"Let her in," Adrian said, his voice steadying. "I’m in the mood for a distraction."
He dragged himself back up the dais, each step feeling as if his veins were filled with liquid lead. The Seat of Ruin welcomed his massive, demonic frame with a cold, unforgiving embrace. He leaned back, resting his chin on a closed, clawed fist, forcing his face into a mask of absolute, bored indifference. Inside, his mind was a chaotic storm. His magical energy was completely bottomed out, leaving him relying solely on the raw, terrifying physical power of his monstrous new body.
The colossal obsidian doors of the throne room groaned, slowly parting to admit the light of the outside world—or at least, the dreary, ash-filtered daylight of the Abyssal border.
Kaelan Rith took up his position at the side of the throne, his hand resting casually on the pommel of his sword. "Wait," the guard muttered, his brow furrowing as he squinted down the long, basalt-paved hall. "That's definitely not the princess."
Instead of the heavily armored female commander the scout reports had promised, a single figure strode through the threshold. He walked with a lazy, supreme confidence that bordered on insulting, completely ignoring the lines of dark-plated guards flanking his path.
He was breathtaking. White hair, spun like fine silver, fell in loose, careless waves around a face of sharp, aristocratic angles. His eyes were a piercing, luminous blue, radiating an innate light magic that practically hummed against the oppressive gloom of the Spire. He wore fitted white-and-gold armor that clung to a lean, muscular build, highlighting the broad expanse of his chest and the narrow taper of his waist.
"Yeah, sorry to disappoint," the newcomer said, his voice a cool, amused drawl that echoed effortlessly through the high-ceilinged room. "The lady general had some paperwork to do. You're stuck with me."
Adrian’s breath caught, but not because of the man’s looks.
Deep within his chest, something violent and ancient roared to life. A dark, suffocating wave of pure, unadulterated hatred flooded Adrian’s nervous system. It was the Final Boss code—the instinctual, hard-wired programming of the Demon Monarch. The game body recognized the invader. This was Zafriel Anurak, the champion of the Light Alliance. Every fiber of Adrian's demonic being screamed at him to tear the man’s throat out, to paint the obsidian floor with his radiant blood.
The physical reaction was overwhelming. Heat pooled low in Adrian's gut, a heavy, throbbing ache that blurred the line between lethal bloodlust and raw, dominant desire. He wanted to destroy him. He wanted to conquer him. The sheer intensity of the contrast—the dark, suffocating heat of the demon body reacting to the cool, pristine purity of the light champion—created a suffocating cloud of sexual tension in the air.
Adrian gripped the armrests of his throne so hard the stone began to spiderweb with cracks. Control it, he told himself, his jaw aching from how hard he was clenching his teeth. You are Adrian. You are not a monster. Don't let the game play you.
"Zafriel Anurak," Adrian said, his gravelly voice vibrating through the floorboards. "You've got a lot of nerve walking in here alone."
"Well, I figured a face-to-face would be quicker," Zafriel said, stopping at the base of the dais. He tilted his head back, his brilliant blue eyes locking onto Adrian's glowing, red ones. A smirk played at the corner of his lips, though his body was coiled like a spring, ready to move at a millisecond's notice. "You look like you're about to eat me alive, Your Majesty. Is that how you treat all your guests?"
"Only the ones who don't know when to shut up," Adrian replied, leaning forward. The motion brought him closer, and the scent of Zafriel—sun-drenched cedar, ozone, and clean, warm skin—drifted up to the throne. It was intoxicating, making Adrian’s demonic pulse spike. "Why are you here, Zafriel? What does the Light Alliance want?"
"Honestly? We want you to back off the eastern border," Zafriel said, crossing his arms. The tight leather of his under-armor flexed over his biceps. "We’re tired of the skirmishes. We figure a truce is better for everyone. But seeing you sit there, looking like you want to rip my clothes off and beat me with them, makes me think you're not in a negotiating mood."
"You're flatteringly self-confident," Adrian grunted, though his inner demon was practically howling at the imagery. "But a truce requires leverage. What do you have to offer besides your pretty face?"
Before Zafriel could answer, a sudden, high-pitched screech tore through the chamber.
The shadows clinging to the vaulted ceiling twisted violently. From the darkness, three figures draped in tattered, void-infused robes plummeted downward. Rogue shadow assassins—remnants of Arven's loyalists, or perhaps a third faction altogether, seizing the moment of Adrian’s weakness to strike.
"Die, tyrant!" one of them shrieked, unleashing a wave of unstable, volatile void magic.
The magical blast didn't target Adrian; it slammed directly into the massive, load-bearing basalt pillar right above Zafriel’s head. The stone groaned, a deafening crack echoing through the room as a multi-ton block of obsidian and debris began to fall, accelerating at a terrifying speed straight toward the light envoy.
Time seemed to dilate.
