The Rooftop Escape

Heavy rain slashed across the open concrete pad of the rooftop helipad, mixing with the dense wash from a federal police helicopter hovering just fifty feet overhead. Its powerful searchlight cut through the gloom, casting blinding white beams across the rain-slicked surface and illuminating the shattered frame of the server room door behind them.

"They're clearing the lower stairwell landing!" Maya shouted over the roar of the rotors, keeping her low stance as she fired a single warning shot toward the service exit to keep pursuing guards pinned back inside.

Caleb grabbed Chloe by the arm, shielding her against the violent downwash of air as they sprinted toward the edge of the helipad.

"We can't wait for a chopper!" Chloe yelled, her voice strained as she clutched her jacket tight against the wind. "The airspace over the financial district is locked down by federal transit control. Anything airborne will be intercepted before it clears the third block!"

"We aren't taking a chopper," Caleb said, his voice cutting cleanly through the storm.

He pointed toward the far corner of the roof, where a heavy-duty maintenance cable ran from the primary electrical tower straight across the narrow gap to the roof of the adjacent commercial bank building fifty yards away.

Maya looked from the thick steel guideline dangling in the wind to the dark abyss separating the two skyscrapers. "A zip-line? Caleb, that cable is rated for heavy equipment hoists, not human weight without a harness rig. One slip and we drop straight down into the alley."

"We don't have a choice," Caleb replied, pulling a heavy steel carabiner and a spare tactical strap from his rig. He looped the heavy canvas strap securely around the steel guideline and clicked the metal clasp into place. "The federal marshals have already breached the roof access door. If we stay here thirty seconds longer, we're federal property."

A sharp burst of gunfire cracked from the ruined server room doorway. A lead round pinged off the concrete floor inches from Maya's boots, spraying sharp stone chips into the air.

"Move!" Maya yelled, lifting her pistol to return suppressive fire into the doorway.

Caleb didn't hesitate. He hoisted the submachine gun over his shoulder, grabbed Chloe by the tactical vest, and hooked them both onto the sliding carabiner rig.

"Hold on to my jacket," Caleb instructed tightly.

Before Chloe could answer, Caleb kicked off the edge of the concrete parapet, launching them both out into the open air above the rainy abyss.

The wind shrieked past their ears as gravity pulled them rapidly down the steep downward slope of the thick steel cable. Below them, the wet asphalt streets of the financial district looked like a maze of dark rivers reflecting neon signs and flashing red police lights.

Maya fired two more rapid shots behind them to cover their descent, then hooked her own secondary descender onto the wire, launching herself out into the dark storm right behind them.

The cable groaned under the sudden friction, emitting a high-pitched metallic squeal as they hurtled downward toward the opposite roof.

For a terrifying second, the momentum threatened to jerk Caleb's grip loose from the strap, but he locked his fingers around the nylon webbing, keeping Chloe braced safely against his chest.

With a hard, metallic crash, they slammed into the gravel-covered rooftop of the adjacent building, tumbling hard across the wet surface before coming to a rough stop against a low brick ventilation housing.

Chloe gasped for air, coughing as the rain beat down on her face. "Is... is everyone okay?"

"I'm alive," Maya grunted, rolling off the guideline anchor and landing hard on the gravel beside them as she quickly detached her harness. She scrambled to her feet and peered back across the gap toward Vanguard Tower.

On the opposite roof, several armed federal operatives and private security guards had crowded onto the helipad, shouting into their radios and pointing flashlights across the empty space between the buildings. But the distance was too great, and the heavy rain made accurate targeting impossible.

Caleb stood up slowly, brushing gravel and water from his jacket. He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out the encrypted micro-drive, making sure the casing was dry.

"They're locked out of the tower network, and Julian's assets are frozen in federal receivership," Caleb said, his eyes fixed on the distant flashing lights of the police cruisers surrounding Vanguard Tower. "But Julian is still inside that building."

Maya wiped the rain from her eyes, looking at Caleb with a sharp expression. "You think he's just going to sit there and let the authorities strip his company apart?"

"Julian built his entire empire on hidden off-the-books accounts and shell companies," Caleb said, turning away from the ledge and walking toward the building's interior access stairwell. "Freezing his main accounts only forces him to move his remaining liquidity through secondary channels. If we want to finish this, we need to know who backed him from overseas."

Chloe pushed herself up from the gravel, her expression hardening with resolve as she followed her brother. "When I was trapped in his private office, I copied a secondary encryption key from his private server before the lockdown. It links directly to an overseas wire transfer originating from Zurich."

Caleb stopped at the top of the stairwell door, pulling his tactical knife to check the lock.

"Then that's where we go next," Caleb said, opening the heavy metal door.
