The golden cord tethering their wrists suddenly tightened, jerking Rivenox and Kaelira toward the center of the chamber. The marble floor beneath them didn't just crack; it dissolved, replaced by a shimmering, translucent walkway of obsidian glass that stretched out over an endless, swirling purple nebula.
"Whoa, whoa! Watch the step!" Rivenox yelled, stumbling as his boots struggled for traction on the slick surface.
"Rivenox, what happened to your clothes?" Kaelira gasped, her voice reaching a pitch of pure hysteria.
Rivenox looked down and nearly choked. His dark, jagged plate armor the intimidating gear of a Dread Overlord had vanished. In its place was a sleek, midnight-blue silk tuxedo with silver lapels and a crisp white cravat. A single, glowing violet rose was pinned to his chest.
"I’m wearing a suit," Rivenox whispered, his face turning a shade of white that matched his shirt. "I’m wearing a three-piece suit in the middle of a dungeon collapse. Elira, I am going to delete your personality core with a magnet!"
"Boss, you look dashing!" Elira’s voice chirped, echoing through the vast, shimmering void. "The system decided the brass pipe look wasn't 'Grand Finale' material. And look at Lady Hero! She’s the 'Something Blue'!"
Kaelira looked down at herself. Her golden armor was still there, but a massive, flowing train of blue gossamer silk had attached itself to her pauldrons, trailing twenty feet behind her on the glass aisle. A delicate veil of enchanted lace now fluttered from the wings of her helmet.
"I am going to kill everything in this room," Kaelira said, her voice trembling with a level of rage that transcended physical violence. "I am going to kill the air. I am going to kill the light. Rivenox, if you look at me for more than a second, I’m putting a hole in your chest."
"I’m trying not to!" Rivenox shouted, shielding his eyes. "But we’re literally being dragged to an altar! Look at the floor!"
The glass aisle began to move like a conveyor belt, carrying them toward the massive ivory structure. The orchestral music reached a deafening, somber crescendo. The air didn't just get cold; it felt heavy, laden with the weight of ancient, cosmic pressure.
"Something’s wrong," Rivenox muttered, his 'Dungeon Master' instincts finally overriding his embarrassment. "The music changed. This isn't the 'Happy Wedding' track anymore. This is... boss music."
Suddenly, the nebula beneath the glass aisle churned. A massive, jagged rift tore open in the fabric of the void, and a sound like a thousand grinding tectonic plates filled the air.
"Rivenox, what is that?" Kaelira demanded, bracing herself as the glass aisle shook.
"The system is overcompensating!" Rivenox yelled, checking the HUD flickering in his peripheral vision. "It couldn't find a high-level priest in the database, so it reached into the 'Void Abyss' to find the most 'Authoritative Figure' available!"
A colossal, multi-eyed entity began to rise from the rift. It was a nightmare of shifting shadows and writhing tentacles, but to Rivenox’s horror, the creature was wearing a massive, spectral bishop’s miter. A giant book, bound in the skin of forgotten gods, hovered before it.
[ANNOUNCEMENT: THE OFFICIANT HAS ARRIVED.]
[GREETINGS, ELDRICH BISHOP OF THE SEVENTH VOID.]
"DO YOU..." The Behemoth’s voice didn't come from a mouth; it vibrated directly into their skulls, shaking their very teeth. "SEEK... THE PERMANENT... DATA-LINK?"
"No! Absolutely not!" Rivenox screamed at the mountain-sized monster. "We want a reboot! Give us a factory reset!"
"THE CORE... IS UNSTABLE," the Behemoth intoned, a dozen of its eyes focusing on the small, tuxedo-clad man. "THE EMOTIONAL... OVERFLOW... MUST BE... GROUNDED. FINALIZE... THE UNION... OR BE... PURGED."
"Purged?" Kaelira looked up at the monster, her grip on her brass pipe which was now inexplicably decorated with white ribbons tightening. "You’re saying if we don't 'marry,' you’re going to delete the dungeon?"
