Gate. But be careful! The 'Emotional Sync' is currently at zero percent. If you don't start getting along, the gravity in this hallway is going to get really weird."

Rivenox looked at Kaelira. Kaelira looked at Rivenox.

"I hate you," she said.

Immediately, the floor tilted forty-five degrees to the left. Both of them went sliding across the slick, mossy stone, slamming into the wall.

"Ow! Okay! Fine!" Rivenox yelled, scrambling for purchase. "I like your... your hair! It’s very blonde! Very shiny!"

The floor leveled out instantly.

"Don't you dare use your 'praise defense' on me," Kaelira growled, though she didn't move away from the wall. "We are walking to that gate, we are getting out of here, and then I am finding a way to kill you that doesn't involve rose petals."

"Deal. Just... stop being so aggressive. The floor clearly reacts to your mood," Rivenox said, cautiously stepping toward the neon-lit door. "Come on. The tether is pulling."

They walked in awkward silence through the tunnel. Every few steps, the system would chime, playing a few bars of a romantic ballad that made Rivenox want to crawl into a hole and die. Finally, they reached a massive, circular door made of polished brass and stained glass. In the center of the door was a screen with two palm-shaped indentations.

"A lock," Kaelira said, sounding relieved to see something functional. "I’ll smash it."

"Wait, don't,"

Kaelira punched the door. A giant, sparkling UI box erupted from the brass.

[BINARY LOCK: HEARTBEAT SYNCHRONIZATION REQUIRED.]

[INSTRUCTION: Both parties must place their hands on the scanner. To unlock, heart rates must be synchronized within 5 BPM of each other. Tip: Try thinking about a shared future!]

"A shared future?" Kaelira barked a laugh. "The only shared future we have is me standing over your smoking remains!"

"Well, that’s not going to help the heart rate, is it?" Rivenox sighed, rubbing his temples. "Look, just put your hand on the plate. We just have to match our pulses."

"And how do I do that? My heart is currently hammering because I’m trapped in a pink nightmare with my mortal enemy!"

"Just... breathe," Rivenox said, stepping closer. He placed his hand on the left scanner. It glowed a dull red. "See? Mine is steady. I’ve had three hundred years of administrative stress; I can control my pulse."

Kaelira hesitated, then slammed her hand onto the right scanner. It flashed a violent, jagged orange.

[SYNC FAIL: 62 BPM vs 128 BPM.]

[SYSTEM MESSAGE: The Hero is too 'Tsundere.' Please initiate 'Calming Intimacy' to proceed.]

"The system just called me what?" Kaelira’s face turned scarlet. "Rivenox, what did you program into this thing?"

"I didn't program it! It’s the virus!" Rivenox shouted. "Look, Kaelira, just... close your eyes. Forget I’m a Dark Lord. Think about... I don't know, a puppy? A nice meadow? A very well-organized library?"

"I don't like libraries! They’re dusty!"

"Then think about the Sun-Order! Think about your prayers!"

"I am!" she yelled, her pulse indicator on the door spiking even higher. "But you’re standing right there! I can smell your stupid 'Midnight Musk' perfume!"

"It’s the fog machine, not me!" Rivenox snapped. Then, seeing the door beginning to emit a warning beep, he softened his voice. "Look. Kaelira. If we don't pass this lock, the system is going to try to 'force' a romantic moment. Do you want to know what the next stage is? I saw the manual. It’s 'The Accidental Kiss.'"

Kaelira froze. Her eyes went wide. "The what?"

"You heard me. The system will literally shift the floor to make us collide. So, please. Just... calm down."

Rivenox reached out with his free hand the one not tethered and gently placed it on her shoulder. Her armor was cold, but he could feel the tension radiating off her.

"Just breathe with me," he said, his voice dropping to a low, rhythmic tone. "In for four. Out for four. We’re just two people in a hallway. No heroes. No villains. Just... a guy who wants to fix his computer and a girl who’s really bad at following directions."

"I am not," Kaelira started, but she caught herself. She took a deep breath. Then another.

Slowly, the jagged orange light on her scanner began to smooth out. It turned a soft, golden yellow.

[SYNCING... 75 BPM... 76 BPM... 75 BPM...]

[MATCH FOUND. HARMONY ACHIEVED.]

The brass gears inside the door began to hum, and with a soft click, the massive valves swung open.

"We did it," Kaelira whispered, her hand still on the scanner. She looked at Rivenox, her expression unreadable. "You’re... surprisingly good at that."

"At what? Dealing with panicked heroes?" Rivenox stepped back, breaking the contact. "I’ve had a lot of practice. Usually, it involves more screaming and less breathing exercises."

"Right. Of course." Kaelira pulled her hand away, her gaze dropping to the floor. "Let's just keep moving."

They stepped through the door into a wide junction where several tunnels met. But as they entered the center of the room, a strange, gurgling sound echoed from the shadows.

"What now?" Kaelira asked, her hand instinctively going to her empty hip-sheath.

From the side vents, half a dozen massive, translucent slimes began to ooze onto the floor. They weren't the usual green or gray, however. These slimes were a muddy, sickly shade of teal, and each one was wearing a small, illusory accessory a tattered necktie, a fedora, or a tiny, weeping bouquet of dead flowers.

A new UI box popped up.

[WARNING: ENCOUNTER START!]

[FOE: THE JEALOUS EX-BOYFRIENDS (LEVEL 45).]

[MOTIVATION: They can't stand to see you move on! They will attempt to 'Guilt-Trip' the Heroine and 'Gaslight' the Dungeon Master.]

"You have got to be kidding me," Rivenox groaned. "Rogue slimes? Now?"

