"Kid, you better start talking. That snack just turned my blood back to fire. Where did you get that, and more importantly… how many more of those can you make?"

Rafael felt his back hit the cold, unyielding metal of the locker wall. Kirill’s grip on his collar wasn’t malicious—it was desperate, the frantic hold of a drowning man grabbing a life preserver.

"I told you, it’s just the class ability," Rafael stammered, his pulse hammering in his ears. "I don’t have a stockpile, Kirill. I just… I made that one because I thought I was going to die. I didn’t know it would do that."

Kirill’s eyes flicked to the locker door, then back to Rafael, his jaw tightening. "You’re lying. You’ve got more of that stuff. That wasn't just a snack; it was a combat buff that put my passive regen to shame. Do you have any idea how much a healer—or a potion-maker—is worth in a place like this?"

"I’m not a potion-maker! I’m a Cook!" Rafael pushed at Kirill’s arm, though his muscles felt like jelly. "Look, if you want more, you need to give me materials. The system… it doesn't just pull food out of thin air. It needs ingredients. Monster parts, essence, whatever."

Kirill released him, though his eyes remained glued to Rafael’s face, searching for a sign of deception. He let out a sharp, jagged breath and wiped a streak of oily black blood from his forehead. "Ingredients. Right. So, you’re telling me if I bring you the corpses of those things out there, you can turn them into fuel?"

"I… I think so," Rafael said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "But you saw what’s out there. I can’t exactly walk into the hallway and start butchering monsters. I’m a level one cook with no combat stats. I’m fodder."

Kirill let out a harsh, dry laugh. He leaned back against the locker, his posture slumping slightly, though the lethal tension in his shoulders remained. "You think I want to be out there alone? My party is dead, Rafael. Everyone in the locker room—my linemen, my receivers—they didn't make it past the first wave. I’m the only one left who can swing a blade."

"Then we’re both screwed," Rafael muttered, clutching his knees. "Why are you still talking to me? Go find someone who isn't a kitchen-duty reject."

Kirill turned his head, staring at the locker vent where the carnage outside was still audible—the wet, rhythmic tearing of flesh, the distant screams of survivors. "Because nobody else can do what you just did. My mana pool is tapped out. If I go back out there, I’ll be fighting with a dull sword and a broken lung. But with you? With those snacks?"

He held up a calloused, bloody hand. "We strike a deal. You become my personal chef. You keep me fed, keep my stats maxed out, and I keep you alive. I kill the things that try to eat you, and you make sure I never run out of juice. Sound like a plan?"

Rafael looked at the star quarterback, seeing the raw, predatory calculation in his eyes. It was a terrifying offer. "What if I say no?"

Kirill leaned in, his voice dropping to a low, gravelly hum. "Then I leave this locker right now, and you’re left in here with nothing but your apron and your nerves. How long do you think you’ll last before the scent of your fear draws them in?"

Rafael swallowed hard. The reality of the situation crashed over him. He was a Cook with a unique skill, but he was currently just a boy in a metal box. "Okay. Fine. But I need supplies. I can't cook with nothing."

"Good," Kirill said, his mouth curling into a grim, humorless smile. "We’re going to need a kitchen. Or at least a place where I can keep you safe while you work."

"We’re not staying in the locker?" Rafael asked, his voice wavering.

"This is a coffin, not a base," Kirill scoffed. "We move. I know where the cafeteria is. If the ovens are still running, or if there’s even a functional workspace, that’s where we go. It’s better than being cramped in a glorified trash can."

Rafael stood up, his legs shaking, and adjusted his oversized school hoodie. "The cafeteria? That’s on the other side of the gym. That’s where the Feral Stalker is."

Kirill drew his blade—a heavy, serrated piece of enchanted steel that pulsed with a faint, dying red light. "Exactly. That’s where the ingredients are."

