The storage closet was silent, save for the rhythmic metallic scraping of Rafael sharpening his shears against a piece of scavenged rebar. The "buff zone" he had created was still holding, the air feeling thick and charged with a low-frequency hum that made the hair on his arms stand up.

Kirill sat across from him, staring at an empty, crinkled wrapper that had once held a high-grade energy bar. He crumpled it into a ball and tossed it into the pile of useless trash.

"That's the last of the good stuff, isn't it?" Kirill asked, his voice rough.

Rafael sighed, setting his shears down. "Yeah. Everything else in the bag is just base-level junk. It’s not going to keep you running at peak efficiency for long."

Kirill looked up, his jaw set in a hard line. "I can feel the lag setting in already. My stamina's not refilling as fast as it was an hour ago. If we don't get fresh, high-density ingredients, we're going to be sitting ducks when that collective comes back."

"I know," Rafael replied, picking up his bag. "I’ve checked every corner of this room. We’re tapped out."

"Then we move," Kirill said, grabbing his sword and standing up. He checked the hallway through the crack in the door before motioning for Rafael to follow. "The cafeteria was supposed to be the motherlode, but it’s mostly picked clean by the local pests. We need to head toward the labs in the basement wing. The chemical storage lockers there should have preservatives or catalysts."

Rafael stepped out into the hallway, the familiar scent of iron and decay hitting him like a physical weight. "The labs? That’s way past the gym, Kirill. You know how many of those things usually cluster in the lower levels."

"I do," Kirill said, his eyes scanning the shadows. "But we have a choice. We either starve and wait for Silas and his goons to turn us into their personal battery, or we go find the good stuff."

"Right. Death by starvation or death by monsters. What a great menu of options," Rafael muttered, keeping his voice low as they navigated the debris-strewn corridor.

Kirill chuckled, but it sounded hollow. "See? Now you're getting the hang of life in the trenches. Stay close. If you see something that looks like it’s glowing or pulsating, point it out. Don't touch it, just point."

"Understood," Rafael said, his heart hammering against his ribs.

They moved in silence for several minutes, the school’s architecture shifting from the sleek, high-ceilinged hallways of the main wing to the industrial, cramped, and damp passages near the maintenance sector. The temperature dropped significantly.

"Stop," Kirill whispered suddenly, pressing a hand against Rafael’s chest.

"What is it?" Rafael asked, his breath hitching.

"Hear that?"

Rafael strained his ears. Beneath the settling of the building, there was a wet, rhythmic clicking—like thousands of insect legs scuttling across metal.

"Rats?" Rafael asked.

"No," Kirill replied, his grip tightening on his sword. "Too heavy. And too fast. These are Crawlers. They’re smart, and they move in packs. If we get swarmed, you have to get behind that ventilation duct. Understand?"

"Got it," Rafael said, his hands already fumbling for his meager kit.

They crept around a corner and into a wide, open loading bay that led toward the service elevators. The light in the area was dying, flickering in irregular, sickly yellow pulses from a damaged strobe light on the ceiling.

"Look," Kirill pointed with his chin.

In the center of the room, scattered across the floor, were glowing, organic-looking bulbs—the same type of essence-rich flora they’d seen traces of, but far more concentrated.

"That’s it," Rafael whispered, his eyes widening. "That’s high-grade essence. If I can get that, I can make a buff that would keep you in the red for a week."

"It’s a trap," Kirill said instantly. "Look at the patterns. They’re placed in a circle. It’s bait."

"I know," Rafael said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "But if we don't take it, we’re done for anyway. Can you cover me?"

Kirill sighed, shifting into his combat stance. "You’ve got ten seconds, kid. If you aren't back in my shadow by then, I’m retreating."

Rafael didn't wait. He bolted toward the center of the loading bay, his boots echoing sharply on the concrete. He reached the first bulb, his hands glowing with that familiar amber light.

[ Material Detected: Void-Essence Spore (Rare) ]

[ Processing… ]

"Fast, Rafael!" Kirill roared.

Just as Rafael’s fingers closed around the pulsing bulb, a screech echoed from the ceiling. A dozen shadow-draped shapes—lean, segmented, and covered in jagged, metallic chitin—dropped from the shadows, skittering with terrifying speed.

"They’re here!" Rafael yelled, scrambling backward.

Kirill surged forward, his sword a blur of motion. He parried a lunge from the lead Crawler, the sound of metal meeting chitin ringing out like a bell. "Get to the wall!"

Rafael dove toward a rusted fire cabinet, his mind racing. He didn't have time to cook a proper meal, and he didn't have a burner. He looked at the Spore in his hand, then at the spicy, industrial-strength fire-suppressant canister sitting inside the cabinet.

"Kirill, give me a window!" Rafael screamed, tearing the top off the fire-suppressant canister and dumping the Spore into the nozzle.

