Dustin spent his first morning at the rescue base cutting every string that tied him to Elena. He split their savings down the middle, transferred her share, and updated his emergency contact to his vice-captain, Mark.

Every utility account, insurance policy, and maintenance schedule he had quietly managed so Elena could focus on her business went into a single folder. He emailed it to her office and logged out.

At five that evening, Elena walked into the company garage after hours of meetings. When she pressed the ignition on her sedan, the engine clicked and died.

Out of habit, she dialed Dustin. For five years, whenever a tire went flat or a pipe burst at home, he was always the one who fixed it.

He answered after several rings. "What is it?"

"My car won't start in the garage," Elena said, leaning back against the headrest. "The battery seems dead. Come take a look after your shift."

"I don't handle your car anymore, Elena."

The line went dead. A second later, a contact card for a twenty-four-hour towing service popped up on her screen.

Elena stared at the screen, stunned, before dialing him right back.

"What is this, Dustin?" she demanded the second he picked up. "Are you really going to be this petty over a dead battery?"

"I'm not getting back at you," Dustin replied evenly. "I'm just no longer acting as your husband."

Elena let out a dry, frustrated laugh. "We haven't signed anything yet. There's no need to treat each other like complete strangers over an argument."

"Since we're getting a divorce, you might as well get used to it early. From now on, take care of your own things."

His quiet tone unsettled her. In the past, he would have argued or explained himself, but this calm indifference felt like a solid wall.

"Don't take this too far, Dustin," she said, her grip tightening on the steering wheel. "I gave you space to cool off, but—"

A call clicked through from Caleb. Elena tapped the screen without hesitation.

"Elena, please come quickly," Caleb said, his voice trembling on the verge of tears. "Leo fell off the slide at school and cut his knee. He won't stop crying, and he keeps asking for Mommy. I don't know what to do."

"Don't panic, Caleb," Elena said, all thoughts of her car and Dustin gone. "Have the teacher clean it. I'm taking a cab and I'll be there in ten minutes."

She hung up without another word to Dustin and hurried out to the street. In her mind, Dustin was strong and could handle himself, while Caleb and the boy were fragile and needed her immediately.

In his dorm room, Dustin listened to the quiet tone of the dropped line. In the past, he would have waited by the phone for her to call back and explain.

This time, he laid the phone face down, opened a mission report, and went back to work.

It was nearly midnight when Elena finally unlocked the front door of the villa, exhausted from hours at the clinic and putting Leo to bed.

The dark house was cold. For five years, there had always been a thermos of warm soup and a glass of water waiting on the counter whenever she worked late, but tonight the kitchen was completely bare.

She pulled out her phone and texted him: Leo got hurt at school and needed stitches, which is why I had to rush off. Send someone to look at my car tomorrow morning.

Ten minutes passed, but the screen stayed dark. An hour passed, then two, without a single reply.

Standing alone in the quiet foyer, looking out at the empty driveway where Dustin's truck had always been parked, a cold dread settled into Elena's stomach. For the first time, she felt an uneasy realization that something she had taken for granted was quietly slipping away.

Before dawn, Chief Miller called Dustin into the command office, a red emergency file open on the desk between them."The passenger ship Starlight Wave lost power near the reef, Dustin," Miller said quietly, looking at his plastered leg. "You don't have to take this one. Your injury isn't healed, and you have a family to think about."Dustin adjusted his uniform jacket. "Three hundred lives are drifting toward the rocks, Chief. My team needs a captain out there, not an excuse."Before entering an extreme danger zone, base protocol required confirming next of kin. Dustin had already updated his internal files to Mark, but because the divorce wasn't finalized, the legal system still required notifying his wife.He dialed Elena's number. The first two calls went straight to voicemail, but on the third attempt, she finally picked up."Dustin, why are you calling me three times in a row?" Elena's voice came through, tired and impatient against the background chatter of a waiting room. "I'm

His eyes fell upon the white legal document, and tears quickly welled up in his eyes."Elena, is that the divorce paper from Brother Dustin?" Caleb asked in a soft, trembling voice. "It is all my fault. If my staying here ruins your marriage, Leo and I will pack our bags and leave right now.""Sit down, Caleb," Elena said, waving her hand with cold certainty. "You and Leo are not going anywhere.""If I let you leave now, it would be admitting that I did something wrong," Elena continued, her voice s