Rafael looked at his own hands, his mind racing. He opened the system menu, watching as the [Culinary Enhancement] skill icon flickered with a soft, hungry amber light. He felt the cold, hard weight of a scavenged monster bone in his pocket—a component he had picked up in the chaos of the classroom earlier.

"Wait," Rafael whispered. "I have one more piece. A bone shard. From the science wing."

Kirill turned, his eyebrows arching. "What can you do with that?"

Rafael focused. He grabbed the bone shard, channeling his intent into it, just as he had with the Feral Heart. The amber light flared, brighter this time, wrapping around his palm like a living flame. He pulled a discarded, crushed packet of cafeteria salt from the pocket of his cargo pants.

[ Skill: Culinary Enhancement ]

[ Material Detected: Monster Bone Fragment (Common) ]

[ Infusion: Saline Catalyst ]

[ Result: Minor Stamina Restoration Broth ]

The bone shard didn't turn to paste this time; it softened, its structural integrity collapsing into a glowing, viscous liquid that soaked into the salt packet. The scent changed instantly—a sharp, briny, metallic aroma that made Rafael’s own mouth water.

He handed the glowing, salt-crusted packet to Kirill. "It’s not a meal. It’s… it’s a concentrate. If you feel like you’re slipping, take this. It should give you a secondary burst."

Kirill took the packet, eyeing it with a mixture of reverence and hunger. He shoved it into his belt pouch, his expression softening just a fraction. "You’re a weird kid, Rafael. But you might just be the most important person in this school."

"Don't flatter me," Rafael whispered, stepping out of the locker. The hallway hit him like a physical blow—the smell of copper, ozone, and rotting meat. "Just keep your word. Keep them away from me."

Kirill moved out of the locker, his presence suddenly massive, his body coiled and ready for violence. He stood in front of Rafael, shielding him from the dark, blood-slicked corridor. "Stay behind me. Don't look at the mess on the walls. Just watch my back, and when I say I’m hungry, you better have something ready."

"I will," Rafael said, gripping his makeshift toolkit—a rusted screwdriver and a pair of shears he’d swiped from the science lab. "But don't expect a Michelin-star meal until we get to a proper prep area."

Kirill chuckled, a low sound that lacked any warmth. He started moving down the hall, his boots silent on the blood-soaked floor. "We’ll settle for survival for now. But once we hit the cafeteria? You’re going to show me what a Unique class can really do."

Rafael followed, his heart hammering against his ribs. He watched Kirill’s back, seeing the way the man moved—fluid, lethal, and undeniably strong. They were a bizarre duo: the fallen hero and the terrified chef.

As they rounded the corner toward the gym, a low, guttural snarl emanated from the darkness ahead. A pair of glowing, sickly yellow eyes ignited in the shadows, accompanied by the sound of clicking claws against tile.

Kirill didn't hesitate. He shifted his grip on his blade, his stance widening, and glanced back at Rafael with a feral grin. "Showtime, kid. Hope you’re ready to start cooking."

Rafael clutched his shears, his knuckles white. He looked at the shadows, then down at his hands, where the amber light began to glow with a steady, pulsing intensity. "Let's see what you bring back," he whispered, his fear momentarily eclipsed by the strange, intoxicating hum of the System.

The hunt had begun.

The Vanguard soldiers had retreated, cowed by the sheer force of the feedback loop Rafael had triggered. Elena leaned against the wall, chest heaving, clutching Sarah, while Kirill stood over the door frame, his sword still humming with residual energy."They won’t stay back for long," Elena said, her voice shaking as she gestured toward the hallway. "That was just a scouting party. Silas is going to come back with the heavy hitters next time."Rafael sank to the floor, his head spinning. The "buff" he had just forced into the room had drained him of every ounce of energy. He looked up at Elena, who was staring at the cooling body of the massive beast they’d slain in the basement."That thing," Rafael said, his voice raspy. "You saw how it moved. It wasn’t just aggressive. It was… tactical. It was waiting for us."Elena nodded, her expression grim. "It’s worse than y

