Kael spun toward the voice, his pulse pounding.

"So... the heir has finally awakened."

The trees swayed gently in the night breeze, but no one stood among them.

"Who's there?" Kael called, forcing himself to his feet.

Silence.

Only the chirping of insects answered him.

He took a cautious step forward, scanning the shadows between the trunks. Every muscle in his body ached from the battle in the capital, and the strange power inside him felt like a sleeping beast, waiting to awaken again.

"I'm warning you!" he shouted, though his voice lacked confidence.

Still nothing.

After several tense moments, Kael realized whoever had spoken was gone—or perhaps had never been there at all.

He glanced once more at the puddle beside the road.

His silver eyes stared back at him.

"They're real..."

He pulled the hood of his tattered cloak over his head and disappeared into the forest before dawn could reveal him.

---

By sunrise, the Kingdom of Valenor was in chaos.

The Grand Execution Plaza had become a graveyard.

Shattered stone covered the streets. Burned wagons lay overturned, and the bodies of fallen soldiers were carried away one after another. The surviving witnesses spoke in frightened whispers about living shadows that had risen from the earth itself.

Inside the royal palace, the atmosphere was even darker.

The throne room was silent as King Aldren listened to the reports.

A captain knelt before the throne, his armor stained with dust and blood.

"...Out of three hundred royal guards stationed at the execution, fewer than eighty survived, Your Majesty."

The king's expression remained unreadable.

"And the prisoner?"

"He escaped."

A heavy silence settled over the chamber.

Several nobles lowered their heads, expecting the king's fury.

Instead...

King Aldren slowly rose from his throne.

His crimson cloak flowed behind him as he descended the marble steps.

"The Shadow Core has awakened."

The words sent chills through everyone present.

An elderly minister frowned.

"Your Majesty... are you saying the ancient legends were true?"

The king stopped before the towering stained-glass window overlooking the capital.

"They were never legends."

He looked toward the distant horizon.

"If Kael Ashryn lives..."

"...this kingdom will never know peace."

He turned sharply.

"From this moment forward, Kael Ashryn is declared the greatest enemy of the Kingdom of Valenor."

His voice thundered through the hall.

"I authorize every knight, soldier, mercenary, mage, and bounty hunter within our borders to hunt him down."

The royal herald immediately stepped forward.

"And the reward, Your Majesty?"

The king's eyes hardened.

"One million gold crowns."

The entire throne room gasped.

One million.

It was enough wealth to buy a castle... or an entire town.

No bounty in Valenor's history had ever reached such an amount.

"And," the king continued, "whoever captures him alive shall receive a noble title and lands within the kingdom."

The nobles exchanged stunned glances.

The hunt had begun.

---

Before noon, royal messengers spread across every city, village, and fortress.

Wanted posters appeared on walls, tavern doors, and market squares.

Each carried the same portrait.

KAEL ASHRYN

Wanted Dead or Alive

Reward: One Million Gold Crowns

People gathered around the notices.

"So young..."

"Doesn't matter."

"For one million gold? I'd turn in my own brother."

Across the kingdom, greed awakened.

---

In the bustling city of Blackstone, a group of veteran mercenaries studied the poster.

"The reward's real?"

"It bears the royal seal."

Their leader grinned.

"Looks like we're getting rich."

---

High in the Frostpeak Mountains, a lone swordsman folded the notice and slipped it into his coat.

"A million gold..."

He smiled faintly.

"Worth the trip."

---

Deep inside the Whispering Marsh, a hooded woman watched the wanted notice burn in a campfire.

"The Shadow Monarch's heir..."

"So they've finally found you."

She extinguished the flames with her boot and vanished into the mist.

---

Meanwhile...

Kael wandered deeper into the Emerald Forest.

His legs felt heavy.

His clothes were torn.

He hadn't eaten since escaping the capital.

Every sound made him flinch.

He could still hear the screams from the execution plaza.

Still see the shadows tearing soldiers apart.

"I killed them..."

His voice cracked.

Even if he hadn't wanted it...

People had died because of him.

He sank beside a small stream and splashed cold water over his face.

The silver in his eyes had faded slightly, though they still shimmered whenever the light struck them.

"What am I becoming?"

His reflection offered no answers.

A growl interrupted his thoughts.

Kael looked up.

A lean gray wolf stood on the opposite bank, watching him cautiously.

For a long moment, neither moved.

Then the animal slowly backed away into the trees.

It hadn't attacked.

It had looked...

Afraid.

Kael's heart tightened.

Even wild beasts feared him now.

Night fell quickly beneath the dense forest canopy.

Exhausted, Kael found shelter beneath the roots of an ancient oak tree.

He closed his eyes for what he hoped would be only a short rest.

Minutes later...

A twig snapped.

Kael's eyes flew open.

Someone was there.

Not a soldier.

Not an animal.

A figure stood silently atop a nearby tree branch, completely hidden beneath a black cloak.

Only a pair of sharp amber eyes were visible beneath the hood.

The stranger looked down at Kael as though observing prey.

A curved dagger gleamed in one gloved hand.

The assassin smiled.

"So..."

"I finally found you."
