CHAPTER 1

A DISAPPOINTED EMPLOYEE

It was a bright, sunny afternoon in the Grand View Hotel.

The door to the manager's office opened, and a young man in an apron walked in.

The manager, a middle-aged man with a stern expression looked up at him, adjusting his eyeglasses.

“How may I help you?” He asked with a stern look.

"Sir, I need to speak with you about my salary." The young man named Bruce said, trying to keep his composure as he entered his boss's office.

Emile, his boss looked up at him from his chair,

"What about your salary, Bruce?" he asked gruffly.

"I have been working here for over a year. Sir, I haven't been paid in over a year and only came to ask if I could get my salary to care for my mother. She's in the hospital and needs some money for her surgery.

I have to raise a huge sum, and I don't have money," Bruce explained, trying to hide his emotions.

Bruce had worked for the company for over a year, diligently serving as a loyal employee.

He was a janitor in this plush hotel and tidied up the entire two hundred rooms in the hotel.

However, despite his hard work, he did not receive a single paycheck.

Despite his attempts to get his salary, he had still not received a penny. He had approached his boss two times and had still been denied his salary.

He had only continued working because he did not get any other job apart from it, and the only benefit he had was that he was seeing fed three times daily and had his utility bills sorted by the company.

He also had some huge tips from the clients from time to time, and that was what he used in taking care of his mother.

His mother, who was his sole dependent, was now lying in the hospital, fighting for her life. Bruce was desperate to get his salary to pay for her surgery, so he decided to approach his boss.

Emile let out a cold, mocking laugh.

"You're a slave, Bruce. You're not supposed to be paid. You're lucky to have a roof over your head and food on the table. You're not an employee. Your mother came begging for you to be employed. We are sorting out your utility... How dare you come to ask for payment?" Emile asked with a cold expression.

Bruce's face turned red with anger.

He was trying to act cool, but what Emile just said angered him.

"A slave? You call me a slave, sir? I've worked hard for this company for over a year, and this is how you treat me all in the name of paying utilities." Bruce fumed.

"You're not an employee, Bruce. You're a servant.” The manager repeated. “And servants don't get paid. Your mother came begging for you to be a servant here, and that is why I took you in. I don't have any money for you.” The manager fired back at him.

At that moment, Bruce was so furious that he wanted to fight the manager, but he suppressed his anger, acting cool.

“I have been working here for the past year without a single salary. Yet you treat me like I have not done anything?” He asked.

“I am not here to fight or argue, sir, I just need money for my mother's surgery. I need to save her life. She is all I have.” Bruce said calmly, trying to sound as calm as he could, so he could plead with his manager for some money.

Emile looked at him and grinned loudly.

“How many times do you want me to repeat my statement, Bruce? I don't have anything for you, boy. I don't even care if your mother dies; I have no business with you, now get out of my office,” Emile said and shifted his gaze back, focusing on what he was doing before Bruce walked in.

D*mn!”

Bruce's anger boiled over. He had just been called a slave even when he had been trying his best to work so hard for the company and not only that, his manager had just indicated that he did not have any regard for his dying mother so there was no way he was going to get a single penny.

At that moment, the anger Bruce was trying to suppress broke out of his control.

Bang!”

He hit his hand on Emile’s desk loudly in frustration.

"I quit! I can't work for a company that treats its workers like this!" Jee blurted out in a loud voice.

The manager shrugged after hearing this statement. "Suit yourself, Bruce. But don't come crying to me when you can't find another job. A lot of people are dying to replace you, and if you leave now, I will easily find your replacement. After all, it was my biggest wish for you to leave this place." He said with a grin.

Bruce shot a cold look at him and without a word, he stormed out of the office, his heart racing with anger and frustration.

He couldn't believe the nerve of his boss, calling him a slave and refusing to pay him for his hard work.

He knew he had to find another job, one that would pay him a fair wage and treat him with dignity and respect.

Even though he knew very well he had been cheated, there was little he could do because he did not even have money to fight his boss.

Walking out, he went to the reception, dropped all of his work tools in the middle, and yelled at the receptionist.

“I quit this job today and tell that ungrateful boss of yours that I will come back here for my money,” he screamed.

After saying what he wanted to say, he walked out of the building, ignoring the confused clients who were watching him as if he had gone mad.

Even the security guards who were watching him became confused and could not say anything as they watched him leave the reception and walk outside.

Bruce hissed and walked out.

As he walked out of the building, Bruce felt a sense of relief, regret, and frustration all wash over him. He knew he had made the right decision, no matter how difficult it might be. He would find another job, and he would make sure to never again work for a company that treated its workers like slaves.

As for Emile, he did not have anything in mind to do to him. However, he knew he would surely have to come back and take his money one day or another.

Bruce walked home, his mind racing with thoughts of his mother and his future. He knew he had to find a way to pay for her medical bills, and he was determined to do so.

Halfway through his journey, he got a call.

“Hello, am I unto Mr. Bruce Clinton?” The caller asked as soon as the call was answered.

“Yes, this is Bruce Clinton. How may I help you?” Bruce asked the caller.

“I am calling from Trinity Hospital.

Your mother's ailment is very severe now and deteriorating fast, and she is requesting to see you now. Please come over as soon as possible,” the caller said.

“ Okay….okay… I am on my way now. I will be there very soon,” Bruce said, and without hanging up the call, he ran as fast as his legs could carry him towards the hospital.
