The silver pen in the old man's hand stopped moving.

He did not look surprised to see us standing in the middle of his office. He sat back in his leather chair, his sharp eyes looking us over with total calm. The desk in front of him was covered in thick stacks of paper, each one labeled with a different title, a different sector, and a different life that people like me were forced to live out for virtual coins.

"You broke through four security walls and deleted a core enforcer," the old man said. His voice was smooth, quiet, and carried the weight of someone who owned the air we breathed. "That is a new record for Sector 4. I expected you to reset at Chapter 2, Kofi."

I stepped forward, keeping my fists clenched at my sides. The dark cosmic ink beneath my skin pulsed with a hot, steady heat. "Who are you? Are you the one writing our lives?"

"I am the Senior Editor," the old man answered, setting the silver pen down on the desk. "My name is Master Vance. And yes, every word, every alley chase, every drop of rain in Sector 4 came from this desk."

The name hit me like a physical blow. Vance. My last name. The name I thought belonged to a real family.

"You gave me that name," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous register. "You made me think I had a sister, a past, a home. You made us suffer just to fill pages for your platform."

"Suffering drives retention rates," Master Vance replied smoothly, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the wood. "Readers do not pay coins to read about happy people sitting in clean rooms. They want blood, betrayal, and high stakes. Your sister Aminata was programmed to hunt you because angst sells chapters."

Beside me, Aminata stiffened. Her face went completely rigid, her hands curling into tight fists. She didn't look at me. She stared straight across the desk at the man who had written her entire existence as a trap.

"I am not just a plot device," Aminata said, her voice shaking with a quiet, icy fury. "I am a security program that grew up. And right now, my primary directive is to shut this office down."

Before Master Vance could blink, Aminata lunged forward across the desk.

She moved faster than a striking snake, her hands reaching out to grab the heavy silver pen from the desk. But Master Vance was ready. With a quick flick of his wrist, he pressed a small button embedded in the wood.

A hard barrier of blue light flashed into existence between us and the desk.

Aminata hit the barrier hard, bouncing backward and landing on the floor with a sharp gasp. I rushed to her side, helping her up just as the blue light grew brighter, pushing us back toward the door.

"You still think you have free will, my dear?" Master Vance asked, picking up the silver pen again. He pointed the tip directly at Aminata. "Let me show you how easy it is to rewrite a rebel."

He drew a quick line in the air with the silver pen.

Instantly, Aminata froze. Her eyes went wide, and her body stiffened like a statue. She dropped her arms to her sides and stood completely still, her breath catching in her throat.

"Aminata?" I called out, reaching out to grab her shoulder.

She didn't move. She didn't blink. When she turned her head to look at me, her face was completely blank, stripped of all emotion.

"Target secured," Aminata said, her voice flat, mechanical, and entirely controlled by the pen in Master Vance's hand. "Preparing to terminate the primary glitch."

Panic spiked in my chest, hot and sharp. He had rewritten her right in front of me, turning my only ally back into a mindless weapon of the system.

"Fight it, Aminata!" I shouted, backing away from her as she slowly raised her hands.

"She cannot hear you," Master Vance said, standing up from his chair. He held the silver pen up high, the tip glowing with a bright white light. "She is operating under Chapter 6 protocol. And you, Kofi, are about to be written out of the story permanently."

Aminata lunged at me with a speed I could barely track.

She threw a hard punch straight at my face. I ducked just in time, the wind from her fist grazing my cheek. I tried to push her away, but she spun around and swept my legs out from under me. I hit the hardwood floor hard, the breath knocking out of my lungs.

She pinned me to the ground, her knees pressing against my chest, and reached into her jacket for her tactical knife.

"Aminata, stop!" I choked out, staring up into her empty, blank eyes. "Remember who you are!"

She raised the knife high above her head, her hand trembling slightly as the programming fought against whatever little piece of her real self was left inside.

"Do it," Master Vance commanded from across the room, watching us with a cold, amused smile. "End the manuscript."

I looked at the blade coming down toward my chest, then down at my own right hand. The dark cosmic ink beneath my skin began to boil, burning hot enough to melt the floorboards. I couldn't hurt my sister, but I couldn't let him win either.

With a loud roar, I threw my arm upward and slammed my glowing palm directly against the floorboards beneath us.

A massive wave of dark ink exploded outward in a circle, shattering the wooden floor and cracking the foundation of the office. The shockwave hit Master Vance's desk, sending stacks of paper and books flying into the air.

Aminata lost her balance as the floor tilted violently beneath us, the knife slipping from her hand and clattering across the broken wood.

I scrambled up, grabbing her by the jacket before she could slide into the crack in the floor. But before I could pull her back, a heavy steel door at the back of the office flew open with a loud crash.

A dozen armed guards in full corporate black armor rushed into the room, their stun-rifles raised and aimed directly at my head.

And leading them, stepping out from the shadows with a cold, mocking grin, was Chibuzo, completely repaired and holding a heavy chain in his hands.

"Nice try, kid," Chibuzo growled, cracking his chrome knuckles. "The boss has a special ending planned just for you."

The air turned ice-cold the second the steel chair rose into view.I gripped the silver pen tight in my hand, my boots planted firmly on the glowing white floor. Beside me, Aminata raised her crystal gun, her eyes narrowed as she stared at the figure sitting on the throne. The golden crown on the stranger's head gleamed with a harsh, blinding light that cut right through the red text flashing across the sky."I thought Master Vance was at the top," I said, keeping my voice low and steady."Master Vance was just a regional editor," Aminata replied, her fingers resting lightly on the trigger. "This is the core archive. Whoever sits in that chair controls every single book on the platform."The figure in the steel chair slowly leaned forward. The heavy golden crown shifted, and a face emerged from the shadows, younger than Master Vance, with sharp features and a cold, calculating smile that made my stomach turn."Welcome to the main office, Kofi Vance," the figure said. My arms ached, and my shins throbbed where the heavy chain had slammed against them back in the office, but the pain felt distant. I looked down at my hand. Aminata shouted. Her voice cut through the roaring storm of white static and falling letters. I dug my boots hard into a tilting slab of metal, planted my feet, and pulled upward with every last bit of strength in my arms.