Zafriel’s eyes widened, his hands starting to glow with a defensive barrier, but the sheer volume of the falling masonry was too immense, the magic-suppressing runes in the Spire slowing his reaction time.
Adrian didn’t think. He didn’t let the system or the code decide.
With an explosion of raw, physical power, he launched himself off the Seat of Ruin. His legs, thick with demonic muscle, propelled him across the dais in a fraction of a second. He blurred through the air, his shadow wrapping around him like a cloak.
"Get down!" Adrian roared.
He collided with Zafriel, his massive body slamming into the light champion. The impact was violent, a rush of adrenaline and wind, sending them both crashing to the hard stone floor. Adrian rolled, instantly shifting his weight to pin Zafriel beneath him, using his own broad, armored back as a shield against the falling debris.
Boom!
A massive block of obsidian shattered against Adrian’s shoulders. The impact vibrated through his bones, a dull, agonizing ache blooming across his back, but his skin, tough as iron, held. He gritted his teeth, a low growl escaping his throat as dust and stone rained down around them, trapping them in a tight, dark pocket of ruins.
For a long, suspended second, neither of them moved.
The physical proximity was overwhelming. Adrian was pinned directly on top of Zafriel, their chests pressed flush against each other. He could feel the rapid, frantic beat of Zafriel’s heart against his own ribcage. The light champion’s breath was hot against Adrian’s neck, a sweet, agonizing contrast to the cold stone beneath them.
Zafriel’s hands had instinctively flown up to Adrian’s chest, his fingers clutching the rough, charcoal-grey skin of the demon’s shoulders. His blue eyes, wide with a mixture of shock and sheer adrenaline, stared up into Adrian’s. Their lips were inches apart, the air between them thick with a sudden, suffocating heat that had nothing to do with the falling debris.
Adrian’s demonic instincts flared again, but this time, the urge to destroy was entirely replaced by a desperate, possessive urge to hold, to feel the heat of the light champion against his cold skin. He stared down at Zafriel’s parted lips, his chest rising and falling in heavy, ragged gasps.
"You..." Zafriel breathed, his voice barely a whisper, his gaze darting down to Adrian's mouth before snapping back to his eyes. "You just saved me."
"Don't get used to it," Adrian rasped, his voice deeper, thicker with a raw, primal edge. He forced himself to pull back slightly, though the friction of their bodies moving against each other sent a jolt of electricity straight down his spine.
Above them, the dust began to settle. The sound of clashing steel echoed from the other side of the debris. Kaelan and the guards were quickly dismantling the remaining assassins.
With a grunt of exertion, Adrian shoved a massive boulder off his shoulder, shattering it into harmless gravel with a quick, brutal sweep of his clawed hand. He stood up, offering a hand to Zafriel.
Zafriel stared at the large, clawed hand for a beat, a complex swirl of emotions crossing his handsome face, before taking it. Adrian pulled him up easily, the physical contact lingering a second longer than necessary before they parted.
The throne room was a mess of rubble and dust. The rogue assassins lay dead on the floor, their bodies dissolving into dark mist. Kaelan Rith hurried over, his sword still drawn, his eyes darting between the rubble, the dead assassins, and his king.
"My Lord!" Kaelan stammered, his jaw practically on the floor. "You... you saved the envoy? Why? We could have let the rocks do our job for us."
Adrian wiped a layer of grey soot from his chest, his eyes cold. "If the Light Alliance's champion dies in my throne room, it starts a war I have no interest in fighting today. Clear this trash out. All of you. Out."
Kaelan hesitated, looking at Zafriel, then back to Adrian. "But, Sire, the security—"
"I said, get out," Adrian growled, a warning note in his voice that brooked no argument.
Kaelan bowed quickly, gesturing for the guards to follow. Within moments, the heavy doors closed once more, leaving the ruined throne room in a tense, echoing silence.
Only the two of them remained.
Adrian turned his back to Zafriel, walking slowly back toward the dais to hide the slight tremor in his hands. The magical exhaustion was hitting him tenfold now, his body screaming for rest. He braced his hand against the side of the damaged throne, exhaling a long, ragged breath.
He expected Zafriel to leave, to run back to his army and report the madness he had just witnessed.
But when Adrian turned around, Zafriel hadn't moved an inch.
The light champion stood amidst the ruined stone, brushing a layer of white dust off his gold-trimmed shoulder pads. His bright blue eyes were locked onto Adrian, filled with a strange, intense scrutiny that felt as if it were peeling back the layers of Adrian’s monstrous exterior, searching for the soul hidden deep within.

Humans, demons, villages... they're going to wipe us all out."The heavy, humid air of the cavern grew instantly freezing. "Alric, breathe. Hang on. Who authorized this? The Grand Inquisitor?""Daryen Surin..." Alric gasped, his eyes rolling back as the light magic stabilized his shallow breathing. "He brought the decree. Zafriel asked, his brow furrowing as he looked from the empty air back to Adrian. "The air felt... glitched.