"I don't have my sword!" Kaelira cried as one of the slimes lunged at her, emitting a psychic wail that sounded like 'I thought we had something special!'

"Use your light! You’re a Paladin!" Rivenox shouted, ducking as a fedora-wearing slime tried to tackle him. "And watch out for the 'Gaslight' spray! If it hits you, you’ll start doubting your own combat stats!"

"I don't know how to fight without a weapon!" Kaelira ducked under a flurry of teal pseudopods. "I’ve been training with a blade since I was six!"

"Improvise!" Rivenox pointed to a nearby maintenance pipe. "Use that! And I’ll... I’ll do the talking!"

"The talking? Rivenox, it’s a slime!"

"No, it’s a 'Jealous Ex'! It runs on melodrama!" Rivenox turned to the largest slime, which was currently vibrating with rage. "Listen to me, you amorphous blob of insecurity! She’s moved on! It wasn't you, it was... well, it was definitely you! You were clingy and you didn't respect her boundaries!"

The slime wobbled, its teal color fading to a pale, wounded blue.

[CRITICAL HIT: EMOTIONAL TRUTH!]

"It worked?" Kaelira stared, then grabbed a loose brass pipe from the wall. She swung it like a mace, smashing it into a slime that was trying to tell her she’d 'never find anyone better.' "Take that! And for the record, I prefer someone with a skeletal structure!"

"Nice one!" Rivenox cheered, dodging a spray of 'Resentment Acid.' "Kaelira, on your left! That one's trying to remind you of the time you forgot your anniversary!"

"I’ve never had an anniversary!" Kaelira screamed, swinging the pipe in a massive arc that sent teal goo flying across the walls. "I’m a celibate warrior of the Sun!"

"Tell that to the system!"

They fought back-to-back, a chaotic dance of swinging pipes and psychological warfare. Rivenox shouted insults at the slimes' lack of personality, while Kaelira physically dismantled them with holy-infused strikes from her makeshift club.

As the last slime dissolved into a puddle of self-pity, Kaelira leaned on her pipe, breathing hard. Her hair was a mess, and her armor was covered in teal sludge, but there was a fierce, exhilarated glint in her eyes.

"That... was actually kind of satisfying," she admitted, wiping her brow.

"You’ve got a good swing, even with a pipe," Rivenox said, leaning against the wall. "But we need to move. Did you feel that?"

Kaelira frowned. "Feel what?"

Rivenox pointed to the floor. The glowing moss was no longer pink; it was turning a deep, angry crimson. The air, which had been pleasantly warm, was suddenly becoming stifling. A low, rhythmic thrumming began to vibrate through the soles of their boots, growing louder by the second.

"The core," Rivenox whispered, his eyes widening as he checked his internal HUD. "The 'Passion' levels are peaking. The system thinks we’re in the 'Climax of the Second Act.'"

"And why is that a bad thing?"

"Because the core wasn't designed to handle this much 'Romantic Energy'!" Rivenox grabbed her hand voluntarily this time and started pulling her toward the far exit. "The cooling fans are offline because they’ve been replaced by... I don't know, a choir of cherubs! If we don't reach the main chamber and reset the OS, the whole dungeon is going to have a literal meltdown!"

A massive blast of steam erupted from a nearby vent, smelling of scorched chocolate and burning roses.

"Run, Kaelira!" Rivenox shouted over the rising roar of the machinery. "Unless you want to be the first hero in history to be vaporized by the power of love!"

"I hate this dungeon!" Kaelira yelled, her boots clattering as they sprinted toward the glowing red light at the end of the tunnel. "I hate it so much!"

"Save the feedback for the survey!" Rivenox replied. "Just keep running!"

The golden cord tethering their wrists suddenly tightened, jerking Rivenox and Kaelira toward the center of the chamber. The marble floor beneath them didn't just crack; it dissolved, replaced by a shimmering, translucent walkway of obsidian glass that stretched out over an endless, swirling purple nebula."Whoa, whoa! Watch the step!" Rivenox yelled, stumbling as his boots struggled for traction on the slick surface."Rivenox, what happened to your clothes?" Kaelira gasped, her voice reaching a pitch of pure hysteria.Rivenox looked down and nearly choked. His dark, jagged plate armor the intimidating gear of a Dread Overlord had vanished. In its place was a sleek, midnight-blue silk tuxedo with silver lapels and a crisp white cravat. A single, glowing violet rose was pinned to his chest."I’m wearing a suit," Rivenox whispered, his face turning a shade of white that matched his shirt. Rivenox, I’m going to hit Silas with this until he stops breathing. That’s the mechanic.""It’s not that simple anymore," Rivenox said, waving a hand at the floating UI box only he could see. "The system has flagged this as a 'Climax Encounter.' Silas is the 'Rival,' which means he has a three-hundred-percent armor buff fueled by 'Arrogant Confidence.' We can't break through that with a pipe and some shadow-bolts."Kaelira finally looked at him, her eyes narrowing. "Then how do we break it?"Riven

Instead, he found his senior management team gathered around the central scrying pool, which was currently projecting a heart-shaped map of the dungeon."Boss?" Lucar Deepmere, the Lead Sorcerer, stared at them, his jaw dropping so low it nearly hit his velvet robes. "What in the nine circles are you wearing? And why is the Paladin... attached to you?""It’s a long story, Lucar," Rivenox panted, leaning over his knees. "A very long, very pink story.""Rivenox, get your hand off me!" He leaned against the armrest of his throne, trying to look 'brooding but vulnerable' as the system demanded, though he felt more like a man having a public breakdown.