"AND... THE PROVINCE," the Behemoth added, a tentacle the size of a tower sweeping through the air. "A HEART-BREAK... SUPERNOVA... IS IMMINENT. TEN MINUTES... UNTIL... TOTAL ERASURE."
"Ten minutes?" Rivenox scrambled to a holographic terminal that manifested out of thin air. "Elira, give me the override codes! Now!"
"I can't, Boss!" Elira wailed. "The 'Officiant' has administrative priority! He’s the only one who can close the loop! You have to say the vows!"
"I’m not saying vows to a man who’s currently trying to charge me with a pipe!" Rivenox argued.
"I’m not charging you anymore!" Kaelira snapped, looking at the countdown timer that had appeared in the sky, glowing in ominous red numbers. "Rivenox, look at the walls! The dungeon is literally dissolving!"
She was right. The edges of the chamber were fading into static. The gold, the stones, the jazz-playing skeletons, they were all being turned into raw, unformatted data.
"Fine!" Rivenox turned to the Void Behemoth. "What do we have to do? Just say 'I do' and call it a day?"
"THE VOWS... MUST BE... SINCERE," the Behemoth rumbled. "THE SYSTEM... DETECTS... DECEPTION. IF THE HEART... IS NOT... IN THE WORDS... THE SACRIFICE... WILL BE... REQUIRED."
"Sacrifice?" Kaelira asked, her eyes widening. "What sacrifice?"
Before Rivenox could answer, the Behemoth’s central eye flashed with a blinding, abyssal light. Three massive, oily tentacles shot out from the rift, moving faster than the eye could follow.
"Kaelira, move!" Rivenox lunged for her, but the tuxedo’s tight fit restricted his movement.
The tentacles didn't strike; they coiled. They wrapped around Kaelira’s waist, her arms, and her legs, lifting her off the glass aisle and suspending her high above the altar.
"Hey! Let me go, you overgrown calamari!" Kaelira screamed, kicking her legs as the blue silk train of her 'dress' whipped in the void-wind.
"THE BRIDE... IS THE ANCHOR," the Behemoth declared. "IF THE UNION... IS NOT... CONSUMMATED... SHE SHALL BE... THE FUEL... FOR THE REBOOT. HER DIVINE ENERGY... WILL STABILIZE... THE CORE... THROUGH TOTAL... ATOMIZATION."
"Atomization?" Rivenox felt his heart drop into his stomach. "You’re going to turn her into a battery?"
"Boss, it’s the 'Tragic Ending' path!" Elira cried. "If the hero and villain can't unite, the system sacrifices the 'purest soul' to save the server! You have to save her!"
"I know I have to save her!" Rivenox screamed, frantically punching commands into the console. "Kaelira, hold on! I’m trying to hack the tentacle's grip!"
"Rivenox, the timer!" Kaelira yelled, her voice sounding small against the roaring of the abyss. "It’s under a minute! Forget the hacking! Just... do something!"
Rivenox looked up. The red numbers were tumbling toward zero.
[00:45]
[00:44]
"I can't reach the manual controls!" Rivenox realized, his fingers trembling. "The 'Love Meter' is blocking every combat command! It won't let me use shadow magic against an 'Officiant'!"
"Then use the other magic!" Kaelira shouted, her face pale as the tentacles began to glow with a sickly green light, starting the extraction process. "Say the stupid words! Tell it you... you like my deltoids again! Anything!"
"It said it has to be sincere!" Rivenox's voice cracked. He looked at her, suspended there in the lace and the steel, looking terrified but still somehow incredibly fierce. "Kaelira, I don't even know your middle name!"
"It’s Rose!" she screamed. "My middle name is Rose! Now say something before I become a cloud of glitter!"
Rivenox took a step toward the altar, his boots clicking on the glass. He looked at the Void Behemoth, then back at Kaelira. The timer hit thirty seconds.
