The small screen of the burner phone flickered in the dark cellar, the glowing image of Chloe bound to a chair casting a harsh blue light across Caleb’s face.

Maya stepped closer, her eyes fixed on the display. "That's how Julian knew where to look," she whispered, her voice tight with sudden realization. "He didn't just track our network signal. He grabbed your sister from her apartment two hours ago as an insurance policy."

Caleb didn't speak. His fingers remained locked around the edges of the device, his knuckles turning white. The fifty million dollars they had just stripped from Vanguard’s offshore accounts was safely locked in escrow, but victory felt hollow when weighed against a hostage he had spent three years trying to keep out of the corporate crossfire.

"Caleb, you can't walk into Vanguard Tower," Maya said, grabbing his arm. "It's a suicide mission. Julian's private security team will be waiting at every elevator bank. They won't take you to the boardroom—they'll put a bullet in your head in the underground garage and take the phone by force."

"If I don't go, Chloe pays for it," Caleb said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, steady calm. He slipped the burner phone into his inner coat pocket and bent down to pick up the submachine gun dropped by the unconscious operative. He checked the magazine, snapped it back into place, and slung the strap over his shoulder.

"We're not going in through the front lobby," Caleb added, heading toward the cellar stairs.

Maya stared at him for a second, then followed him up into the damp night air. "Then how do we get past twenty floors of armed corporate security?"

"By using the old utility shaft," Caleb said as they climbed out of the cellar and sprinted toward the alleyway where an old municipal maintenance van sat half-hidden under a rusted tarp. "When we audited the tower's foundational infrastructure three years ago, I mapped every service line running beneath the financial district. The main data trunk runs directly from the sub-basement cooling plant straight up to Julian's executive suite on the thirty-second floor."

They scrambled into the van. Caleb tossed the keys to Maya—who caught them with reflexes honed from years of surviving corporate espionage—and slid into the passenger seat as the engine roared to life with a thick cloud of exhaust.

The drive through the rain-slicked city streets took less than fifteen minutes. The financial district was dead silent, save for the hum of neon signs reflecting off wet pavement and the occasional police cruiser patrolling the main avenues.

Maya cut the headlights two blocks away from Vanguard Tower, coasting the van into the subterranean delivery dock behind the skyscraper.

The loading bay was dark, but a single private security cruiser was parked near the freight elevator doors. Two guards in heavy tactical vests stood smoking under the concrete overhang, chatting quietly while checking their tablets.

Caleb cut the engine. He reached into the back of the van, pulled out a spare set of dark coveralls, and tossed one to Maya.

"Put these on," Caleb instructed, sliding his arms into the heavy canvas sleeves. "We look like late-night maintenance contractors responding to a cooling system failure."

"They'll spot us the moment we walk past the security scanner," Maya warned, pulling the jacket over her shoulders.

"Not if we don't use the scanner," Caleb replied. He popped open the maintenance hatch built into the floor of the loading bay. A rusted iron ladder descended into darkness, accompanied by the low, heavy hum of the building's industrial ventilation system. "The old HVAC access tunnel runs directly beneath their checkpoint. It bypasses every biometric lock in the building."

They dropped down into the narrow concrete tunnel, the air growing warmer and damper as they hurried forward through the shadows.

Ten minutes later, Caleb pried open a heavy steel grate at the end of the service shaft, pushing it outward with a quiet clatter. They slipped through into a sub-basement utility corridor lined with massive copper pipes and high-voltage electrical conduits.

Caleb led the way toward the main service elevator shaft, pulling the submachine gun from his shoulder and checking the safety switch.

"Once we hit the thirty-second floor, things are going to move fast," Caleb said, turning to look at Maya. "If anything goes wrong, you take the service stairwell down and get out of the city with the ledger backup."

Maya looked back at him, her expression hardening with resolve. "I didn't come this far to watch you play hero alone, Caleb. We finish this together."

Caleb gave a brief nod. He punched the override code into the service elevator's manual control panel, bypassing the digital lock with a short-circuited wiring bypass.

The heavy metal doors groaned open, revealing a vertical shaft bathed in dim emergency red light.

As they stepped inside and hit the button for the top floor, the elevator began its rapid ascent, carrying them straight into the heart of Vanguard Tower—and straight into Julian Vance's trap.
