Outside the inquiry hall, Dustin stood leaning heavily on his cane in his captain's uniform, his injured leg throbbing with every shift of weight.

Elena rushed down the corridor toward him, clutching a thick leather folder against her chest.

"Dustin, wait," she said, her voice dropping to an anxious whisper as she caught up to him. "We need to talk about the report before you step inside."

Dustin looked down at her with tired, unblinking eyes. "The hearing starts in ten minutes, Elena. There is nothing left to discuss."

"Of course there is," she insisted, stepping closer. "When they ask about the voyage logs, don't emphasize that Caleb kept the ship out. If the board decides he ignored the storm warnings, his surveyor license is gone."

A dull, bitter ache tightened in Dustin’s chest. “So you’re once again asking me to stand before the board and give a false report, risking my own job just for him?”

"Think about the bigger picture," Elena said defensively. "Caleb has a four-year-old boy to raise, and our entire port project is on the line. If he loses his career over one mistake, Leo suffers."

"And what about my crew?" Dustin asked, his knuckles whitening against the grip of his cane. "Does your bigger picture mean I should betray twelve men who risked their lives?"

"Nobody is asking you to take the blame," Elena said quickly. "I'm not asking you to lie, Dustin. I'm just asking you not to let personal feelings ruin someone's future."

Dustin looked at the woman he had spent five years cherishing, seeing only a stranger. "I will speak according to the facts. I have never lied on an official log, and I won't start today."

Inside the inquiry room, the atmosphere was suffocating. Dustin took the stand, his voice steady as he laid out the timeline from the first gale warning to the flooded hull.

The investigators reviewed the logs, and the chief inspector glared down at Caleb in the second row. "The radio logs confirm your vessel was ordered back two hours before the crash. You chose to ignore safety protocol, which points to criminal negligence—"

"Excuse me, Chief Inspector," Elena suddenly stood up from the front row, her voice cutting clearly across the silent hall.

Every eye in the room turned toward her in surprise. Dustin looked over, his breath hitching as he saw the steely determination on his wife's face.

"Before you assign primary blame to Caleb, there is a personal matter the board must consider," Elena announced, meeting the panel's gaze without flinching.

"Captain Rhodes has had severe personal disputes with Mr. Hayes recently," she continued calmly. "Dustin is my husband, and our private marital conflict has clouded his judgment. I ask the board to question whether his report is driven by personal jealousy."

A dead, crushing silence fell over the room. The inspectors stared between Dustin and his wife in shock, whispers rippling through the benches.

Dustin sat frozen in the witness chair, a cold, suffocating pain tearing through him. In the sinking ship, she had stripped his mask; at home, she had tossed out his memories; but now, she was weaponizing their sacred vows to destroy his life's honor before the world.

He pushed himself up, his cane digging hard into the floor as he stood straight before the panel.

"Since Director Caldwell claims I am acting out of marital spite," Dustin said, his voice ringing with chilling authority, "I formally request the board pull the harbor dispatch recordings right now."

He pointed toward the audio terminal. "Every call between the tower and the *Ocean Pioneer* is logged on the master frequency. Play the tape and let the truth speak for itself."

The inspectors loaded the master audio. Within seconds, Caleb's frantic voice spilled from the speakers, stubbornly refusing to turn back so he could complete his survey tests.

Caleb went pale as a corpse in the second row. The chief inspector promptly cleared the rescue team of all doubt and ordered a criminal inquiry into Caleb Hayes.

When the session ended, Dustin limped out into the empty marble corridor, his jaw set tight. Elena rushed after him, catching his sleeve with trembling fingers.

"Dustin, wait," she breathed, looking up at him with strained anxiety. "You have to understand why I did that. They were going to destroy Caleb on the spot. I only wanted the panel to remain objective."

Dustin stopped and turned, looking into her eyes with a stillness that made her voice die in her throat.

"Tell me one thing, Elena," Dustin said softly, every word laced with quiet heartbreak. "If I were the one facing criminal charges today, would you ever publicly tear down Caleb to save me?"

Elena froze, her lips parting as the silence stretched like a chasm between them. She looked away, unable to answer.

Dustin looked at her one last time, feeling the final ember in his chest turn to ash. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the folded legal paper, and pressed it into her trembling hands.

"Sign it and send it to Simon Vance," Dustin said quietly. "Don't force me to drag you into court to finish this."

He turned on his heel and walked away, his cane clicking steadily against the cold floor until the sound vanished down the hall.

Elena stood alone, looking down at the bold heading in her hands: Settlement Agreement for Dissolution of Marriage. Below it was Dustin's signature, written in neat, unwavering ink.

Her gaze drifted to the date stamped right beside his name, and her heart skipped a violent beat.

The agreement had been signed the morning after the shipwreck—hours before she had even bothered to visit his hospital bed.

A wave of sickening dread washed over her as the paper trembled in her grip. She had spent days convincing herself he was just throwing a jealous tantrum to make her back down, but he had already walked out of her life before she ever looked back.

Before dawn, Chief Miller called Dustin into the command office, a red emergency file open on the desk between them."The passenger ship Starlight Wave lost power near the reef, Dustin," Miller said quietly, looking at his plastered leg. "You don't have to take this one. Your injury isn't healed, and you have a family to think about."Dustin adjusted his uniform jacket. "Three hundred lives are drifting toward the rocks, Chief. My team needs a captain out there, not an excuse."Before entering an extreme danger zone, base protocol required confirming next of kin. "It is all my fault. If my staying here ruins your marriage, Leo and I will pack our bags and leave right now.""Sit down, Caleb," Elena said, waving her hand with cold certainty.
