"...Do not trust the angels..."

The cold, whispering voice faded into nothingness, leaving behind a chilling silence that seemed to freeze the very air in the temple.

"Wait, what?" Zyren gasped, his fingers twitching. "Who said that? Hey! Speak to me!"

"Zyren? What are you talking about?" Lyra asked, her brow furrowing as she stared at his hand. "Who are you talking to? And where did that red crystal go? Did it... did it just melt into your skin?"

"It did, and it feels like I just swallowed a bucket of active volcano ash!" Zyren roared, his knees instantly giving out. He collapsed onto the cold obsidian steps of the altar, clutching his chest as a wave of agonizing heat ripped through his body. "Ah! Damn it! It burns! It literally burns!"

"Oh my god! Zyren!" Lyra squealed, throwing herself down next to him on the steps. She grabbed his shoulders, but instantly yanked her hands back with a sharp gasp. "Holy shit! You’re scorching! Seriously, you’re literally smoking! Is this... is this some kind of high-level elemental breakthrough? Are you integrating the divine authority of the shard?"

"Sure, let’s go with that!" Zyren wheezed, his teeth grinding together so hard he thought they might shatter. Internally, his mind was screaming in pure, unadulterated panic. No, you idiot! I’m a level-one fraud whose human body is trying to reject a god-tier item! Help me! "Just... get me some water! Or a fire extinguisher! Anything!"

"We don’t have fire extinguishers in a fantasy tutorial, you dummy!" Lyra cried, her panic mixing with a strange, dizzying awe. She hovered over him, her emerald eyes wide. "Wait. If your body is trying to integrate a divine core, standard physical cooling won't do anything. The heat is coming from your mana pathways. If it boils over, your soul will literally melt!"

"My soul? I like my soul!" Zyren choked out, his vision flashing with violent streaks of gold. "It’s where I keep all my memories and my incredibly handsome face! Do something, Lyra!"

"Okay, okay, don't panic! Let me think!" Lyra muttered, pacing frantically for a split second before snapping her fingers. "I have ice-aspected mana. I can act as a heat sink. But I can't just cast a standard spell. If my external magic clashes with your raw divine aura, we’ll both get vaporized!"

"Then what do we do?" Zyren gasped, his skin turning a deep, feverish red. "I'm literally cooking from the inside out here!"

"Skin-to-skin contact," Lyra said, her cheeks suddenly turning a bright, lovely crimson that rivaled his fever. "I have to circulate my ice mana directly through your meridian points. Which means... well..."

"Which means what, Lyra? Speak faster, I'm sweating bullets!"

"It means we need to get close. Extremely close. Uncomfortably close," she whispered, her voice dropping into a husky, breathless register as her eyes darkened with a sudden, intense heat of their own. "Or... maybe very comfortably close. You'll have to let me in, Master."

"Just do it!" Zyren barked, though his voice cracked under the physical strain. "I don't care what you have to do, just stop the burning!"

"Don't blame me if this gets a little too intense for you," Lyra murmured.

She quickly unbuckled her dark leather summoner harness, letting the heavy straps clatter to the stone floor. Underneath, she wore a delicate, silk-like camisole that did absolutely nothing to hide the rapid, heavy rise and fall of her chest.

"Don't look at me like that," she whispered, though her lips curved into a nervous, excited smile. "You're the one who's on fire."

"I'm trying... very hard... not to die," Zyren managed to say, his eyes tracking her bare, pale shoulders as she moved.

With a slow, deliberate movement, Lyra climbed over him, straddling his waist as he lay flat on the obsidian steps. The moment her thighs pressed against his, Zyren let out a sharp, ragged gasp. Her skin was incredibly cool, like fresh mountain snow, providing a shocking, delicious contrast to the raging inferno inside his chest.

"Oh, wow," Lyra whispered, her breath hitching as she placed her hands flat against his chest, sliding them slowly under his collar. "You are incredibly hot. Literally and figuratively."

