The heavy steel blast doors of Griffin Industries' primary server vault slid open with a deep, pressurized hiss, revealing a subterranean chamber filled with rows of towering ice-blue mainframe racks.

At the center console, Marcus stood surrounded by four junior network engineers. He smoothed the lapels of his thousand-dollar tailored blazer, resting his hand casually on the master terminal, a confident smirk playing across his face as Fiona and Declan walked inside. Behind them stood two armed executive bodyguards, their hands resting on their holstered sidearms.

"Miss Griffin, thank goodness you're unharmed," Marcus said smoothly, gesturing toward the flickering monitors lining the far wall. "We received the distress call from your highway escort. Terrible business, truly. But as you can see, my team and I have the perimeter breach under control. The system latency is high, but my secondary firewall is holding."

Fiona didn't smile. She walked straight to the central glass desk, resting her palms against the edge. "Marcus, step aside. Declan Wilde is taking over the technical audit of the master terminal immediately."

Marcus froze. He looked at Declan, taking in his rain-soaked jacket, his plain civilian boots, and his quiet, unreadable face. Then, Marcus threw his head back and let out a loud, theatrical laugh that echoed off the metal walls.

"Declan Wilde?" Marcus repeated, tapping his gold tablet against his palm as he stepped around the desk. "Miss Griffin, please tell me this is a joke. I know who this guy is. He’s Nala Sawyer' stay-at-home husband! The unemployed contractor who spent three years carrying ethernet cables and wiping dust off garage servers for Sawyer Dynamics!"

The junior engineers behind Marcus stifled light chuckles, looking at Declan with open amusement.

"I have a double master's degree in Cybernetics from MIT, Miss Griffin," Marcus declared, puffing his chest out, his voice dripping with arrogance. "I built Griffin Industries' military-grade defense architecture from the ground up. I have held the top security clearance in this city for six years. And you want to hand my master console to a house-husband who got kicked out of his wife's firm for incompetence?"

"I didn't ask for your opinion, Marcus," Fiona said, her tone dropping into something dangerous.. "Step away from the console. That is an order."

"No, Miss Griffin, this is absurd!" Marcus argued, his face flushing red as he raised his hands in dramatic protest. "You are making a massive mistake! If this low-tier janitor touches our root directory, he will collapse the primary defense node! I swear on my career, if this glorified cable-boy can somehow resolve a level-five brute-force injection, a breach that my entire department couldn't trace in three hours, I will hand you my written resignation on the spot!"

Declan didn't offer a single word in self-defense. He simply walked past Marcus, pulled a black fiber-optic diagnostic lead from his inner pocket, and plugged it directly into the master bus port.

His long, calloused fingers settled over the mechanical keyboard.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.

The sound of his keystrokes echoed through the vault like a steady, relentless drumbeat. On the giant central wall display, thousands of lines of complex C++ code, kernel logs, and network routing tables began scrolling past at blinding speed.

Marcus scoffed, crossing his arms with a bitter sneer. "Look at him go. Hitting basic terminal commands to look busy. He doesn't even know where the root directory is ...."

BEEP-BEEP.

A bright crimson window popped open on the center screen, cutting Marcus off mid-sentence.

[CORE FIREWALL BREACH: NEUTRALIZED]

[SYSTEM LATENCY: 0.00 MS]

[SYSTEM LOGIC RESTORED: 100%]

[ELAPSED TIME: 01 MINUTE 42 SECONDS]

The junior engineers gasped, dropping their clipboards. Across the entire subterranean vault, the flickering red warning lights instantly shifted to a solid, glowing ice-blue. The cooling fans eased into a smooth, rhythmic hum.

Marcus’s jaw dropped open. He took two steps forward, his eyes bulging as he stared at the green system diagnostics. "What... What did he do? That... that's impossible! How did he bypass the 256-bit hash in under two minutes?!"

Declan slowly stopped typing. He leaned back in the executive chair, turning his head to look Marcus dead in the eyes.

"You said it would take your entire department three hours," Declan said, his tone utterly flat, laced with a chilling, quiet mockery. "It took ninety seconds. Should I draft that resignation letter for you, Chief Officer?"

Marcus’s face contorted in humiliation and rage. "You... you got lucky! You ran a pre-packaged patch script!"

"No, Marcus," Declan whispered, leaning forward slightly, his eyes narrowing into twin pools of dark ice. "You couldn't fix the breach in three hours because you were the one who caused it in the first place."

A heavy, suffocating silence slammed down upon the server room.

Fiona’s head snapped toward Marcus. The two armed bodyguards immediately shifted their weight, their hands tightening around their holsters.

Marcus gasped, his face draining of all color as he took an instinctual step backward. "That's a lie! That's a slanderous accusation! Miss Griffin, he's trying to frame me to cover his own illegality!"

Declan didn't argue. He reached out and struck three keys on the terminal board.