"I’m working on it!" Kirill grunted, kicking a Crawler away before it could sink its mandibles into his leg. He swung his blade in a wide, punishing arc, catching three of the creatures at once. "Do it now!"

Rafael shook the canister violently, channeling his intent into the mixture of chemical foam and concentrated essence.

[ Skill: Culinary Enhancement ]

[ Material Detected: Void-Essence + Industrial Foam ]

[ Result: Caustic Repellent Spray ]

"Eat this!" Rafael yelled, aiming the nozzle at the encroaching pack and pulling the trigger.

A jet of searing, neon-blue foam exploded from the nozzle. The moment it hit the Crawlers, they shrieked, their chitinous shells bubbling and hissing as if touched by acid. The smell was intense—a sharp, stinging blend of hot spice and ozone.

The creatures recoiled, tumbling over one another in a frantic, screeching retreat.

Kirill didn't miss the chance. He lunged, finishing off the wounded ones with efficient, brutal strokes. In seconds, the loading bay fell silent.

Kirill stood over the last of them, his chest heaving, his sword dripping with black ichor. He turned to Rafael, who was still clutching the empty canister, his knees shaking.

"Not bad, kid," Kirill panted, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Not bad at all."

"I thought I was dead," Rafael wheezed, his heart finally slowing down. "That was… that was too close."

"Welcome to the big leagues," Kirill said, walking over and placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. "But we can't celebrate yet. This noise? It’s going to draw something much worse than a pack of scouts."

"What’s worse?" Rafael asked, looking at the dark tunnel leading toward the basement.

Kirill gestured toward the far end of the bay. A massive steel door, partially crushed, was slowly being pushed outward from the inside. A low, thunderous thud resonated through the floor, vibrating in Rafael’s teeth.

"That," Kirill said, his expression turning grave. "We need to go. Now."

They turned to run back toward the service hallway, but the exit was blocked by a sudden, descending fire shutter that slammed shut with a final, echoing clang.

They were trapped.

Kirill slammed his sword against the metal, but it barely made a scratch. From the darkness behind them, the rhythmic, heavy footsteps grew louder, accompanied by the wet sound of heavy breathing.

Rafael turned, his flashlight beam cutting through the gloom. A colossal, hulking silhouette stood at the edge of the light—a monster that made the Butcher look like a child’s toy. Its eyes glowed with a cold, malevolent intelligence.

"So," Kirill whispered, turning to face the darkness, his voice tight. "The menu just changed."

"What do we do?" Rafael asked, his voice trembling.

Kirill gripped his sword, his stance low and desperate. "We pray you have enough left in that bag to make a miracle, Rafael. Because we’re not getting out of this basement unless we take that thing down."

The flare gun in Elena’s hand didn't waver, but her eyes flickered toward the massive, cooling corpse of the behemoth in the hallway. She looked back at them, her expression unreadable."You two are either suicidal or you have the luck of the devil," Elena said, her voice cutting through the hum of the communications equipment. "That thing has been hunting in the sub-basement for three days. It wiped out an entire extraction team yesterday."Kirill exhaled, his frame finally sagging as the adrenaline began to bleed away. He didn't lower his sword, but he pointed it toward the floor. "We aren't suicidal. We’re just hungry. And we’re tired of running."Elena finally lowered the flare gun, though she kept it gripped tight. She took a half-step back, revealing the cluttered desk behind her. "I’m Elena. The basement air was thick, tasting of coolant, rust, and the metallic tang of something much, much larger than a rat."Are you serious?" Rafael whispered, his voice cracking. "That’s a sealed exit. We’re in a coffin."Kirill stood between Rafael and the heavy, rhythmic thudding echoing from the shadows. His shoulders were bunched, his grip on his sword so tight the leather wrap creaked. "It’s not a coffin, kid. It’s an oven. And we’re the ones deciding the temperature.""An oven? We’re about to be the main course!" Rafael backed away, his boots sliding on the oil-slicked floor. "That thing—whatever it is—is the size of a transit bus. I saw the silhouette. The cafeteria doors groaned on rusted hinges as they pushed inside, the air within smelling of stale grease and long-dried despair. They didn't stop for food. They didn't stop to scavenge the overturned tables. Kirill, moving with the gait of a man who had pushed his body past its absolute limit, led the way through the back service entrance, bypassing the main floor to reach the small, reinforced storage closet he’d been using as a makeshift bunker.Once the door was locked and bolted, the silence felt heavy, pressing against their eardrums. Rafael slumped against a stack of crates, his hands trembling as he pulled the Essence Siphon from his bag. It was still glowing, a rhythmic, pulsing light that seemed to dim and brighten in time with his own heartbeat."So," Kirill said, his chest heaving as he dropped his blade to the floor with a metallic clatter. "That’s the prize. You have any idea what it actually does, or are we just staring at it like it’s a Christmas light?"Rafael wiped