"Are you flirting... while my organs are cooking?" Zyren wheezed, his hands instinctively wrapping around her soft waist to steady himself against the wave of pleasure-pain.

"Maybe a little," she teased, leaning down until her face was inches from his. "Now, shut up and breathe. I'm going to initiate the mana transfer."

She closed her eyes, and a soft, pale-blue light began to pulse beneath her skin. She slowly dragged her cold fingers down his chest, tracing the lines of his collarbone before sliding her hands lower, sending a freezing, soothing wave of energy directly into his burning veins.

"Ah," Zyren gasped, his back arching off the stone steps. "That's... oh god, Lyra..."

"Shh, stay still," Lyra murmured, her own breath catching in her throat. Her emerald eyes locked onto his lips. "It's working. Your core is drawing in my ice mana. But... it's pulling me in, too. It feels... so heavy. So powerful. I can feel your heart beating, Zyren. It's so fast. Are you scared?"

"That's because... you're practically naked... on top of me," Zyren muttered, his voice dropping into a deep, gravelly tone. The physical proximity, combined with the magical link, was creating a dizzying, carnal tension between them that made him forget all about his level-one stats.

"Do you want me to stop?" she whispered, her lips brushing against his cheek as she spoke, her soft chest pressing firmly against his.

"No," Zyren growled, his hand tightening around her hip, pulling her down even closer. "Don't you dare stop."

"I knew you liked me, Master," she whispered, a soft, satisfied whimper escaping her lips. "Your body doesn't lie."

"I'm just utilizing my resources," Zyren lied, his heart hammering like a tribal drum as her cold fingers slid down his stomach, sending electric shocks of pure, unadulterated pleasure through his entire nervous system.

"Then let me resource you some more," she whispered.

And then, she kissed him.

The moment their lips met, a literal spark of magical energy erupted between them. A brilliant, swirling vortex of gold and blue light enveloped them, his scorching divine heat and her freezing ice mana swirling together in perfect, chaotic harmony.

"Mmh," Lyra groaned into the kiss, her fingers tangling in his dark hair as she pulled him closer, kissing him with a desperate, hungry passion.

Zyren lost all track of his lies, his fears, and his secrets. He kissed her back with a fierce, possessive intensity, his tongue tangling with hers as the soothing, icy sensation of her mana finally stabilized the raging fire in his chest. The pain was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, throbbing pleasure that made his head spin.

They finally broke apart, panting for air, a thin silver thread of saliva connecting their lips in the dim purple light of the temple.

"Wow," Lyra breathed, her eyes completely dilated, her face flushed a deep, beautiful pink. "That was... that was definitely not a standard breakthrough."

"No," Zyren agreed, his voice thick with desire as he stared up at her gorgeous, flushed face. "That was... highly efficient."

"Efficient?" She let out a breathless, melodious laugh, playfully swatting his shoulder. "You are an absolute jerk, you know that? I literally just saved your life and you call it efficient?"

"A handsome jerk, though," Zyren pointed out, a slow, smug grin returning to his face. "And you didn't seem to mind the efficiency."

"Shut up," she giggled, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to his collarbone. "My mana is completely drained now. You owe me big time."

Before Zyren could reply, a loud, grinding sound shook the very foundations of the temple.

RUMBLE.

"Whoa! What now?" Lyra gasped, quickly scrambling off him and pulling her leather harness back over her shoulders, though her hands were shaking slightly.

Zyren sat up, rubbing his chest. The burning was completely gone, replaced by a strange, comfortable warmth that made him feel stronger, though his stats remained unchanged. "Looks like the exit is opening."

Behind the obsidian altar, the massive stone wall began to slide upward, revealing a glowing, arched gateway. Unlike the dark, gloomy portals of the tutorial cave, this one was made of shimmering white light, pulsing with a clean, welcoming energy.

