The air outside the dungeon was sickeningly sweet. It was the smell of fresh rain and city smog, a stark contrast to the scent of ozone and rotting flesh that had filled Lucian’s lungs for the last three hours.

Thud.

Lucian dropped Miller’s limp body onto the pavement of the empty alleyway. Behind him, Sarah collapsed to her knees, her breath coming in jagged, hysterical hitches. They had emerged through a secondary exit, miles away from the main dungeon entrance where the press and the Association guards were likely waiting.

"You... you’re really going to let us live?" Sarah whispered, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief.

Lucian didn't look back. He was staring at his own hands. They were clean—not a speck of monster blood remained. The System had processed every drop of "waste" into pure energy.

"Living is a generous word for what Miller has left," Lucian said, his voice flat. "He’s a Rank-D Swordsman who can’t hold a spoon anymore. His mana circuits are fried. To the Association, he’s exactly what he called me: a broken tool."

"Lucian, please... if the Guild finds out—"

"If the Guild finds out, tell them the truth," Lucian interrupted, finally turning to look at her. His golden eyes had faded back to a dark brown, but the intensity remained. "Tell them a scavenger survived. Tell them the Abyss has a new owner. But if you mention the System... if you mention how Borris really died..."

He leaned in, his shadow looming over her.

"I’ll come for the rest of you. And I promise, I won't leave enough of you behind to bury."

Sarah flinched, nodding frantically. She scrambled to grab Miller’s unconscious form, dragging him toward the main street where the sirens of the Hunter Association were finally wailing.

Lucian watched them go. He didn't feel the "heroic" satisfaction of saving a teammate. He felt the cold, calculating hunger of a predator.

[Ding! Hidden Quest Complete: The Sole Survivor.] [Reward: 2,000 Exp, +10 Intelligence, 1x Scavenger’s Cloak (Rank D - Stealth Grade).]

[Level Up! Level 15 -> Level 16]

"A cloak?" Lucian muttered.

A mass of dark, tattered fabric materialized in his hand. It looked like something pulled from a dumpster—gray, frayed, and unremarkable. But as soon as Lucian draped it over his shoulders, he felt a strange sensation. The light around him seemed to bend. His presence, his very heartbeat, felt muffled.

[Item: Scavenger’s Cloak] [Effect: Reduces Presence by 70% in urban environments. Passively collects 'Ambient Mana' from the surroundings.]

"Perfect for a nobody," Lucian smiled.

He walked out of the alley, merging into the crowd of civilians who were panicking about the "Dungeon Outbreak" rumors. To them, he was just another dirty, shell-shocked scavenger who had barely escaped with his life. No one looked at him twice. No one realized that the most dangerous entity in the city was currently walking past a noodle stand.

Lucian headed toward his "home"—a cramped, one-room basement apartment in the slums of Sector 4. The walls were damp, and the air smelled of mildew. For two years, this had been his sanctuary. Now, it felt like a cage.

He sat on the edge of his creaky bed and summoned the System interface.

"System, show me the 'Synthesis' tab. I have a Rank C+ core. What can I do with it?"

[Processing...] [Warning: Host's current 'Synthesis' level is too low to fully process an Abyssal Sentinel Core.] [Current Success Rate: 12%. Failure will result in the permanent loss of the item.]

Lucian frowned. "12% is a loser's gamble. How do I increase it?"

[Answer: Higher Intelligence and 'Technical Scavenging' experience are required. Alternatively, Host can 'Decompose' the core into 'Raw Essence' to upgrade existing gear.]

"Decompose it," Lucian decided. "I need strength now, not a trophy for later."

[Decomposition Successful!] [Gained: 5,000x High-Grade Mana Shards.] [Gained: 1x Soul Fragment of the Sentinel.]

"Now, synthesize the 'Soul Fragment' with my dagger, 'Earth-Shaker’s Obsidian Dirk'."

[Synthesis Initiating... 100% Success Rate (Soul Binding).] [Evolution Complete!] [Gained: 'The Harvester’s Fang' (Rank C - Cursed Blade).] [Skill: 'Soul Devour' (Active) - Killing an enemy now grants a temporary 50% boost to all stats for 60 seconds.]

