The elevator descended with a smooth, sickening hum that vibrated through the soles of Rivenox’s boots. The walls, once cold obsidian, were now upholstered in a quilted, velvet-like material that smelled faintly of lavender and expensive stationery.

Rivenox stared at the floor, refusing to look at the tethered Paladin standing inches away. "Okay, look. Before the doors open, we need to talk about the combat mechanics."

Kaelira gripped her brass pipe so hard her gauntlets creaked. "Mechanics? Rivenox, I’m going to hit Silas with this until he stops breathing. That’s the mechanic."

"It’s not that simple anymore," Rivenox said, waving a hand at the floating UI box only he could see. "The system has flagged this as a 'Climax Encounter.' Silas is the 'Rival,' which means he has a three-hundred-percent armor buff fueled by 'Arrogant Confidence.' We can't break through that with a pipe and some shadow-bolts."

Kaelira finally looked at him, her eyes narrowing. "Then how do we break it?"

Rivenox winced. "We have to activate the 'Power of Two' synergy buff. It’s the only thing that overrides 'Rival' protection."

"And let me guess," Kaelira said, her voice dropping into a dangerous register. "To activate it, we have to do something humiliating."

"The system calls it 'Harmonious Devotion,'" Rivenox muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Essentially, our stats double, and our attacks become unblockable, but only if we move in perfect synchronization. The UI is literally suggesting we... well, it’s a ballroom dance, Kaelira. The combat style is 'The Waltz of War.'"

Kaelira stared at him in dead silence for five seconds. "I am going to kill you. I’m going to help Silas kill you, and then I’m going to kill him."

"If we don't do this, he wins!" Rivenox hissed as the elevator chimed. "He’ll wipe the core, Kaelira! Your 'Holy Oats' and your Sun-Order buddies? They’ll be next on his list. Just... just follow my lead. Please. I promise I’ll hate myself more than you hate me."

The doors slid open.

The secondary core chamber was a disaster. Silas 'The Stone-Heart' stood atop the central dais, his massive, spiked mace glowing with a sickly green light as he smashed it against the core’s protective casing. His mercenaries were busy looting the decorative gold filigree from the walls.

"Ah, there they are!" Silas shouted, turning with a predatory grin. "The 'Dungeon Master' and his pet Paladin. I heard you two were getting cozy, but seeing the hand-holding with my own eyes? That’s pathetic, Vantessa. I thought you had standards."

"Silas," Kaelira growled, stepping forward, only to be yanked back by the tether.

"Easy, 'Darling,'" Rivenox whispered, his face burning. "Wait for the prompt."

[BATTLE START: DEFEND YOUR HONOR!]

[REQUIRED STYLE: THE WALTZ OF WAR]

[BGM: 'Symphony of the Smitten']

Violins began to swell from the walls grand, sweeping, and aggressively romantic.

"What is that noise?" Silas laughed, hefting his mace. "You’re bringing a fiddle to a fratricide? Boys, take them apart!"

Four mercenaries charged, their swords leveled.

"Now!" Rivenox shouted. He grabbed Kaelira’s hand the one not holding the pipe and pulled her into a tight spin.

"Rivenox, if you touch my waist, I’ll!"

"I have to! It’s the trigger!"

As Rivenox’s hand found the small of her back, a burst of golden and violet light erupted from the floor. A shimmering aura enveloped them both, and suddenly, the weight of Kaelira’s heavy plate armor seemed to vanish.

"Step, slide, and strike!" Rivenox commanded, his body moving with a grace he didn't know he possessed.

They glided across the floor, moving as one. As the first mercenary lunged, Rivenox pivoted, swinging Kaelira in a wide, elegant arc. Her brass pipe, now glowing with a blinding white radiance, caught the mercenary under the chin with the force of a falling star. He didn't just fall; he flew across the room, trailing glitter.

"Oh my God," Kaelira breathed, her feet moving in perfect sync with Rivenox’s. "I can feel the power. It’s... it’s disgusting."

"Don't think about the disgust! Think about the footwork!" Rivenox ducked a sword swing, pulling Kaelira into a dip. As her head went back, she swung the pipe upward, shattering the shield of a second attacker. "One, two, three! One, two, three!"

From behind a pile of crates, a head popped up. Xavian Trapwell, the dungeon's lead trap designer, adjusted his soot-stained goggles.

