Zafriel’s bright blue eyes locked onto Adrian, filled with a strange, intense scrutiny that felt as if it were peeling back the layers of Adrian’s monstrous exterior, searching for the soul hidden deep within.

"You know, for a terrifying demon lord, you're surprisingly merciful," Zafriel said, his tone light and conversational, completely at odds with the ruined, blood-spattered throne room around them. He brushed a stray piece of plaster off his golden shoulder guard. "Why didn't you just let those rocks squash me? It would've saved you a lot of trouble."

Adrian braced his hand against the side of the damaged Seat of Ruin, forcing his breathing to slow down. He felt utterly hollowed out, but he kept his face a mask of absolute, bored indifference. "If you die in my court, your little friends at the border will use it as an excuse to launch an all-out war. I’m not in the mood to deal with a siege when my own house is in disorder."

"Fair enough," Zafriel shrugged, though his sharp eyes didn't lose their calculating gleam. He took a few steps closer, his boots crunching softly on the shattered basalt. "But we still have a problem. Those guys who tried to drop a pillar on us? They weren't just angry palace guards. That was void corruption. I felt it."

Adrian's brow furrowed. Void corruption. In the actual timeline of Chronicles of the Dark Court, the void leaks weren't supposed to start happening for another three chapters. If the boundary lines of the world were already failing, the entire world state was ahead of schedule.

"There's an unstable zone near the ruined outskirts," Adrian said, stepping down from the dais. The sheer physical presence of his massive frame made Zafriel's eyes track him closely. "We're going to check it out."

"We?" Zafriel raised an eyebrow, a slight, amused smile tugging at his lips. "You and me? Are we buddies now?"

"If the rifts spread, both our territories get swallowed," Adrian grunted, walking past him toward the heavy doors. As he brushed past, the sheer magnetic pull of the light champion's presence hit him like a physical wave, making his demonic pulse spike. "So yes, we. Unless you're too scared to step outside your comfort zone."

"Please," Zafriel snorted, falling into step beside him. "I've been dying to get out of this depressing castle anyway."

The journey out of the Abyssal Spire was silent, save for the wind howling through the cracked obsidian canyons. The ruined outskirts of the demon realm were a wasteland of black sand, jagged rock formations, and pockets of toxic purple fog.

Adrian marched forward, every muscle in his body tense. He was painfully aware of the man walking beside him. Zafriel moved with a dancer's grace, his golden-trimmed armor gleaming even in the dim, ash-choked light. The scent of him—like fresh pine and clean ozone—kept cutting through the sulfur of the wasteland, driving Adrian’s demonic instincts wild.

Deep down, Adrian felt a sickening wave of guilt. He was falling for the very person who was destined to put a sword through his chest in the endgame. The game's coding demanded they be mortal enemies, yet every glance from Zafriel made his blood run hot.

Suddenly, the ground beneath them trembled.

A low, wet snarl echoed from a nearby ravine. Out from the shadows of a crumbling stone archway crawled three massive, distorted beasts. They looked like giant, six-legged wolves, but their flesh was translucent, revealing pulsing, purplish-black veins of pure void energy.

"Void-Touched Husks," Zafriel muttered, his casual demeanor instantly vanishing. He drew his twin shortswords, the blades immediately flaring with a brilliant, blinding white light. "They shouldn't be this close to the border."

"They shouldn't exist yet at all," Adrian growled.

Before he could fully process the threat, one of the beasts lunged, its jaw snapping inches from his face. Adrian reacted on pure instinct. Without enough mana to cast his signature dark spells, he relied on the brutal, kinetic strength of his physical form. He grabbed the beast by its upper and lower jaws, his clawed fingers sinking deep into its corrupted flesh, and tore it apart with a sickening wet crunch.

But two more took its place, their claws slashing across his chest. The attack left shallow, burning rifts on his grey skin.

"Get back!" Zafriel yelled.

The light champion blurred into motion. He spun past Adrian, his glowing blades cutting a glittering arc through the gloom. He decapitated one beast, but the last one caught him off guard, slamming its heavy shoulder into his chest and knocking him to the ground.

The beast reared back, its maw dripping with acidic void fluid, ready to plunge down on Zafriel’s throat.

Adrian didn't think. He threw himself forward, wrapping his massive, muscular arms around the beast's neck from behind, pulling it back. "Do it now!" Adrian roared, holding the thrashing monster pinned against his own chest.

Zafriel, pinned beneath the beast but seeing the opening, didn't hesitate. He thrust his light-infused blade upward, driving it straight through the creature's chest.

Because of their positions, the blade passed through the beast and dissipated, but the sheer force of the strike brought their bodies crashing together. The beast dissolved into ash, leaving them tangled on the black sand.