Lucian gripped the hilt. The dagger had changed again. It was longer now, curved like a predator's claw, with a pulsing red vein running through the center of the obsidian blade. It felt alive. It felt hungry.

Suddenly, a loud banging erupted at his door.

Bam! Bam! Bam!

"Lucian! You in there? Open up, you little rat! I know you’re back!"

Lucian’s eyes narrowed. He recognized that voice. It was Silas, a low-level debt collector for the 'Black Viper' gang. Lucian had taken a loan a year ago to pay for his sister’s medical bills—bills that the Blue Falcon guild had promised to cover but never did.

He stood up, the Scavenger’s Cloak fluttering around him. He didn't even hide the dagger; he simply tucked it into the sheath behind his back.

He opened the door.

Silas was a big man, Rank-E at best, but he carried himself like a king in these slums. Two thugs stood behind him, cracking their knuckles.

"Well, well. Look who survived the dungeon," Silas sneered, blowing cigarette smoke into Lucian’s face. "I heard Blue Falcon had a rough time. Miller’s in the hospital, Borris is missing. I figured you’d be dead too, which would be a real shame because you still owe us 50,000 credits."

Lucian stood motionless. He didn't flinch at the smoke. He didn't tremble.

"I don't have it," Lucian said quietly.

"Oh, I know you don't. Scavengers never do," Silas stepped into the room, kicking aside a pile of Lucian’s old clothes. "But I heard you came out with a big bag. Miller’s girl said you were the last one near the Boss room. Hand over the loot, and maybe I’ll only break one of your arms today."

One of the thugs reached out to grab Lucian’s collar.

In the past, Lucian would have begged. He would have knelt.

But today, his 'Sense of the Scavenger' was screaming at him. He saw Silas not as a man, but as a collection of weak points. The jugular. The kneecap. The solar plexus.

[Ding! Target 'Silas' detected.] [Condition: Hostile.] [Would you like to initiate 'Scavenger’s Domain'?]

"No," Lucian whispered. "That’s overkill for trash like this."

Lucian moved.

It wasn't a Hunter’s skill. It was pure, raw speed. He caught the thug’s wrist and twisted.

CRACK.

The sound of the bone snapping was like a dry twig. The thug didn't even have time to scream before Lucian’s knee connected with his chin, sending him flying backward into the hallway.

"What the—?!" Silas reached for his combat knife, but Lucian was already there.

Lucian’s hand clamped onto Silas’s face, slamming his head against the doorframe.

Thud.

Silas’s eyes rolled back. The cigarette fell from his mouth.

"50,000 credits?" Lucian asked, his voice a low, terrifying hum. He pulled Silas close, their faces inches apart. "How about I pay you in 'waste' instead?"

"Wait... Lucian... stop... what are you—?!"

Lucian’s hand began to glow with a dark, hungry light.

[Extraction Initiating...] [Gained: 5x Strength Stat Points from target 'Silas'.] [Gained: 2x Agility Stat Points from target 'Silas'.]

Silas shriveled. It wasn't death, but it was worse. He felt his very vitality, the muscles he had built over years of bullying, being drained away by the boy he had once kicked for fun.

Lucian tossed the weakened Silas onto the floor like a used tissue.

"The debt is settled," Lucian said, looking down at the three men groaning in the hall. "If I see you again, I won't just take your stats. I'll recycle your souls."

Silas scrambled away, crawling on all fours, his thugs following in a blind panic.

Lucian closed the door and locked it. He wasn't breathing hard. His heart rate was steady. He looked at his hand, feeling the stolen strength coursing through him.

[Ding! Intelligence has reached 30.] [New Feature Unlocked: 'Marketplace of the Abyss'.] [You can now trade recycled essence for skills and items from other worlds.]

Lucian sat back down on his bed. The city was full of hunters, gangs, and guilds. Thousands of "predators" who thought they were at the top of the food chain.

"Marketplace of other worlds, huh?" Lucian whispered to the empty room. "Looks like I’m going to need a lot more trash."

He looked at the small window of his basement, where the neon lights of the skyscrapers flickered in the distance.

"Tomorrow, I’m going back to the Hunter Association," he decided. "But not as a scavenger. It’s time I got my own license."
