Ariel's little bet

Vincent could not take his eyes away from the curvy lady who stood before him as he surveyed every single outline of her body.

“If Rachael is beautiful. Then she is god damn a goddess.“ He didn't dare to voice out the thoughts in his head.

“But how come such a rare Gem got hooked up with a disgusting low life like John?“ He thought again.

Meanwhile, Rachael Continued to stare at them, lost in her gaze and unable to spit out a single word from her mouth.

“I can now see the reason that you were so swift in requesting a divorce. Because of him.“ John scoffed as memories of the past sped off his kind and his words snapped Rachael off of her thoughts.

“At least, I have finally gotten someone that I can lean on. Not someone that is only going to drag my reputation down the mud.“

Her eyes sped off towards Ariel and she returned her gaze to John with a frown hanging on her face.

“I can see that you are doing a really good job trying to survive.“ She scoffed almost immediately.

“Working as a bodyguard for such a lady.“ Rachael spat and Vincent came swiftly to the spotlight.

“And I can assure you that you are not safe. I wonder what criteria was used to judge.“ He giggled trying as hard as he could to impress the young lady that was standing before him.

“He is malnourished and can hardly take care of himself. I doubt that he would have much protection from you.“ He added.

“And where are you driving?“ Ariel's eyes farrowed waiting for him to spill out all the nonsense that he had in his head.

“I can help if you don't mind. I am Johnson, the son of Smithtown and the youngest and most successful CEO in the city. I can always get your flirts of guards to protect you so you won't be endangered by this fool lingering around.“ He offered with a smile hanging on his face.

Seeing the fake brightened expression on the face of Ariel, the smile on his face broadened even more as he extended his hands towards her.

“A sign of our deal.“ He smiled but instead of taking his hands, Ariel stared at his filthy hands that were not worthy to clean off the dust from her shoe.

She twisted her face with so much disgust at the lies that he was using to sway Rachael off her feet.

Her brother held that position that he claimed and from the last time he checked, his father wasn't even influential, just a puppet dog for a big company.

“Looking for someone else you can deceive?“

“And what makes you both think that he is my bodyguard?“ He inquired staring right into their eyes as though she was demanding an explanation.

Her eyes with an intimidating aura that made them shudder right on the spot where they were standing.

“Because that's the highest position that he can ever amount to.“ Vincent interrupted replacing his hands to their initial position as his face was washed up with so much shame.

“Sorry to disappoint you but he is not my bodyguard." Ariel made her way swiftly towards John, slipping her hands into his as he shot a stare at her.

“What are you doing?“ She could read the expression in his eyes even with no one telling him anything about it.

Rachael shrunk to the point that she was standing, unable to phantom the thoughts in her head but she braised herself immediately.

“We just got divorced and it hasn't formally been consolidated and too already seeing someone? How shameful of you?“ Rachael spat.

“Look who is talking about shame. You have cheated on me and you dare to talk about shame?“ John responded..

“At least I have got a real man and not a prostitute.“ She shot the words at Ariel but she was not worried.

“Says someone who sells their body to make wealth. You must be a legendary harlot aren't you?“ Ariel spat and Rachael shrunk, smitten by facts.

“I can't watch him see me so crushed. Rachael thought to herself.

“But what did you see in such a swindler? Is he blackmailing me for something?“ John was still finding it difficult to make things out in his head.

“At least he got good looks. Something that you can never relate to.“ Ariel replied, smashing his ego to the lowest point.

“What's the use of a handsome face when it can only land you on the street?“ Vincent replied.

"I'm here to see the heiress of the Armstrong family business group. And with my connection, getting to her won't even take a blink!

What good do you think someone like him could do for you? Maybe if you ditch your ass,  I might just have more help to spare!" Vincent soon added.

“I'm sure John will be able to achieve more than you can ever think of.“ Ariel replied, staring right into his eyes but his face broke into a swift smile.

“Do you think so? Does the punk that you are defending think so?“ He replied with a deadly snare on his face.

“I don't think so. I know so. The only thing that you have ever done all your life is rely on your father's wealth. I doubt if you have ever achieved anything on your own.“ John replied.

