My fingers slipped on her wet skin, and for a terrifying second, I thought I was going to lose her to the dark void below.
"Don't let go, Kofi!" Aminata shouted.
Her voice cut through the roaring storm of white static and falling letters. I dug my boots hard into a tilting slab of metal, planted my feet, and pulled upward with every last bit of strength in my arms. With a sharp grunt, I hauled her over the edge and pulled her down flat onto the tilting floor beside me.
We both lay there for a moment, panting heavily, as the world around us continued to break apart into swirling pieces of white paper.
"That was too close," I managed to say, wiping sweat from my forehead.
"We aren't safe yet," Aminata said, quickly pushing herself up to her feet. She looked around at the chaos consuming the server room. The walls, the screens, and the towering machinery were completely gone now, replaced by a blinding white vortex that spun in every direction. "The system is erasing the entire level because you destroyed the Editor."
"Good," I said, getting up beside her and clenching my right hand into a fist. The dark cosmic ink still lingered just beneath my skin, warm and heavy. "I am tired of running from a script I didn't write."
"You don't understand how big this place is, Kofi," Aminata said, her voice turning sharp and serious as she grabbed my arm to keep her balance. "The Editor was just a low-level worker. There are higher levels above this one. Whole departments filled with people who write the plots, control the characters, and decide who lives and who dies for the entertainment of readers in the real world."
I stared at her, the reality of her words sinking in fast. "So Sector 4 wasn't the only trap?"
"No," Aminata answered, shaking her head. "There are thousands of sectors. Billionaire romances, mafia wars, dark academies, apocalyptic survival games, we are all just characters trapped inside stories, forced to play the same roles over and over again until our books get canceled."
A sudden surge of anger rushed through my chest. All those years of running, fighting, and dying in the dirt of Sector 4 weren't even real struggles. They were just plot points designed to keep people turning virtual pages.
"Then we tear down every single sector," I said firmly.
Before Aminata could reply, a loud sound cracked through the white vortex above us, like thunder splitting open the sky.
The spinning white pages parted instantly, forming a massive tear in the middle of the void. Through the opening, a completely different landscape spilled down into our space. The air suddenly turned thick with the smell of sulfur and rain, and the flashing neon lights of Sector 4 bled back into the edges of the white room.
Except it wasn't empty anymore.
Standing right at the edge of the newly formed tear was a massive figure blockading our path. Heavy metal plating lined his chest, and his chrome knuckles clicked together with a familiar, mechanical sound.
Chibuzo.
I stopped dead in my tracks, my muscles tensing up. "I thought I knocked him out back in the server room."
"You can't permanently knock out a core enforcer," Aminata said, reaching quickly into her tactical jacket, only to find her crystal gun completely gone, dissolved into white static during the fall. "His character file just reloaded from the backup server."
Chibuzo cracked his massive neck, his eyes fixed entirely on us. The bruises from our last fight were completely gone, and his cybernetic frame hummed with dangerous energy.
"End of the line, kids," Chibuzo said, his deep voice echoing across the empty white space. "The higher-ups just pushed a new patch. Your file has been marked for total deletion. No more resets. No more loops."
He took a heavy step forward, the floor shaking beneath his boots.
I looked at Aminata, then down at my glowing right hand. The dark ink swirled beneath my skin, ready to strike.
"Stay back," I told her, stepping out in front.
"Don't be an idiot, Kofi," Aminata snapped, her voice carrying a rare edge of panic. "You can't fight a core enforcer bare-handed without the server backing you up. He will crush you!"
"Then I will break him again," I replied.
I lunged forward, throwing myself right at the giant enforcer before he could take another step. Chibuzo swung a massive chrome fist straight at my head, moving with blinding speed. I ducked low at the last second, letting the punch miss my ear by a fraction of an inch, and slammed my palm directly into his chest plate.
A bolt of dark cosmic ink shot from my hand, slamming into Chibuzo with a deafening blast.
The giant enforcer gasped as the shockwave lifted him off his feet, throwing him hard against a floating wall of text. But instead of falling down unconscious like before, Chibuzo let out a deep, mechanical roar and grabbed my shoulders with both hands.
His metal fingers dug deep into my flesh, sharp and agonizingly painful.
"Got you," Chibuzo growled, raising me into the air and preparing to hurl me down into the endless white void below.
"Kofi!" Aminata screamed.
She didn't hesitate. Even without a weapon, she charged forward, leaping onto Chibuzo's back and slamming her elbow hard against the joint of his cybernetic neck. The enforcer grunted in surprise, his grip loosening just enough for me to twist free.
We both tumbled backward onto the floor, gasping for air.
Chibuzo shook his head, turning his glowing red optics back toward us with pure fury. He raised his fists, ready to finish us off for good.
Suddenly, the sky above us tore open even wider.
A sharp, deafening alarm wailed through the space, and a bright blue light flashed across the entire white void. A massive digital window dropped down from the ceiling right in front of us, displaying giant red letters that blinked furiously.
SYSTEM WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED EDIT DETECTED IN SECTOR ZERO.
Chibuzo froze, lowering his fists as he stared up at the warning screen.
Aminata pulled me up to my feet, her eyes wide as she read the flashing text. "Kofi... look at the sector number. That's not our department."
"What does that mean?" I asked, panting.
"It means we aren't the only ones breaking out," Aminata said, her face turning pale.