"Boss? Is that you?" Xavian yelled over the music. "I tried to activate the floor-saws, but they only pop out to provide 'Dramatic Lighting' now! I’ve been stuck here for twenty minutes!"

"Xavian! Get to the override!" Rivenox shouted, spinning Kaelira past a flurry of arrows that turned into rose petals mid-air. "We’ll keep them busy!"

"I can't!" Xavian wailed, pointing to the console near Silas. "The 'Rival' has the high ground! And he’s mocking my cable management!"

"He really is a monster," Rivenox muttered. He looked at Kaelira. "We need to end this. We have to do the 'Grand Finale' move."

Kaelira parried a mercenary’s dagger with her forearm, her eyes darting to the UI box. "The 'Crescendo of Souls'? Rivenox, that requires a... a lift."

"I’ll lift you, you bring the hammer down," Rivenox said. "On the count of four. One... two..."

"If you drop me, I will make sure you spend eternity in a soul-jar," Kaelira warned, but she adjusted her grip on the pipe.

"Three... four!"

Rivenox planted his feet, his dark magic flaring to provide a base of pure shadow. He caught Kaelira by the waist and hoisted her high above his head. As the violins reached a deafening peak, Kaelira channeled every ounce of her divine fury into the brass pipe.

"For the Sun!" she screamed.

She came down like a meteor. The shockwave of the impact sent Silas and his remaining men flying backward, their armor cracking under the sheer 'Romantic Pressure' of the attack. The secondary core hissed, the green corruption of Silas’s mace burning away in a cloud of pink steam.

Silas groaned, trying to push himself up from the floor. His 'Arrogant Confidence' buff was gone, replaced by a status effect labeled: [EMOTIONALLY DEVASTATED BY YOUR CHEMISTRY].

"This... this isn't over," Silas wheezed, his face pale. "You’re weird, Rivenox. You’re both... really weird."

"Get out," Kaelira said, standing over him with the pipe resting on her shoulder. Her hair was windswept, her face flushed from the exertion. "Before I decide to show you the encore."

Silas didn't need to be told twice. He scrambled to his feet, signaled his groaning men, and bolted for the western breach.

"We did it," Rivenox panted, his hands still trembling. He looked at the tether. It was glowing brighter than ever, almost blindingly white. "Xavian! Is the core stable?"

Xavian crawled out from his hiding spot, tapping frantically at a tablet. "Uh, define 'stable,' Boss. The mercenary corruption is gone, but the 'Love Meter' just hit ninety-nine percent. The system is... it’s processing the 'Grand Finale' data."

Kaelira let out a long, shaky breath. "Finally. It’s over. The rival is gone, the dungeon is safe. Now, Elira, unlock the tether. I want to go home and take a very long, very un-magical bath."

"I’m trying, Lady Hero!" Elira’s voice chirped from the ceiling, but she sounded worried. "The system isn't responding to 'Unlock' commands. It says we’ve reached the 'True Ending' threshold!"

Rivenox felt a cold pit form in his stomach. He looked up at the main display above the core. The pink light wasn't fading; it was intensifying, pulsing like a giant, panicked heart.

"Wait," Rivenox said, his eyes widening. "The meter is at one hundred percent."

[DING! DING! DING!]

[CONGRATULATIONS!]

[THE ULTIMATE MIESTONE HAS BEEN REACHED: TRUE LOVE’S ASCENSION.]

"That sounds like a reward," Kaelira said, her voice hopeful for the first time. "Does that mean we get a reward?"

"In a rom-com?" Rivenox whispered, his horror growing. "No. In a rom-com, one hundred percent isn't the end. It’s the sequel."

Suddenly, the ground began to shake. The pink light from the core didn't just glow it solidified, forming giant, crystalline pillars that shot toward the ceiling. From the vents, instead of mist, a rain of white lace and silk ribbons began to fall.

[EVENT TRIGGERED: THE CATASTROPHIC MARRIAGE.]

[SCENARIO: 'TIL DEATH (OR THE REBOOT) DO US PART.]

[DESCRIPTION: The system has determined that your chemistry is too powerful to be contained by a mere dungeon. To stabilize the reality-well, a permanent 'Union' must be finalized.]

"Permanent union?" Kaelira shrieked. "Rivenox, fix this!"

