By the time Elena drove back to the seaside villa from the maritime board, her hands were still shaking on the steering wheel.
She walked in and tossed the divorce agreement onto the glass coffee table, refusing to sign it. With her arms crossed, she paced the living room, telling herself Dustin was still bluffing and only making a bigger scene because she had defended Caleb at the hearing.
Caleb walked out of the kitchen holding a mug of warm tea, his face pale and full of delicate worry. His eyes fell upon the white legal document, and tears quickly welled up in his eyes.
"Elena, is that the divorce paper from Brother Dustin?" Caleb asked in a soft, trembling voice. "It is all my fault. If my staying here ruins your marriage, Leo and I will pack our bags and leave right now."
"Sit down, Caleb," Elena said, waving her hand with cold certainty. "You and Leo are not going anywhere."
"If I let you leave now, it would be admitting that I did something wrong," Elena continued, her voice sharp and stubborn. "I made a promise to your sister, and giving you shelter is not a crime."
Caleb sat on the edge of the armchair, gripping the mug with both hands. "But Elena... what if Brother Dustin really doesn't come back this time?"
Elena let out a short, dismissive scoff, shaking her head with total confidence. "Dustin won't leave. In five years of marriage, he has always been the one to smooth things over after every single argument."
She looked around the bright, expensive villa with proud eyes. "He loves this house, and he cares about our home more than anyone. He just needs a few days to swallow his foolish pride."
Later that evening, the heavy front door clicked open. Elena looked up from her tablet, a triumphant smirk appearing on her lips as Dustin walked into the foyer, leaning on his cane and carrying an empty cardboard box.
"I told Caleb you would come back," Elena said, setting her tablet aside and rising to her feet with a forgiving posture.
She walked over to him, tilting her chin up. "Take back that ridiculous divorce paper, Dustin. Apologize for the way you attacked Caleb at the hearing today, and we can forget this whole mess ever happened."
Dustin did not even look at the coffee table. He leaned on his cane, his eyes cold, flat, and completely empty. "I am not here to talk to you, Elena. I am here to take the last of my things."
The confident smile on Elena’s face froze, then vanished in an instant. Her eyebrows pulled together in sharp annoyance.
"Do you really have to empty out the entire house?" Elena demanded, her voice rising in frustration. "Are you really going to make such a childish scene over nothing?"
"I never had much in this house to begin with," Dustin replied calmly, walking past her toward the hallway.
Elena followed him into the small study, watching him take down his maritime certifications, his cold-weather rescue jacket, and his emergency kit. Not a single photo of her or memento of their marriage went into the box.
Her chest burned with sudden, uncontrollable irritation at his total calm. "Dustin, stop packing right now! You are acting completely ridiculous!"
Dustin taped the top of the box shut with steady hands, entirely deaf to her complaints. He hoisted the box under his left arm and turned back toward the foyer.
"If you walk out with that box tonight, Dustin, don't you dare expect me to ever come looking for you!" Elena threatened, her pride flaring up like fire. "You won't get another second chance!"
Dustin stopped at the front door, looking right into her proud eyes without a single flicker of hesitation. "I never planned on you coming."
Before Elena could snap back, Dustin’s heavy emergency radio on his belt let out a loud, piercing alarm. He pulled it up and pressed the receiver to his ear.
"Captain Rhodes speaking," Dustin answered, his voice instantly turning sharp and professional.
Mark’s urgent shout blasted through the speaker, echoing loudly in the quiet foyer. "Captain! Emergency recall! A severe offshore gale has intensified into a violent storm! A large passenger vessel, the Starlight Wave, has lost power near the shoals and needs immediate evacuation!"
"I am ten minutes away," Dustin answered without hesitation. "Prep the twin cutters and get the heavy tow cables ready."
He clicked the radio off, tucked the box tighter under his arm, and pushed open the front door.
"Dustin, wait!" Elena called out, taking a hurried step toward the porch. "The weather outside is dangerous, and your leg is still broken!"
Dustin did not pause for a second, stepping out into the howling wind and rain without looking back once.
Elena stood frozen in the open doorway, staring at the empty coat hooks and the bare shoe rack. The villa suddenly felt terrifyingly large and hollow, sending a sharp, cold chill through her chest that she could not shake off.
Her phone began ringing loudly from the living room, breaking the heavy silence. She walked over and answered it, hearing Caleb's anxious voice on the line.
"Elena, Leo is crying again because his knee hurts," Caleb said softly. "Could you bring him a warm glass of milk?"
Elena tightened her fingers around the phone, looking out into the pitch-black rain where Dustin had disappeared. "I'm coming, Caleb."
She told herself Dustin was just on a routine rescue mission like he had done a hundred times before. There would be plenty of time to deal with him once he returned to shore.

"Who is searching for me?" Dustin asked weakly through cracked lips, his voice raw from two days of salt water and freezing wind.Over the crackling radio speaker, Mark's breath hitched before he answered quietly. "Director Caldwell. She hasn't left the pier since your cutter capsized, Captain. Should I notify her that you're alive right away?"Dustin stared up at the rusted steel rivets of the cabin ceiling, his chest aching with every shallow breath. After a long, hollow silence, he pressed the microphone button and answered softly, "Not yet."Two hours later, an offshore cutter transferred him to the mainland harbor, where an ambulance rushed him straight to the maritime trauma center. Elena only received official confirmation from dispatch after Dustin had already been admitted into the private recovery wing on the fourth floor. She abandoned her car in the emergency zone and sprinted through the rain into the building, leaving wet footprints across the floor. Chapter 7
Before dawn, Chief Miller called Dustin into the command office, a red emergency file open on the desk between them."The passenger ship Starlight Wave lost power near the reef, Dustin," Miller said quietly, looking at his plastered leg. "You don't have to take this one. Your injury isn't healed, and you have a family to think about."Dustin adjusted his uniform jacket. "Three hundred lives are drifting toward the rocks, Chief. My team needs a captain out there, not an excuse."Before entering an extreme danger zone, base protocol required confirming next of kin. Dustin had already updated his internal files to Mark, but because the divorce wasn't finalized, the legal system still required notifying his wife.He dialed Elena's number. The first two calls went straight to voicemail, but on the third attempt, she finally picked up."Dustin, why are you calling me three times in a row?"
