Maya swung the delivery van into the access lane bordering the airfield's outer perimeter fence, killing the main headlights fifty yards before the secondary guard gate.

"Air traffic control has cleared his flight plan," Chloe said from the bench seat, her fingers flying over the laptop keys as she fed power from the van’s auxiliary battery into her terminal. "Marcus is using a private charter shell company. He’s filed a flight path directly to Zurich with an offshore fuel stop."

"How much time do we have?" Caleb asked, bracing his left shoulder as the van bounced over a rut in the dirt road. The nylon tourniquet Maya had tied beneath his jacket was holding, but every sharp movement sent a throb of heat through his upper arm.

"The ground crew just finished fueling," Chloe said, pointing at the live satellite feed tracking the sleek, twin-engine Gulfstream idling on the far end of Runway 09. "Pilot is running pre-flight checks right now. Once those turbines spool up, we can't intercept them."

Caleb pulled a fresh nine-millimeter magazine from the tactical kit on the floor and slapped it into his sidearm with his right hand. "Maya, take us through the service gate."

"That gate is chain-link reinforced with a concrete barrier stub," Maya warned, her hands tightening on the steering wheel. "It’ll wreck the radiator."

"We only need three hundred yards out of this engine," Caleb said, looking out through the rain-slicked windshield toward the distant tarmac where two armed guards in gray uniforms stood beneath the high-intensity floodlights of the hanger bay.

Maya didn't argue. She slammed her foot on the accelerator.

The van roared forward, its tires throwing up mud and gravel as it crossed the perimeter ditch.

The security guards at the gate swung their rifles toward the approaching vehicle, but before they could open fire, the van smashed directly through the chain-link barrier. Metal posts snapped with a loud screech, dragging across the van's roof as they tore onto the open tarmac.

"Hold on!" Maya yelled.

She swerved hard around a parked baggage tractor, heading straight down the taxiway parallel to Runway 09.

Across the open concrete, the white twin-engine jet was already beginning its taxi roll. High-pitched turbine whine filled the night air, rising to a scream as the engines spooled for takeoff momentum.

"He's accelerating!" Chloe shouted, holding her laptop flat against her lap as the van rattled violently over the runway expansion joints.

"Get us beside the nose gear," Caleb ordered.

Maya pulled the wheel to the left, crossing the white center line of the runway. The van surged alongside the accelerating aircraft, engine screaming in top gear as the jet’s left wing swept barely ten feet above the van's roof line.

Through the rain-streaked cabin window of the Gulfstream, Marcus Vance was visible sitting in the executive leather chair near the forward bulkhead. He held a satellite phone to his ear, his sharp eyes widening slightly as he recognized the battered van racing beside his plane.

Marcus immediately motioned toward his private security director sitting across the aisle.

The jet's emergency exit hatch near the left wing unlocked with a heavy pneumatic hiss, swinging outward against the rush of wind. An armed contractor in gray combat gear leaned out, raising a short-barreled assault rifle toward the van’s engine compartment.

"Caleb!" Maya yelled, ducking low over the wheel as the first burst of automatic fire punched through the van's hood, spraying hot steam and black oil across the windshield.

Caleb didn't duck. He leaned out of the passenger window, resting his right forearm against the frame to steady his aim against the violent vibration of the road.

He fired three rapid shots into the plane’s forward tires.

The heavy rubber of the nose gear exploded in a shower of shredded tread and sparks. The jet instantly jerked violently to the left, its rim grinding against the wet asphalt with a deafening metallic screech that threw up a massive cloud of white sparks.

"The wing!" Chloe screamed.

The sudden loss of steering sent the Gulfstream’s left wing dipping sharply. The wingtip scraped the runway surface, tearing open the outer fuel cell and spilling a trail of aviation fuel across the concrete behind them.

The pilot slammed on the emergency reverse thrusters. The aircraft veered off the main runway, skidding across two hundred yards of wet grass before coming to a violent stop against an inflatable perimeter crash barrier near the edge of the airfield.

Maya slammed the van's brakes, sending the vehicle sliding sideways across the wet grass before coming to a halt thirty yards from the smoking plane.

Caleb opened his door and stepped out onto the grass, his sidearm raised, the cold rain washing the oil spray from his face.

The jet’s main cabin door slowly unlatched and dropped down to form a staircase. Thick white smoke billowed from the left engine bay as two surviving mercenaries stumbled out onto the grass, disoriented and coughing.

Maya moved in quickly from the left, dropping both guards with precise, non-lethal leg shots before they could raise their weapons.

Caleb walked straight up the wet stairwell into the dim, smoking cabin of the jet.

Marcus Vance was leaning against the ruined bulkhead, his gray wool coat torn at the shoulder, holding a bleeding cut on his forehead. His silenced pistol lay on the carpet three feet away, out of reach.

He looked up at Caleb, his breathing heavy, but his eyes remained sharp and arrogant.

"You're too late, Caleb," Marcus rasped, wiping blood from his brow with a silk handkerchief. "The routing sequence for the Zurich trust was hard-linked to this aircraft's onboard satellite hub. The moment the plane crashed, an automated protocol executed. The master ledger didn't just upload to the SEC—it went live to every regional node of the Iron Consortium."

Caleb stopped five feet away, his gun pointed steadily at Marcus's chest. "Good. Then they know who lost their money."

Marcus let out a short, bitter laugh. "You think you're hunting us? The Consortium operates across three continents, Caleb. They don't arrest people who cross them. They erase them. You just put a target on your sister's back that no federal protection program can hide."

"My sister is safe," Caleb said softly. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the small, metallic Swiss security token Chloe had extracted at the warehouse, and held it up between his fingers. "And this token didn't just unlock your routing logs. It gave us read-write access to every private satellite node your consortium uses to communicate."

Marcus’s smile faded instantly. The color drained from his face as he stared at the small metal drive in Caleb's hand.

"You didn't broadcast the ledger to the authorities," Marcus whispered, realization striking him like a physical blow. "You broadcast my private signature to the Consortium."

"They think you betrayed them, Marcus," Caleb said, stepping back toward the cabin door as the distant wail of state police sirens began to echo from the highway outside the airfield gate. "They think you stole their master key and tried to run."

Caleb turned and walked down the stairwell into the rain, leaving Marcus standing alone in the smoking doorway of the plane.

Chloe and Maya were waiting by the van as Caleb reached the grass.

"State police just cleared the outer perimeter," Maya said, looking at the flashing lights fast approaching down the main runway. "We have less than two minutes before this entire airfield is locked down."

Caleb climbed into the back of the van, looking down at his bleeding shoulder, then back at the laptop sitting on the bench.

A new encrypted message was already flashing on Chloe’s screen—an incoming connection originating from an unknown server node based in London.

Chloe tapped the screen, her eyes wide as she read the single line of text floating over an encrypted header.

Mr. Thorne. Marcus Vance was merely a regional collector. If you wish to protect what remains of your family, you will bring the master key to the Grand Hotel in London before Sunday.

Caleb stared at the screen for three long seconds, his jaw tightening as the sirens grew louder in the darkness outside.

"Maya," Caleb said quietly, shutting the laptop lid with his good hand. "Drive."