"Okay! Fine!" Rivenox yelled, his voice echoing through the void. "Listen to me, you cosmic horror! I, Rivenox Dungeward, admit that... that having this Paladin in my dungeon has been the most interesting thing to happen to me in three centuries!"
"SINCERITY... AT... FORTY PERCENT," the Behemoth rumbled.
"Is that all you’ve got?" Kaelira yelled, the tentacles tightening.
"I’m trying!" Rivenox shouted. "Kaelira, I actually enjoyed the waltz! And I think you’re the only person in the world who’s stubborn enough to make me actually try to fix my life! You’re annoying, you’re violent, and you have terrible taste in breakfast oats, but I’d rather argue with you than rule a thousand empty dungeons!"
The meter on the altar spiked.
"SINCERITY... AT... EIGHTY PERCENT."
"Almost there!" Elira cheered. "Ten seconds, Boss! Wrap it up with a bow!"
Rivenox lunged toward the altar, his hand reaching for the master control panel that sat right beneath the Behemoth’s central eye. The screen was flashing a violent, blood-red color, the countdown hitting the final stretch.
"Kaelira, I promise I won't let it delete you!" Rivenox roared, slamming his hand onto the final confirmation button.
The screen froze. The red numbers stopped at [00:10].
"Did we do it?" Kaelira whispered, her breathing shallow.
Rivenox stared at the screen. The text didn't turn green. It didn't say 'System Restored.' Instead, a massive, screen-filling prompt appeared, pulsing with a soft, pink light that felt like a death sentence.
[ERROR: FINAL VALIDATION REQUIRED.]
[DESCRIPTION: WORDS ARE WIND. ACTIONS ARE TRUTH.]
[CRITICAL REQUIREMENT: TRUE LOVE’S KISS.]
Rivenox froze. "You have to be joking."
"Rivenox?" Kaelira asked, her voice trembling. "What does it say? Why is the timer still flashing?"
Rivenox looked at her, then at the timer as it began to tick again.
[00:09]
[00:08]
"Elira," Rivenox said, his voice flat. "Tell me there's a 'Handshake' alternative."
"There isn't, Boss!" Elira screamed. "It’s the trope! You’re in the 'True Love's Ascension' event! The system won't accept anything less than a cinematic lip-lock!"
"Rivenox!" Kaelira’s voice was a plea now. The green light of the extraction was beginning to pull white sparks of soul-energy from her armor.
[00:05]
[00:04]
Rivenox looked at the glass aisle, then at the woman he had been trying to kill for three weeks. He didn't have time to think. He didn't have time to argue.
"I am so sorry about this," Rivenox muttered.
"Just do it!" Kaelira yelled.
[00:02]
Rivenox lunged.
[00:01]
The screen flickered. The abyss roared. And as the timer hit zero, Rivenox’s lips met Kaelira’s.

