TRIPPLE BLOW
“ Okay….okay… I am on my way now. I will be there very soon,” Bruce said, and without hanging up the call, he ran as fast as his legs could carry him towards the hospital.
Bruce rushed into the hospital and hurried to his mother's ward, his heart racing with anxiety.
His mother lay on the bed, her eyes sunken and her skin pale. He could see the pain and struggle in her eyes, and it broke his heart.
"Mom, I'm here," Bruce said, taking her hand in his as he kneeled beside the bed.
He could see his mother smile weakly.
"I'm going to find the money, I promise. I'll do whatever it takes to save you." Bruce said with a sad face.
His mother smiled weakly and nodded. "I know you will, Bruce. You're a good boy. But even if you can't find the money, I want you to know that I'm proud of you. You've always been a fighter, and I know you'll be fine." His mother said amidst constant pauses and deep breaths.
Bruce felt a lump form in his throat as he looked at his mother. He could see the resignation in her eyes, and it tore him apart.
"No, Mom, don't say that. I'll find the money, I promise. I'll do anything to save you," Bruce pleaded, his voice cracking with emotion.
He had only a few dollars in his savings. From him not taking any salary, he had recently gotten a job as a mailman too, and that was just a few days ago. The money he had made was nowhere near the required amount for his mother’s surgery.
His mother did not know about this job, and he felt no need to tell her since he did not want his mother to worry about him.
His mother's gaze was filled with love and compassion. "Bruce, my dear boy, it's too late. I'm tired, and I'm ready to go. But I want you to know that I love you, and I'll always be with you, no matter what.
Nevertheless, there is a big and fruitful life ahead of you. Go live life to the fullest. I am so proud of you, son..."
Bruce felt a wave of grief wash over him as his mother's eyes closed, and she took her last breath. He held her hand tightly, and he could see the pulse monitor beep loudly, and her mother gave up.
Bruce did not cry, but he was full of pain.
He maintained a strict face, but he was trembling.
He was shaking vigorously as he tried to bottle up the pain in him.
Nurses were with them all along, and there was nothing they could do.
The nurses gently tried to pry Bruce away from his mother's bedside, but he refused to let go.
But the nurses were firm, and eventually, they managed to get Bruce out of the room.
As Bruce walked out of the hospital, he felt like he was walking away from a part of himself. He had lost the one person who had always been there for him, and he didn't know how to go on without her. But he knew he had to keep moving forward, for his mother's sake and his own.
He was filled with hate for Emile.
Maybe, just Maybe if Emile had paid him, he could have saved his mother, but now it was all over.
He stood at the entrance of the hospital, wondering what he was going to do next.
Bruce was in shock as he walked out of the hospital. He had just lost his mother, and the grief was overwhelming.
He had just lost one of his jobs and was now a complete orphan.
His only hope of survival was from the mailing company.
Bruce was not in a good mood at that point. He knew it was time to go to his duty as a mailman, and he had to report to work at that time, but he did not care. After all, he had just lost his beloved mother. What more could he lose again that would be more painful than that?
Bruce made his way home, not minding his surroundings.
His phone beeped loudly, signifying an incoming call.
Bruce took the phone out hesitantly and looked at it. It was the manager of the mailing company.
“Why are you not at work now?” The manager said with a stern and deep voice.
Bruce gave a sigh. He knew the manager would always speak authoritatively so he was not bothered.
On his first day on the job, he noticed that, but he told himself he was only there to get the job done and get his money, so he ignored it and went on with taking up the job.
“Bruce heaved a sigh without knowing what to say. Finally, he summoned the courage to speak after a few seconds.
“I am not coming to work today, sir,” Bruce said with a tiny voice.
“What did you just say???. You are on probation, and you are already calling out??
I need you here in the office in the next five minutes." The manager fumed angrily over the phone.
“Like I said, sir, I cannot come to work today. I have a lot going on right now,” Bruce replied nonchalantly.
He wiped away a slow, involuntary tear from his eyes as he spoke and sniffed hard.
“Well then, guess what, young man. YOU ARE FIRED” the manager said over the phone, and the line went dead.
Bruce did not care. He just put the phone back in his pocket without bothering to call back.
He kept on walking absentmindedly.
A black G-wagon suddenly pulled over right beside Bruce, which startled him.
He paused and looked at it with uninterest.
Suddenly, the door opened, and a young man got out.
He was wearing a black suit with sunglasses and wore no smile.
He walked over to a startled and confused Bruce and bowed his head.
“MASTER,” the man said as he bowed his head to show some respect to Bruce.
He stood upright again and looked at Bruce.
