Chapter 8: The Wall Moves Back
The sapphire light of the Anchor didn’t just illuminate the room; it seemed to reach into Rydan’s chest and pull his ribs apart. Time remained a frozen, jagged thing—a photograph of a disaster. Evania was a statue of worry, her hand outstretched. Rith was a mannequin of terror.
Rydan stared at his own reflection within the crystal. The silhouette inside—the Anchor-Rydan—shifted, its movements fluid while the rest of the world was stuck in amber.
"You look like you’re about to throw up," the voice within the crystal said. It was Rydan’s voice, but without the cracks, without the exhaustion of three thousand deaths. "Don't. It’ll just hang there in the air. Messy."
"Stop talking," Rydan whispered, his breath hitching. "You’re not me. I’m out here. I’m the one bleeding. I’m the one who’s been dying since 2004."
"Technically, you died once," the Anchor-Rydan replied, leaning back in its chair of light. "The rest has just been… creative accounting. You couldn't handle the fact that the world ended, so you built a sandbox. A very loud, very violent sandbox."
"A sandbox? People are dying, you prick! Jorven just turned into a string!"
"Jorven wasn't real, Rydan. He was a sub-routine. A bit of flavor text to make the 'Mercenary' loop feel gritty."
Rydan’s hand stayed pressed against the cold crystal. Suddenly, a jolt of electricity—or perhaps memory—surged through his arm. His vision blurred.
June 14, 2004.
He wasn't in a ruined city. He was in a lab that smelled of sterilized metal and expensive coffee. He was standing in front of a console, his hands flying across a keyboard. Beside him, a woman was watching the monitors. It was Evania. But she wasn't wearing a commander’s jacket. She was wearing a lab coat with a 'Chief of Chronology' badge.
"The meteors are hitting the atmosphere in ten minutes, Rydan," the memory-Evania said. Her voice was calm, but her eyes were red from crying. "The Weaver's Cradle is ready. We can’t save the world, but we can save the moment."
"I’m setting the parameters for the 'Forgetting,'" memory-Rydan said. "If I’m going to be the Anchor, I can’t know it’s a simulation. I’ll go insane within a week if I know the sun isn't real. I need to believe I’m fighting for something."
"You're choosing to be a victim in your own dream?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"I'm choosing to live," memory-Rydan replied. "Even if it’s a lie. Just… stay with me, Evania. Whatever version of me is in there, don't let him be alone."
The memory snapped. Rydan fell back, the frozen time around him shattering like a window.
"Rydan!" Evania screamed, her voice suddenly back to full volume as the world unfroze. She rushed to his side, grabbing his shoulders. "What happened? You touched it and just… went blank."
Rydan looked at her, really looked at her. He saw the way her eyes darted to the Anchor, then back to him. There was a flicker of something there—not just concern, but a deep, ancient guilt.
"You lied to me," Rydan said, his voice flat. "The 'Chief of Chronology' thing. You said you were trying to fix me. But you were the one who helped me build the cage."
Evania’s grip on his shoulders tightened, then slowly relaxed. She didn't look away. "I didn't lie about trying to fix it, Rydan. I’ve been trying to find a way out for twenty years."
"By being a Commander? By being a Doctor?" Rydan stood up, brushing her off. "I just saw it. The 'Forgetting.' You’re not a character in the loop, Evania. You're an upload. You’ve been jumping bodies, haven't you?"
"It’s the only way to stay in sync with the Anchor," she said, her voice losing its tactical edge and becoming something much more weary. "The loop generates new roles every time you expand the city. If I stayed in my original body, I would have aged and died fifteen cycles ago. I have to… migrate. I wait for a high-priority NPC to be generated, and I override the data."
"NPC?" Rith croaked, backing away toward a pulsing gear. "What the hell are you talking about? I’m an NPC? I have a mother! I remember my third birthday!"
"You have a script, Rith," Evania said, not unkindly. "And right now, your script says you're supposed to be terrified. You’re doing a great job."
"You’re a monster," Rydan whispered.
"I’m the only thing that’s kept you from dissolving!" Evania snapped, her eyes flashing. "Every time you have a 'seizure,' every time the world flickers, it’s because your subconscious is trying to tear the simulation apart. I’m the one who stabilizes the frequency. I’m the one who makes sure there’s a 'tomorrow' for you to wake up to, even if it’s the same Tuesday you’ve lived three thousand times!"
"Well, look who finally figured out the plot," a new voice drawled.
From the shadows of the crystalline heart stepped Ordan Kelm. He looked different than the last time Rydan had seen him. His skin was shimmering with the same blue data-smoke that the deletion field emitted. He held a heavy pulse-rifle, but he wasn't aiming it at them. He was aiming it at the Anchor's core.