If there was anything that was enough to stare Vincent's full-blown anger, it was ascribing all his achievements to his father.

His face turned red hot with anger and his hands were clenched so hard until they pooped.

“You fool.“ He growled, unable to control his rising anger.

“Why are you so angry? Do you think it's because everything that I just said is a glaring fact?“ He inquired.

Then a random thought crossed through his mind that calms his nerves but only a little bit.

“If you feel that you are so good. Why don't we have a bet?“

“A bet?“  Everyone responded almost at the same time.

“Yeah. The person with the most achievements for the next three months wins the bets but in any case, losing comes with a price.“

“There is no way that he is going to accept that.“ Sophia said under her breath.

“So what do you say? Or are you so scared?“ Vincent inquired, staring right into his eyes while John frowned.

John could see the hesitation in the eyes of Ariel as she advanced swiftly toward them, wanting to stop the agreement as soon as he could.

He smiled crawled onto his lips as he went forward to stop her from doing what she was about to do

Join hands sped off towards her, catching her by her wrist before she could get to spit out a single word from her mouth.

She stared right into his eyes and he stared back at hers.

“Don't” Ariel could read the signs that were written in those eyes of his and she relaxed a little beat, her heart beat still racing fast.

“And what's your attachment?“ Join inquired without a single trace of fear in his eyes.

The proceeding words from his mouth made Andrea let out a sudden scoff clothed with so much hate and disgust.

“Wanting to act though when all of us already know that you will never be able to make it to par.“. There was every sense of disgust in her voice but she was gladly ignored as Join continued to pair at Johnson, waiting for a response.

“Whoever wins gets to ask for anything for the other party.“ Vincent finally found the perfect response to give to him.

“Then we have a deal.“ John replied effortlessly without even a single flinch in his expression.

At first, there was a sudden breeze of chilling silence around them.

The expression of everyone in the place changed almost immediately as their eyes widened with so much shock.

“What do you think he is trying to do?“ The eyes of Ariel were flooded with so much shock and confusion.

“So much for trying to impress a girl.“ Rachael twisted her face with so much disgust as she spat on the floor.

“Guess who just fell into my trap.“ Vincent's lips broke into a sudden dark smile as the thoughts continued to flow in his head, causing his smile to broaden even more.

“In three months, we will already know the winner.“ the dark smile on Johnson's lips widened even more.

“I don't think that you should be too lost in your delusion.“ John replied, turning around swiftly towards Ariel.

“And where is he heading to.. Running away?” Benjamin's voice came like a piercing stab from behind.

“We already have a done deal. I think that there is any need to waste more of my time here when there is a lot to je done.” He responded without turning around.

“We should leave you now to enjoy the party.“ He replied turning around towards Ariel who nodded her head without spitting out a single word from her mouth, still trying to recover from the shock of what she was made to go through.

“We should get going.“ He noted and she nodded her head  once walking right behind him.

For the first time, he noticed that his movements were not that of a topical poor man.

Swaying his thighs with  much grace and so effortlessly.

“How come his ex never even noticed this even when they were married for three years?“ She thought as they continued to walk.

Staring at her wristwatch, Ariel noticed that it would soon be time for the list of qualified candidates to be released.

“Make yourself comfortable. Will be back in a moment.“ Ariel said as she pushed through a forced smile.

She could tell that there was something different and hidden   about him but just couldn't point at what exactly it was.

“Who exactly are you, John?“ She muttered under her breath.

JOHN'S POVThe announcement spreads through the Academy before anyone officially confirms it. That's how things work here. Rumors travel faster than notices, and by the time anything is posted officially, everyone already knows.I see it in the way instructors glance at me during training, then at Divo, then back again like they're mentally measuring the distance between us. Assistants linger near our stations longer than necessary. Conversations die when either of us enters a room, then restart in quieter, more careful tones. The tension becomes something physical, settling into my shoulders like weight I can't put down."You feel it too, right?" Thomas says during a break in training, leaning against the wall beside me. "The whole place feels like it's holding its breath.""I feel it," I confirm."How are you doing with it?" he asks."Trying not to run out of breath?" I say.He gives me a look that says he doesn't believe me. I don't push back on it because honestly, he's right not