More snarls echoed from the surrounding cliffs. The noise had attracted a whole pack.

"This way!" Adrian grabbed Zafriel’s wrist, pulling him toward a hidden cleft in the volcanic rock.

They scrambled through the narrow opening, sliding down a steep, damp tunnel until they tumbled out into a hidden cavern. The sound of rushing water filled the space. A subterranean hot spring cascaded down a high basalt wall, creating a thick, steamy curtain of water that pooled into a warm reservoir before disappearing back into the earth.

They collapsed against the wet stone wall behind the roaring waterfall, panting heavily.

The space was incredibly tight, barely large enough for two people. Adrian’s massive frame completely crowded Zafriel against the damp, mossy rock. The heat from the hot spring was suffocating, mixing with the intense adrenaline still pulsing through their veins.

"Well," Zafriel panted, his chest heaving under his fitted armor. He had lost his shoulder guards in the scuffle, leaving his neck and collarbones bare. Sweat and water droplets rolled down his smooth skin, catching the faint, bioluminescent glow of the cave's moss. "That was... intense."

"You're reckless," Adrian rumbled, his voice deep and rough. He was standing so close he could feel the radiating warmth of Zafriel’s light magic. It felt like a hot hearth on a freezing winter night, and his cold, demonic body craved it with a terrifying intensity.

"And you're surprisingly protective," Zafriel countered, tilting his head up. His blue eyes were dark, dilated with adrenaline, reflecting the faint red glow of Adrian's gaze. "Seriously. You keep putting yourself between me and danger. Why?"

Adrian’s gaze dropped to Zafriel’s lips. They were wet, parted, and flushed. The internal struggle tore at him. He is the hero. In the game, he is the one who is supposed to kill you. You cannot do this.

But the demon's instincts didn't care about the game's ending. The dark, possessive hunger flared in Adrian's gut, a heavy, throbbing ache that demanded he claim this beautiful, radiant creature right here, on the wet stone, beneath the steam.

He stepped closer, his heavy chest pressing flush against Zafriel’s. He raised a large, clawed hand, his fingers hovering just millimeters away from Zafriel’s jawline, hesitant to touch but desperately wanting to. "Because you're mine to deal with," Adrian rasped. "No one else gets to touch you."

Zafriel’s breath hitched. Instead of pulling away, his hands came up to rest on Adrian’s broad, bare chest, his fingers curling into the rough, dark skin. The contrast was striking—pale, delicate-looking hands against dark, monstrous muscle. A shiver ran through Zafriel’s body, his eyes locking onto Adrian’s with an intensity that made the air between them feel combustible.

"Then deal with me," Zafriel whispered, his voice dropping to a low, husky register that sent a jolt of pure fire straight to Adrian's core.

For a second, the world outside the waterfall ceased to exist. Adrian leaned in, his lips brushing against the shell of Zafriel’s ear, his breath hot and heavy. The urge to devour him, to lose himself in the pristine light of his enemy, was overwhelming.

But before their lips could meet, Zafriel's fingers tightened in Adrian's dark hair, pulling him slightly closer, his lips brushing against Adrian's neck.

"But you need to know something first," Zafriel whispered, his voice suddenly sharp despite the breathless heat of the moment. "The Alliance didn't send me here for a truce, Adrian. They sent me as a distraction. They're already marching on your southern gate."

Feels like my veins are full of lead.""That's the magic-suppressing iron," Adrian muttered, shifting his grip to slide one massive arm under Zafriel's knees and the other behind his back. Humans, demons, villages... they're going to wipe us all out."The heavy, humid air of the cavern grew instantly freezing. The lingering heat of their interrupted kiss evaporated, replaced by a sharp, suffocating dread.Zafriel dropped to his knees beside the dying scout, his hands flaring with a warm, golden light as he pressed them against Alric’s bleeding side. "Alric, breathe. Hang on. Who authorized this? The Grand Inquisitor?""Daryen Surin..." Alric gasped, his eyes rolling back as the light magic stabilized his shallow breathing. "He brought the decree. We have much larger problems to survive."Zafriel’s hand was still suspended in the empty air, his fingers brushing the exact spot where the golden letters of the system notification had just been hovering. Before Zafriel’s light-attuned senses could register the residual magical hum of the interface, Adrian swiped his massive, clawed hand through the space, scattering the lingering particles of digital gold into nothingness. The glowing text window dissolved instantly, swallowed by the thick, rising steam of the cavern."Seriously, what was that?" Zafriel asked, his brow furrowing as he looked from the empty air back to Adrian. "The air felt... glitched. Like a tapestry with a loose thread.""Just a pocket of unstable atmospheric mana," Adrian lied smoothly, his grave