"Ordan?" Rydan gasped. "How are you here? The gravity—"
"The gravity doesn't bother you when you’re a virus, kid," Ordan said, a jagged grin crossing his face. "I’m the part of the code that didn't want to play along. I’m the corruption in the file. And I’m really, really tired of Oakhaven."
"Ordan, stay back," Evania warned, her hand reaching for her pistol. "If you damage the core, the whole shell collapses. There’s nothing outside! It’s just vacuum and ash!"
"Sounds better than another day of listening to you bark orders, 'Commander,'" Ordan spat. "Rydan, look at her. She’s been playing God while you’ve been the sacrifice. She likes it in here. In here, she’s the hero. Outside? She’s just a scientist who failed to save the world."
"That’s not true!" Evania shouted.
"Isn't it?" Ordan laughed. "Rydan, touch the crystal again. Ask the 'Architect' version of yourself why the city is getting bigger. Ask him why there’s a 'New North District' that looks like a futuristic nightmare."
Rydan looked at the Anchor-Rydan, who was watching the scene with bored detachment.
"Is it because I’m bored?" Rydan asked.
"It’s because you’re expanding the server capacity," the Anchor-Rydan replied from within the sapphire depths. "The more memories you accumulate, the more 'space' you need to store them. You’re not just living in Oakhaven; you’re building a museum of your own trauma. The new streets are just new hard drives, Rydan. But the power is running out."
"The fire," Rydan realized. "The deletion field. It’s not an accident."
"It’s a disk cleanup," Ordan said, stepping closer to the core. "The system is trying to delete the old files to make room for the new ones. It’s eating the 2004 stuff to make room for the 'Modern' stuff. But I have a better idea."
"Ordan, don't," Rydan stepped forward, his hands raised. "We can fix this. We can find a way to… to exit."
"There is no exit, kid! That’s the joke!" Ordan screamed, his voice distorting into a digital screech. "The world is gone! We're just ghosts in a box! I'm ending the simulation. Right now."
Ordan pulled the trigger.
The pulse-round didn't explode. It sank into the crystal like a stone into water. For a heartbeat, everything went silent. Then, the Anchor let out a chime so violent that Rith’s ears began to bleed. The sapphire light turned a blinding, angry red.
"What did you do?" Evania yelled, firing her pistol at Ordan, but the bullets passed through him as if he were smoke.
"I broke the clock!" Ordan laughed, his body beginning to pixelate. "Check your watch, Rydan! It’s finally time!"
Rydan looked at his wrist. The digital watch he’d worn through every loop was flickering.
11:59:58 PM.
11:59:59 PM.
In every other loop, the watch would reset to 6:00 AM. The truck would hit him, the tea would be lukewarm, and the sun would rise.
The numbers shifted.
12:00:00 AM.
The world didn't reset. Instead, a sound like a thousand mirrors shattering echoed from the sky. Rydan looked up, and his heart stopped.
The bruised purple sky was cracking. Massive, jagged fissures were spreading across the firmament, revealing not stars, not a void, but a dark, metallic surface. It was a dome. A literal glass ceiling, miles above the city, and it was falling apart.
12:00:05 AM.
"Rydan, look!" Rith screamed, pointing at the horizon.
The white fire—the deletion field—had reached the base of the Cathedral. But it wasn't deleting things anymore. It was washing over them, revealing the truth beneath the texture. The 'modern' buildings turned into piles of rusted scrap and old server racks. The 'pristine' asphalt turned into scorched, cracked earth.
The city was a graveyard. It had always been a graveyard.
"The shell is gone," Evania whispered, her face bathed in the red light of the dying Anchor. "Rydan, I’m sorry. I tried to keep the dream alive."
"It wasn't a dream," Rydan said, his voice surprisingly steady as he watched the sky fall. "It was a prison."
As the last of the glass dome shattered and fell in titanic shards toward the ruins of Oakhaven, the sun—the fake, golden eye—winked out.
12:01:00 AM.
The clock hit the first minute of a day that hadn't existed for twenty years.
Rydan looked up into the true darkness outside the dome. There were no stars. There was only a vast, cold hangar, lit by dim red emergency lights. And there, looming over the shattered remains of the Oakhaven simulation, were things that made the temporal hounds look like puppies.
Huge, multi-lensed eyes, the size of houses, were peering down through the holes in the sky. They weren't monsters. They were observers.
"Subject 099-21-V has breached the containment," a voice boomed from the rafters of the universe, sounding like rolling thunder. "Initiate the physical extraction. The Architect is awake."
Rydan felt a cold, mechanical tether snap onto his spine. He looked at Evania one last time. She wasn't pixelating. She was crying.
"See you tomorrow?" she whispered.
"No," Rydan said, as his world turned to white. "See you in reality."