ENTER.

The giant display behind them split into two live windows. On the left side, a deep-level kernel execution log highlighted a specific line of hexadecimal code in glowing yellow. On the right side, a real-time digital paper trail traced an outgoing data packet directly from the room.

"Twenty minutes before Fiona left her office tonight," Declan explained calmly, his voice echoing in the dead silence, "someone manually opened an internal administrative port on this exact console. They bypassed the outer firewall and routed the convoy's live GPS coordinates directly to an external IP owned by Apex Holdings."

Declan pointed to the bottom of the digital authorization certificate.

[USER CERTIFICATE: M_Griffin_01]

[SECURITY KEY: MARCUS_EXECUTIVE_ROOT]

"The highway ambush wasn't a random hit," Declan said, looking at Marcus's trembling hands. "You leaked her route to the mercenaries. And you initiated the server breach from inside this room to keep her technical staff distracted while the hit squad took their shots."

Fiona turned slowly toward her Chief Information Officer, her eyes burning with pure, lethal fire. "Marcus... you sold me out?"

"No! No! It's a forge! He altered the server logs!" Marcus shrieked, his voice cracking violently as cold sweat poured down his forehead and neck. He backed away toward the side emergency door, his hands shaking out of control. "Miss Griffin, you have to listen to me! He loaded a fake certificate from his flash drive! I've been loyal to this company for five years!"

"Search him," Fiona commanded coldly, gesturing to her bodyguards.

The two heavy guards stepped forward, reaching for their cuffs.

Cornered and desperate, Marcus’s eyes went wild. He reached into his blazer pocket, pulled out a small, high-frequency flash-bang canister, and slammed it against the concrete floor.

BANG-CRASH!

A blinding flash of white light and a deafening roar erupted inside the sealed vault. The two bodyguards stumbled back, clutching their eyes and groaning in pain.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He slammed his palm against the emergency release bar, shoved open the heavy steel door, and sprinted into the dark, underground maintenance corridors of the building.

Fiona blinked away the burning white spots in her vision, drawing her sidearm, her face flushed with fury as she aimed toward the dark hallway. "Guard the main exit! Don't let him reach the parking bay!"

She stepped forward to chase him down, but Declan reached out, grabbing her arm with a firm, steady grip, stopping her in her tracks.

"Let him run," Declan said softly.

Fiona turned to him in utter shock. "Let him run?! Declan, he just tried to have me murdered on the highway! He's the traitor who compromised my entire network!"

Declan didn't raise his voice. He simply held up his black diagnostic tablet, turning the screen toward her.

A small, glowing red dot was pulsing steadily on a real-time digital map of the city streets, moving rapidly through the underground drainage tunnels toward the industrial shipping district.

"When I touched his console two minutes ago," Declan explained calmly, "I injected a silent, untraceable satellite tracker straight into his phone's background firmware. He thinks he's escaping."

A slow, chilling smile touched the corner of Declan's lips.

"Marcus is a coward," Declan added. "And when panic strikes a coward, he runs straight to the man holding his leash. Let him run. He’s going to lead us straight to the people he's working"

Fiona looked at the pulsing red dot on the screen, then raised her eyes to Declan's calm, terrifyingly brilliant face. Breathless awe washed over her once again. In a single move, he had cleared her company's system, exposed her traitor, and turned that traitor into an unwitting hunting dog.

She stepped closer, her sharp eyes looking straight into his.

"I don't care about your past, Declan. I don't care what Nala Sawyer and her family thought of you," Fiona declared, her tone filled with absolute sincerity. "I want you to become my Chief Security Advisor and Personal Assistant. Effective right now. You will have full executive clearance, access to all Griffin Industries resources, and a private budget with zero oversight."

Declan looked at her for a quiet moment. He knew that taking this official position would place him right back in the center of the corporate world. But it also gave him the perfect civilian cover allowing him to operate openly while keeping his supreme rank as Commander Wilde hidden in the shadows.

"I accept," Declan said quietly.

"Good," Fiona said, a victorious smile touching her lips as she leaned back against the edge of the glass desk. She smoothed the front of her burgundy jacket, her eyes glittering with a sudden, mischievous glint.

"Because your first official assignment starts tomorrow night," Fiona continued softly. "Brody Cromwell and Nala Sawyer are holding a massive grand opening gala at the State Convention Center. They're inviting two thousand international bankers, politicians, and media outlets to witness the Aegis Core's live launch."

Declan stood unmoving, his dark eyes fixed on her.

Fiona pulled an elegant, gold-embossed invitation card from her inner pocket, twirling it between her fingers before holding it out toward him.

"Nala personally sent me an invitation this morning”

Fiona stepped closer, placing a warm, confident hand on Declan's shoulder, looking straight into his eyes, her smile turning razor-sharp. "You're going to be my plus one.”