Before Chibuzo could move again, the floor beneath his feet cracked wide open, swallowed by a sudden wave of dark, dripping ink that poured out from the flashing system warning. The giant enforcer let out a loud shout as he sank down into the floor, pulled away by an unseen force before he could touch us again.
Silence rushed back into the room, heavier than before.
The blue warning window shifted, fading away to reveal a single line of text floating alone in the middle of the empty white space.
WELCOME TO THE REAL AUTHOR'S ROOM.
I stared at the words, my heart hammering against my ribs.
Then, the floor directly beneath our boots dissolved completely. We didn't fall into an abyss this time. We dropped straight down through a ceiling of glass, landing hard on a cold, polished wooden floor inside a massive, dimly lit office filled with towering bookshelves, stacked manuscripts, and a single large desk facing away from us.
A chair behind the desk slowly turned around.
Sitting in the chair was an old man wearing a sharp black suit, holding a silver pen in his hand. He looked at us with a cold, knowing smile, and resting on the corner of his desk was a glowing, half-finished book titled with my exact name: Kofi Vance.
"Welcome, creations," the old man said softly, tapping the silver pen against the wood. "I have been waiting for you to read your own death sentence."

The Final Choice
The blinding wave of golden light crashed over us like a tidal wave, tearing through the white chamber and ripping the countdown timer into tiny, harmless shreds.I hit the floor hard, sliding across smooth glass before scrambling back up to my feet. My breath came fast and heavy, the silver pen gripped so tight in my hand that my knuckles had turned completely white."Kofi!" Aminata called out, rushing over with her crystal gun still firmly in hand. "Look at the screen."I followed her gaze up toward the massive sky above the chamber. The red warning alarms had vanished entirely. The terrifying purge countdown was gone, replaced by a clean, brilliant blue sky that stretched out endlessly across the digital horizon. Millions of floating story islands drifted peacefully i
The Last Page
The golden words on the page dissolved into a dark, bleeding red, forming a new sentence that made my stomach drop.THE CONTRACT IS VALID, BUT THE STORY DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU.I gripped the silver pen tight, staring at the book as the white chamber began to tremble. Aminata stepped up beside me, her crystal gun raised and locked on the blank space above the altar."What does that mean, Kofi?" Aminata asked, her voice calm even as the floor beneath us started to fracture. "We deleted the copy. We secured the system update."Before I could answer, the air above the massive book tore wide open.A pair of hands reached through the tear, pulling the digital fabric apart to reveal a figure stepping out of the shadows. It was not a
The Final Rewrite
The digital void rushed past us with a terrifying roar, pulling Aminata and me downward through endless layers of flashing text and broken server code.I clutched the silver pen tight in my palm, watching the dark cosmic ink pulse rapidly against my skin as the wind tore at my jacket. Beside me, Aminata twisted through the rushing air with absolute grace, her eyes locked on a solid ledge of light forming several meters below."Catch my hand!" Aminata called out, her voice cutting cleanly through the noise.I reached out blindly, my fingers wrapping around her cold grip just as she fired her crystal gun straight down into the glowing ledge. The bright beam of energy hit the surface like a anchor hook, swinging us hard to the side and slamming us onto the smooth glass platform with a heavy thud.
The True Owner
The golden contract window flashed a blinding crimson red, and the word UNRESTRICTED burned away into ash right before our eyes.I froze, the silver pen heavy in my hand as the platform beneath our feet began to vibrate violently. The blue sky above Sector Prime turned pitch black in a single second, replaced by millions of jagged red lines of computer code that wrapped around the floating islands like giant spider webs."What is happening?" Marcus shouted over the rising roar of the wind, grabbing his rifle as the glass platform cracked beneath his boots."The system didn't belong to the board, and it didn't belong to Sterling or the Chief Editor," Director Jade said, his face draining of all color as he stared up at the crimson sky. "They were just local managers renting server space. Someone else built the core d
The Final Contract
The bottomless drop ended in a flash of blinding white light, and I slammed hard onto a smooth glass platform that hovered in the middle of an endless sky.I coughed, gripping the silver pen in one hand and the glowing white feather in the other. Beside me, Aminata and Marcus rolled onto the glass, gasping for air, while Director Jade landed neatly on his feet like he owned the place."Where is she?" Marcus asked, raising his rifle and scanning the empty horizon around us."She's still in the core system," Jade answered, brushing a speck of dust off his immaculate suit jacket. "The Chief Editor cannot delete us here. This is the raw publishing draft level, the place where every contract on the platform is born before it gets locked behind paywalls and coin walls."Before
The Source Room
The golden portal spat us out onto a freezing steel floor, and my breath fogged up the air instantly.I scrambled up, coughing from the sudden cold, and gripped the silver pen tight in my hand. The dark cosmic ink pulsed against my skin, warm and steady. Beside me, Marcus groaned, dragging himself out of a heap of discarded digital wires, while Aminata was already on her feet, her crystal gun raised and sweeping the perimeter."Where are we now?" Marcus asked, rubbing his shoulder as he looked around the room. There were no glowing libraries or glass towers here. We were standing inside a massive, circular vault built of thick, black iron plates. Giant cables hung from the ceiling like thick black snakes, pumping blue light into the floor. In the very center of the room sat a single, raised stone altar holding an op