The flare gun in Elena’s hand didn't waver, but her eyes flickered toward the massive, cooling corpse of the behemoth in the hallway. She looked back at them, her expression unreadable."You two are either suicidal or you have the luck of the devil," Elena said, her voice cutting through the hum of the communications equipment. "That thing has been hunting in the sub-basement for three days. It wiped out an entire extraction team yesterday."Kirill exhaled, his frame finally sagging as the adrenaline began to bleed away. He didn't lower his sword, but he pointed it toward the floor. "We aren't suicidal. We’re just hungry. And we’re tired of running."Elena finally lowered the flare gun, though she kept it gripped tight. She took a half-step back, revealing the cluttered desk behind her. "I’m Elena. I’ve been monitoring the comms since the blackout started. You’re the 'Chef' and the 'Blade,' aren't you? The ones the Collective is hunting?"Rafael wiped a streak of oily sweat from his f

Chapter 8: Basement ChefThe shutter slammed into the concrete with a final, echoing boom, sealing them in the dark. The basement air was thick, tasting of coolant, rust, and the metallic tang of something much, much larger than a rat."Are you serious?" Rafael whispered, his voice cracking. "That’s a sealed exit. We’re in a coffin."Kirill stood between Rafael and the heavy, rhythmic thudding echoing from the shadows. His shoulders were bunched, his grip on his sword so tight the leather wrap creaked. "It’s not a coffin, kid. It’s an oven. And we’re the ones deciding the temperature.""An oven? We’re about to be the main course!" Rafael backed away, his boots sliding on the oil-slicked floor. "That thing—whatever it is—is the size of a transit bus. I saw the silhouette. My shears aren't going to do anything but give it a pedicure.""Then stop looking at the monster and look at the room," Kirill snapped, his eyes never leaving the darkness. "We’re in the sub-basement. The storage closet was silent, save for the rhythmic metallic scraping of Rafael sharpening his shears against a piece of scavenged rebar. The "buff zone" he had created was still holding, the air feeling thick and charged with a low-frequency hum that made the hair on his arms stand up.Kirill sat across from him, staring at an empty, crinkled wrapper that had once held a high-grade energy bar. He crumpled it into a ball and tossed it into the pile of useless trash."That's the last of the good stuff, isn't it?" Kirill asked, his voice rough.Rafael sighed, setting his shears down. "Yeah. Everything else in the bag is just base-level junk. It’s not going to keep you running at peak efficiency for long."Kirill looked up, his jaw set in a hard line. "I can feel the lag setting in already. My stamina's not refilling as fast as it was an hour ago. If we don't get fresh, high-density ingredients, we're going to be sitting ducks when that collective comes back.""I know," Rafael replied,

He shoved the glowing remains of the Siphon into his bag and smoothed his hoodie, trying to look like a background character, a nobody, a sidekick.Kirill kicked the bolt back and threw the door open.Standing in the hallway was a man who looked like he had walked off the cover of a luxury magazine—if the magazine were dedicated to tactical gear and apocalypse-chic. The cafeteria doors groaned on rusted hinges as they pushed inside, the air within smelling of stale grease and long-dried despair. They didn't stop for food. They didn't stop to scavenge the overturned tables. Kirill, moving with the gait of a man who had pushed his body past its absolute limit, led the way through the back service entrance, bypassing the main floor to reach the small, reinforced storage closet he’d been using as a makeshift bunker.Once the door was locked and bolted, the silence felt heavy, pressing against their eardrums. Rafael slumped against a stack of crates, his hands trembling as he pulled the Essence Siphon from his bag. It was still glowing, a rhythmic, pulsing light that seemed to dim and brighten in time with his own heartbeat."So," Kirill said, his chest heaving as he dropped his blade to the floor with a metallic clatter. "That’s the prize. You have any idea what it actually does, or are we just staring at it like it’s a Christmas light?"Rafael wiped