Chapter 7: Sector ZeroThe darkness wasn't just an absence of light; it was a heavy, suffocating blanket that felt like it was trying to crawl into Rydan’s lungs. He reached out, his fingers brushing against a cold stone surface that shouldn't have been there."Evania? Rith? Anyone?" Rydan’s voice sounded muffled, as if he were speaking into a thick wad of cotton."Right here, kid. Stop swinging your arms around before you poke an eye out," Evania’s voice drifted from somewhere to his left, though it sounded like she was speaking from the bottom of a well.A harsh, flickering beam of white light cut through the gloom as Rith clicked on a heavy-duty tactical torch. The light didn't behave like it should. Instead of a straight cone, the beam bent at a sharp forty-five-degree angle halfway across the space, illuminating a patch of ceiling that was somehow also a floor."What the hell is wrong with my flashlight?" Rith hissed, shaking the device. "Did I bust the lens when we ran?""The le

Chapter 6: Running Towards the FireThe iron bolt screamed as Evania threw it back, the metal hot enough to hiss against the sweat on her palms. The second the door swung open, the air hit them—a dry, blistering wall of heat that tasted like scorched metal and ozone."Move! Don't look back, just run!" Evania shouted, shoving Rith toward the street.Rith didn't need a second invitation. He scrambled out, shielding his eyes from the bruised purple sky. "Which way, Commander? The whole North District is glowing! It’s coming from every side!"Rydan stumbled out after them, his body flickering so violently he looked like a corrupted video file. He squinted at the horizon. In every direction he knew, the familiar wall of orange-white fire was roaring through the skyline, vaporizing the old tenements and the stone bridges he’d seen fall a thousand times."Follow the new road!" Rydan yelled, pointing toward the jagged line of pristine, yellow-painted asphalt that had erupted through the marke

Chapter 5: The ForgettingThe bruised purple sky felt like it was pressing down on Oakhaven, a heavy, suffocating blanket that turned the air into a thick soup of ozone and dust. Rydan stumbled, his legs feeling like they belonged to someone else—or perhaps several different people at once. One moment his boots struck solid asphalt, and the next, he felt like he was treading on nothingness."Keep your head up, Rydan! Don't you dare phase out on me now!"Evania’s voice was like a whip. She grabbed his collar, her knuckles white, and hauled him toward a heavy iron door tucked into the side of a nondescript brick warehouse. Behind them, the roar of the panicked crowd in the market square was fading, replaced by the low, rhythmic hum of the obsidian tower."Where are Melrik and Cerya?" Rydan gasped, his chest heaving. "They were right behind us.""Kade and Jace have them," Evania said, kicking the door shut and sliding a heavy steel bolt into place. "They’re heading to the secondary extra

Chapter 4: Expansion PainsThe impact didn’t feel like stone or cold morgue tile. It felt like falling through a sheet of thin ice and landing in a pile of sun-warmed burlap. Rydan’s lungs seized, his vision a kaleidoscope of jagged blue light and flickering shadows. When he finally managed to suck in a breath, it didn't taste like the stagnant, mothballed air of a hospital basement. It tasted like ozone, roasted coffee, and panic."Move! Out of the way, you idiot! Move!"A sharp kick to Rydan’s ribs sent him rolling across the pavement. He groaned, clutching his side as he blinked the grit from his eyes. The darkness of the hospital was gone. He was lying in the middle of the Oakhaven Central Market, but the stalls were twisted, the cobblestones groaning like living things."Rydan? Is that you? Why are you glowing?"He looked up. A woman in a dust-stained utility vest was standing over him, a telescopic surveyor’s pole in her hand. Cerya Dune. He remembered her from a loop back in th

Chapter 3: The Ghost of the DoctorThe sun hung motionless above the silver-tipped oaks of the Verdant Reach, a golden eye that refused to blink. Below it, the standoff between Evania’s mercenaries and Kaid’s militia felt like a tableau frozen in amber."Check the digital watches again," Kaid barked, his shotgun trembling slightly. "Someone tell me the satellites are just glitching.""It’s not the satellites, Kaid," Rydan said, his voice sounding thin in the heavy, jasmine-scented air. "The gears are jammed. The whole world is stalling."Evania didn't look at the sky. She was looking at Rydan’s arm. A jagged piece of rebar from the clinic collapse had sliced through his jacket, and a dark stain was spreading down his sleeve."You’re bleeding," she said. Her voice had lost that sharp, command-room edge."I’ve had worse," Rydan shrugged, though his head was beginning to swim.