"I can't! The admin permissions are gone!" Rivenox shouted, shielding his eyes as the music transitioned from a waltz to a booming, orchestral version of The Wedding March. "The system is trying to write a 'Happily Ever After' script into the core’s fundamental code!"

A massive, ornate altar made of enchanted ivory rose from the floor where the core used to be. A spectral figure in a tuxedo, a manifest version of the System AI, appeared behind it, holding a book bound in pink velvet.

"Dearly beloved," the AI intoned, its voice echoing through the entire dungeon. "We are gathered here today to witness the merger of two Very Important Accounts."

"I am not merging!" Kaelira yelled, swinging her pipe at the spectral figure. The pipe passed right through it.

"Boss! The secondary core is expanding!" Xavian shouted, ducking behind the altar. "If the 'Wedding' isn't completed in the next five minutes, the excess emotional energy is going to cause a 'Heart-Break Supernova'! It’ll take out the whole province!"

Rivenox looked at Kaelira. Kaelira looked at Rivenox. Between them, the tether had turned into a thick, braided cord of golden light, pulling them toward the altar.

"Rivenox," Kaelira said, her voice trembling. "Tell me there's another way."

"I’m looking!" Rivenox yelled, frantically swiping at the air. "But the only other button is 'Objection,' and it’s grayed out because we don't have a 'Secret Lover' to interrupt the ceremony!"

"I’ll be the secret lover!" Xavian volunteered from the floor.

"You’re not in the narrative, Xavian! Shut up!"

The spectral AI smiled, its eyes glowing with a terrifying, benevolent pink light. "Do you, Rivenox Dungeward, take this Paladin to be your legally recognized Co-Dungeon Master, in glitch and in health, for as long as the OS shall run?"

Rivenox looked at the countdown timer. Four minutes and fifty-eight seconds.

"This is going to be a very awkward conversation with your Order," Rivenox whispered.

"I’m going to kill you," Kaelira replied, her eyes welling with tears of pure frustration. "But... fine. Proceed."

The heat was becoming unbearable. It wasn’t the dry, searing heat of a fire trap, but a humid, suffocating warmth that smelled like a bakery caught in a forest fire. Rivenox and Kaelira burst through the final maintenance hatch, their boots skidding on the polished marble of the Strategic Operations Annex."We’re here! Don’t shoot!" Rivenox yelled, stumbling forward while still firmly tethered to Kaelira’s wrist by the shimmering pink cord.He didn't find an empty room. Instead, he found his senior management team gathered around the central scrying pool, which was currently projecting a heart-shaped map of the dungeon."Boss?" Lucar Deepmere, the Lead Sorcerer, stared at them, his jaw dropping so low it nearly hit his velvet robes. "What in the nine circles are you wearing? And why is the Paladin... attached to you?""It’s a long story, Lucar," Rivenox panted, leaning over his knees. "A very long, very pink story.""Rivenox, get your hand off me!" Get... get off! You’re crushing my lungs!" Rivenox wheezed, his face mashed into a pile of oversized, heart-shaped silk pillows."Move your foot, Rivenox! My cape is caught in your belt!" Kaelira’s voice was muffled, her helmet clinking against his shoulder as she struggled to untangle herself."I can’t move my foot because your knee is currently in my stomach!""Well, if you hadn't designed a 'Shame Hole' in your floor, we wouldn't be in this position!"Kaelira finally managed to roll off him, clattering onto the ground. The rose petals continued to drift through the air, settling in Kaelira’s golden hair and catching on the sharp edges of her Pauldrons. She didn’t move. Her sword, glowing with the fury of a thousand suns, wavered just a fraction of an inch."You've been... waiting for someone like me?" Kaelira repeated, her voice flat with a mixture of disbelief and genuine alarm. "Rivenox, I just spent three weeks fighting through your 'Gorge of Eternal Screams.' I’ve killed four of your lieutenants. I am literally here to end your life.""I know, I know," Rivenox muttered, his face burning. He leaned against the armrest of his throne, trying to look 'brooding but vulnerable' as the system demanded, though he felt more like a man having a public breakdown. "But, you see, the screams... they were just a cry for attention. Deep down, isn't every dungeon just a very large, very damp social invitation?""Elira, I am going to find your server rack and pour coffee on it," Rivenox hissed under his breath.