"The exit gateway," Lyra said, her eyes shining with excitement. "It leads straight to Floor One's main city. We made it, Zyren! We actually cleared the hidden zone!"

"Of course we did," Zyren said, standing up and brushing the dust off his pants, trying to act like his knees weren't still trembling from the sheer intensity of the kiss. He offered her his hand, his expression cool and composed. "Shall we, assistant?"

"Only if I get that promotion we talked about," she teased, wrapping her slender fingers tightly around his. "I think 'head partner' sounds much better than assistant."

"We'll negotiate the terms of your contract later," Zyren rumbled, leading her toward the glowing light.

"Oh, please. You're already wrapped around my finger, Master," she whispered, leaning her head against his shoulder as they walked.

They stepped hand in hand into the brilliant white light of the gateway, the cold stone of the temple fading away.

"So, what's the first thing we're doing in the city?" Lyra asked as the white light enveloped them. "I'm thinking a nice, hot bath, a giant steak, and maybe we can find a room with a lock on the door..."

"Sounds like a plan," Zyren smiled.

But the moment the white light faded, the sounds of a bustling, medieval-esque city square filled their ears followed immediately by a sharp, metallic clang.

"HALT! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!" a booming, authoritative voice roared.

Zyren blinked, his eyes rapidly adjusting to the bright daylight.

They were standing in the center of a massive, circular stone plaza. But they weren't alone. A wall of towering, heavily armed soldiers in gleaming steel armor adorned with a roaring iron wolf emblem had completely surrounded the portal. They held massive halberds, heavy crossbows, and glowing magical staves, all pointed directly at Zyren and Lyra.

"By order of the Iron Vanguard Guild, this portal is under immediate lockdown!" a stern-looking man in gold-trimmed armor stepped forward, drawing a massive, glowing broadsword. "Identify yourselves immediately! We detected a massive divine energy surge from this gate. State your class and level, or be executed on the spot as unregistered anomalies!"

Lyra gasped, her grip on Zyren's hand tightening to a painful degree. "Zyren... that's the Iron Vanguard. The strongest guild on Floor One. They don't play around. What do we do?"

Zyren stared at the dozens of high-level weapons pointed directly at his chest. He took a quick, panicked glance at his interface.

Oh, you have got to be kidd

"Careless is a luxury we stopped being able to afford about three hundred miles back," Zyren said, not looking up from the embers. His voice was a low, rhythmic rasp that scraped against the silence of the hut. "You didn't show the pendant because you were careless. You showed it because you still think there’s a world left where that crest means something other than a bounty. It doesn't."Lyra’s breath hitched, a sharp, stabbing sensation blooming in her side where her ribs had been fractured during the skirmish at the border. She forced her eyes open, the dim orange glow of the dying firelight dancing painfully across her vision. "And what does it mean to you, Zyren? Or are you just avoiding the question?"Zyren stilled. The charred stick in his hand turned to ash as he squeezed it. "It means someone is going to kill us for it. That’s all the meaning it requires.""You were one of them," she pressed, her voice trembling not from the fever now, but from a sudden, sharp clarity. "I sa

"The merchant," she mumbled, her head lolling against the uneven stone floor, her eyelids fluttering with the weight of a thousand lead weights. "He knew, Zyren. He saw the seal on the pendant. He knew exactly what it was worth, and he knew exactly whose throat to cut to get it."Zyren moved away, the sharp scrape of his boots against the grit sounding like a gavel in the cramped, airless space of the shepherd’s hut. He knelt by the small, dying fire he had coaxed to life, poking at the embers with a piece of charred wood. The sparks drifted upward, dying against the cold, damp ceiling. He didn't look at her, but his shoulders were hunched, a cage of coiled muscle and hidden tension."The merchant doesn't matter," Zyren said, his voice flat, stripped of the usual caustic wit he used to keep the world at bay. "He’s a scavenger. They always look for carrion. You were just unlucky enough to be the only piece of meat on this road.""I was careless," Lyra pushed out, her voice ragged. She