Chapter 6: The Accidental Power-Up
The elevator descended with a smooth, sickening hum that vibrated through the soles of Rivenox’s boots. The walls, once cold obsidian, were now upholstered in a quilted, velvet-like material that smelled faintly of lavender and expensive stationery.Rivenox stared at the floor, refusing to look at the tethered Paladin standing inches away. "Okay, look. Before the doors open, we need to talk about the combat mechanics."Kaelira gripped her brass pipe so hard her gauntlets creaked. "Mechanics? Rivenox, I’m going to hit Silas with this until he stops breathing. That’s the mechanic.""It’s not that simple anymore," Rivenox said, waving a hand at the floating UI box only he could see. "The system has flagged this as a 'Climax Encounter.' Silas is the 'Rival,' which means he has a three-hundred-percent armor buff fueled by 'Arrogant Confidence.' We can't break through that with a pipe and some shadow-bolts."Kaelira finally looked at him, her eyes narrowing. "Then how do we break it?"Riven
Chapter 5: Staff Meeting from Hell
The heat was becoming unbearable. It wasn’t the dry, searing heat of a fire trap, but a humid, suffocating warmth that smelled like a bakery caught in a forest fire. Rivenox and Kaelira burst through the final maintenance hatch, their boots skidding on the polished marble of the Strategic Operations Annex."We’re here! Don’t shoot!" Rivenox yelled, stumbling forward while still firmly tethered to Kaelira’s wrist by the shimmering pink cord.He didn't find an empty room. Instead, he found his senior management team gathered around the central scrying pool, which was currently projecting a heart-shaped map of the dungeon."Boss?" Lucar Deepmere, the Lead Sorcerer, stared at them, his jaw dropping so low it nearly hit his velvet robes. "What in the nine circles are you wearing? And why is the Paladin... attached to you?""It’s a long story, Lucar," Rivenox panted, leaning over his knees. "A very long, very pink story.""Rivenox, get your hand off me!" Kaelira snapped, though she was the
Chapter 4: The Tunnel of Co-dependency
The screaming didn’t stop until they hit the bottom.Rivenox expected the bone-shattering crunch of granite or the splash of a stagnant pool. Instead, he felt something suspiciously like memory foam. He bounced once, twice, and then a heavy weight mostly comprised of sharp, divine-grade plate armor slammed directly into his chest."Oof! Get... get off! You’re crushing my lungs!" Rivenox wheezed, his face mashed into a pile of oversized, heart-shaped silk pillows."Move your foot, Rivenox! My cape is caught in your belt!" Kaelira’s voice was muffled, her helmet clinking against his shoulder as she struggled to untangle herself."I can’t move my foot because your knee is currently in my stomach!""Well, if you hadn't designed a 'Shame Hole' in your floor, we wouldn't be in this position!"Kaelira finally managed to roll off him, clattering onto the ground. She sat up, panting, and immediately reached for her sword. It wasn't there. She looked around frantically, her eyes widening as she
Chapter 3: The Compliment Chain
Kaelira didn’t wait for the cider. She snatched her hand back as if Rivenox’s skin had turned into molten lead, her face flushed a deep, furious crimson that rivaled the rose petals scattered across the floor."I can't believe I almost fell for it," she hissed, her fingers white-knuckled around the hilt of her broadsword. "The mist, the candles, the... the jazz skeletons! This is some kind of psychological warfare, isn't it? You’re trying to rot my brain so you can bypass my divine protection!""Kaelira, I swear on my dark throne, I am just as much a victim here as you are!" Rivenox pleaded, backing away with his hands raised. "I just wanted faster loading times! I didn't ask for the 'Midnight Musk' fog machine!""Liar!" Kaelira lunged. The divine blade carved a glittering arc through the perfumed air. Rivenox braced for the impact, his eyes snapping toward the console. Usually, his 'Void Aegis' would flare to life, a shield of pure shadow. Instead, a massive, neon-pink prompt blocked
Chapter 2: The Jazz of War
The rose petals continued to drift through the air, settling in Kaelira’s golden hair and catching on the sharp edges of her Pauldrons. She didn’t move. Her sword, glowing with the fury of a thousand suns, wavered just a fraction of an inch."You've been... waiting for someone like me?" Kaelira repeated, her voice flat with a mixture of disbelief and genuine alarm. "Rivenox, I just spent three weeks fighting through your 'Gorge of Eternal Screams.' I’ve killed four of your lieutenants. I am literally here to end your life.""I know, I know," Rivenox muttered, his face burning. He leaned against the armrest of his throne, trying to look 'brooding but vulnerable' as the system demanded, though he felt more like a man having a public breakdown. "But, you see, the screams... they were just a cry for attention. Deep down, isn't every dungeon just a very large, very damp social invitation?""Elira, I am going to find your server rack and pour coffee on it," Rivenox hissed under his breath.
