Chapter 4:Shadow Awakening

The explosion tore through the Grand Execution Plaza like the wrath of an ancient god.

Wooden beams splintered into thousands of fragments. Chunks of stone shot through the air as terrified screams echoed across the capital. A violent wave of black and violet energy swept outward, throwing soldiers, spectators, and even royal mages off their feet.

Kael felt the ropes binding him snap apart.

He crashed onto the shattered remains of the execution platform, coughing as dust filled his lungs.

"What... what happened?"

His entire body burned.

The strange mark on his left hand had spread beyond his wrist, forming intricate black patterns that pulsed like a living heartbeat. Every pulse sent unbearable pain racing through his veins.

"No... make it stop..."

The ground beneath him trembled again.

Deep below the ruins, something ancient answered his voice.

Thump.

It sounded like a heartbeat.

Not his own.

Another followed.

Thump...

Thump...

Each beat grew louder until it drowned out the chaos around him.

Then a voice echoed inside his mind.

"At last..."

Kael's eyes widened.

"Who's there?"

"My heir..."

The voice was ancient, powerful, and impossibly calm.

"The Shadow Core has accepted your blood."

Before Kael could speak, unbearable darkness surged through his body.

He screamed.

Black mist burst from his chest like a tidal wave.

The shadows beneath every soldier's feet began to move.

One soldier stared in horror as his own shadow stretched unnaturally across the ground.

"What is that?"

The shadow rose.

It peeled itself from the earth like liquid smoke, taking the shape of a towering black warrior with glowing violet eyes.

"Monster!"

The creature answered with a slash.

The soldier never had time to scream.

Blood sprayed across the broken plaza.

Panic erupted.

"They're alive!"

"Run!"

More shadows rose from the ground.

From beneath broken wagons...

From the cracks in the stones...

From the feet of fleeing citizens...

Each twisted into monstrous figures clad in dark armor, their bodies made entirely of living darkness.

The royal guards charged.

"For the king!"

Steel passed harmlessly through the creatures.

The shadows retaliated with terrifying speed.

One guard was thrown across the plaza.

Another disappeared beneath writhing black tendrils.

A captain raised his enchanted sword.

"Royal Mages! Destroy them!"

Several mages began chanting.

Blazing fireballs streaked toward the shadow creatures.

The explosions illuminated the plaza.

For a brief moment.

Then the darkness simply reformed.

One by one, the mages were swallowed.

The Grand Execution Plaza became a battlefield.

Kael watched in horror.

"No..."

His voice trembled.

"Stop..."

The creatures ignored him.

They slaughtered everyone who attacked.

Soldiers.

Knights.

Royal guards.

Anyone carrying a weapon.

Kael clutched his head as memories that weren't his own flashed before his eyes.

An endless army kneeling beneath a black throne.

A king cloaked in shadows.

A continent burning beneath a crimson sky.

The same voice echoed again.

"Command them."

"I don't know how!"

"They are yours."

Another shadow warrior ripped through three soldiers at once.

Kael staggered forward.

"Stop!"

His desperate cry echoed across the ruined plaza.

For a heartbeat...

Everything froze.

Every shadow warrior turned toward him.

Thousands of glowing violet eyes stared silently at their master.

Kael's breath caught.

"I..."

He didn't know what to say.

He had never wanted this.

He wasn't a monster.

The hesitation shattered his concentration.

A violent surge of power exploded from the mark on his hand.

Pain consumed him.

His vision blurred.

The shadows went berserk.

Without orders, they attacked everything in sight.

Buildings collapsed.

Stone statues crumbled.

The terrified crowd fled in every direction.

"Help!"

"Save us!"

Kael covered his ears.

"Stop!"

But the screams only grew louder.

The Shadow Core had awakened...

And he couldn't control it.

A surviving royal mage pointed toward Kael.

"Kill him!"

Five enchanted chains shot through the air.

They wrapped around Kael's arms and legs before tightening violently.

The moment they touched him...

The black mark flared.

The chains shattered into glittering fragments.

A wave of darkness erupted outward, knocking everyone nearby unconscious.

Kael fell to one knee, breathing heavily.

His body felt as though every drop of strength had been drained away.

He couldn't stay.

If he remained, more people would die.

With the last of his strength, he stumbled away from the ruined plaza.

No one dared stop him.

The surviving soldiers stared with fear rather than courage.

"The demon..."

"He wiped out the Royal Guard..."

"We can't fight that..."

Kael ran through the smoke-filled streets of the capital, his heartbeat pounding in his ears.

He didn't know where he was going.

Only that he had to get as far away as possible.

Behind him, the living shadows slowly dissolved into black mist, disappearing as suddenly as they had appeared.

Silence returned to the devastated plaza.

Far above, the storm clouds began to part.

Kael finally reached the edge of the city and collapsed beside an abandoned road.

His breathing was ragged.

His body trembled uncontrollably.

He looked down at his trembling hands.

"What... am I?"

A puddle of rainwater lay beside him.

As he leaned over it, his reflection stared back.

His black hair remained unchanged.

But his eyes...

The brown color he had known all his life was gone.

In its place shone a pair of brilliant, metallic silver eyes, glowing faintly in the darkness.

Kael recoiled in shock.

Before he could understand what had happened, a cold voice drifted through the trees behind him.

"So..."

"...the heir has finally awakened."