  • Chapter 65: Night Fever

The world had dissolved into a disjointed mosaic of searing heat and freezing shivers. Lyra stared at the ceiling of the shepherd’s hut, but the stone rafters kept liquefying, turning into writhing gray serpents that dripped thick, viscous tar onto her skin. She tried to scream, but the sound lodged in her throat like a dry stone."Drink," a voice commanded. It wasn’t just a command, it was an anchor. Zyren’s calloused palm hooked behind her neck, lifting her head with practiced, clinical efficiency. The rim of a waterskin pressed against her cracked lips. She swallowed, the liquid tasting of stale leather and grit, but it was salvation."I can’t… I can’t breathe, Zyren," she gasped, her voice sounding thin and alien to her own ears."Breathe shallow," Zyren replied. He was hunkered over her, his silhouette blocking out the moonlight that bled through the gaps in the stone walls. "The fever is spiking again. Your ribs are angry, Lyra. Keep your core still.""The merchant," she murmure

  • Chapter 64: The Bluff

The air in the dry creek bed felt thick enough to chew, smelling of pulverized stone and the copper tang of Lyra’s own spreading fever. Zyren shifted his stance, his hand dropping to the pommel of his blade. He didn't look at her; he looked at the horizon, where a thin, shimmering ribbon of dust heralded the approach of the spice caravan."You aren't in a state to bargain, Lyra," Zyren muttered, his voice barely audible over the wind. "If they have medicine, we take it. If they have eyes, we blind them. Don't make me do both.""We aren't bandits," Lyra wheezed, forcing herself to sit upright against the jagged rock. She felt the world tilt, the shadows of the creek bank stretching like skeletal fingers. "We are travelers in distress. That is the story. If you act like a wolf, they’ll treat us like prey.""You're bleeding through your tunic," he countered, pointing at her side with a callous nod. "You look like a corpse, and I look like a man who hasn't slept in a week. 'Travelers' doe

  • Chapter 63: A Merchant’s Price

The dry creek bed offered little in the way of shade, only a deeper, suffocating stillness where the heat gathered like stagnant water. Lyra crumpled into the dirt, her back pressed against the sun-blasted rocks. Her breath came in short, jagged whistles, each one a serrated blade scraping against her broken ribs.Zyren swung down from his mount, the leather of his saddle creaking in the oppressive silence. He moved with a predatory efficiency, checking the perimeter before turning his gaze toward her. His eyes, usually cold and calculating, flickered with a brief, unmasked shadow of concern before he shuttered them away."You’re burning up," Zyren said, kneeling in the dust. He reached for her, but Lyra recoiled, her hand gripping the hilt of her knife."Don't," she hissed, though the threat lacked any real bite. She pressed her free hand to her side, feeling the damp, slick heat of an infection blooming beneath her bandages. The skin around the wound felt tight, throbbing in time wi

  • Chapter 62: The Toll of the Road

The heat, once a mere annoyance, had hardened into a physical weight. It pressed down upon the parched plains like a leaden shroud, baking the cracked earth until the very air shivered with distortion. Lyra’s breath came in shallow, stuttering gasps. Every intake of air was a negotiation with the searing, jagged pain splintered deep within her side."Stop," Lyra rasped, the word tearing at her dry throat. "Zyren, stop. I need a moment."Zyren didn't look back immediately. He rode for three more paces, his posture rigid, his hand hovering near the hilt of his blade a habit he’d developed over the last forty-eight hours of near-constant movement. He hauled his horse to a halt with a sharp, impatient jerk of the reins."We don't have 'moments', Lyra," he said, his voice stripped of all inflection. "We have miles. And right now, we’re losing the race against both the sun and the Vanguard."Lyra slid from her saddle, her legs buckling the instant they touched the sun-baked dust. She hit th