Chapter 82JOHN'S POVThe Academy hums with quiet anticipation the next morning. I notice it the moment I step into the dining hall. Conversations pause when I approach, heads turning briefly before looking away. Then the talking resumes in softer tones, more careful than before.I grab food and sit with my team. Lawrence looks up as I settle into my seat."Morning," he says. "Slept at all?""Well enough," I lie.Maya studies my face with that direct way she has. "You look tired.""I'm fine," I say, taking a bite of bread I don't particularly want.Thomas leans in slightly. "It's not just you noticing things today. Something feels off this morning. Like everyone's waiting for something."He's right. The shift in atmosphere is subtle but very noticeable throughout breakfast. People step aside for me without meeting my eyes, creating a path that feels less like respect and more like distance. Like they're already positioning themselves away from whatever is coming."Did something happen

JOHN'S POVThe tea house sits quiet when I arrive, tucked into the eastern corner of the meditation garden just as Elder Ming described. It's a small structure, traditional in design, with paper screens and a low table inside. Steam rises faintly from a kettle already set out, two cups placed precisely across from each other.Elder Ming is already there, kneeling on a cushion with perfect posture. He looks up as I enter and gestures to the cushion opposite him."John. Thank you for coming.""Thank you for the invitation," I say, removing my shoes at the entrance before stepping inside.I settle onto the cushion, feeling awkward in the formal position. Elder Ming seems completely at ease, like he was born to sit this way.He pours tea for both of us with deliberate care. The tea flows from the pot in a smooth line, filling each cup to exactly the same level. He watches my hands as I accept the cup, observing how I hold it, whether I understand the proper etiquette.I hold it with both

Chapter 80JOHN'S POVTraining is interrupted when an instructor redirects me to a different station than the one I am assigned. I'm halfway to my designated workspace when he calls out."John, not that one. Over here."I stop and turn. He's pointing to a station in the far corner, away from where the rest of my team is setting up."I was assigned to station three," I say, checking the board where assignments are posted."Change of plans," the instructor says. His tone is casual but his eyes are firm. "Station seven needs someone. You'll work there today."I glance at station seven. The tools there are modern, unfamiliar in their design. Digital monitors, electronic diagnostic equipment, instruments that require power sources and calibration. None of the traditional tools I normally rely on are present. When I hesitate, the instructor gestures for me to move. "Is there a problem?""No," I say, because what else can I say?I walk to station seven and examine the setup more closely. Eve

JOHN'S POVThe failure of another participant spreads through the Academy before noon. I don't see it happen, but I witness the aftermath in the corridor when the person is escorted past us by two officials. The participant is a young man I recognize from the obstacle course. He'd struggled through it but finished. Now his eyes are fixed on the floor, his shoulders hunched inward like he's trying to disappear. His team stands frozen in place against the wall, watching him pass.No one steps forward. No one speaks. No one offers comfort or solidarity. The space around him empties too quickly, participants backing away like failure is contagious. Like getting too close might infect them with whatever inadequacy caused him to wash out.I stay where I am, not backing away but not approaching either. Just watching as he's led down the corridor toward the administrative building. Toward whatever process removes failed participants from the Academy. When he's out of sight, the corridor stays

JOHN'S POVI wake with a tightness in my chest that does not fade, I try shaking it off as I run through the usual morning routine but even as I move through the dorm corridors toward the trial hall, the feeling still stays, like a rock that isn't ready to move. Something about today feels different. Heavier. The air itself seems to press down, or maybe it's just me in my head. Groups gather in low clusters along the pathway, watching each other more than they speak. Conversations stop when I pass. Eyes follow my movement. I keep walking, not acknowledging the attention that my presence is drawing. I hate it. The trial hall is larger than the conference rooms we've used before. High ceilings, stone walls, rows of chairs arranged theater-style facing a central examination area. Observers are already seated - officials, family representatives, other participants waiting their turns. When I step into the room, one of the evaluators signals for me to approach. She's a woman I don't rec
