Thomas watched Ava walk away and gave a small smirk. “So she doesn’t believe me, huh? It’s just one deal how hard can it be?”

He pulled out his phone and called David.

“Have you decided to return to the family business, Young Master?” David asked politely. For a second, Thomas’s face turned serious, but he quickly shook it off.

"No, David, I need you to find out what project Ava is currently working on."

After a short pause, David answered, “She’s working on a deal worth $180,000 with the Holland family. But they’re actually part of our family’s business network. Should I buy the company or bring their top guys over to talk to you?”

Hearing this, Thomas felt a mix of emotions. If he had known it would turn out this way, he would have returned to claim his inheritance much sooner. But he quickly gathered his thoughts and replied, "No need for that. Just call them and have them agree to collaborate with Ava. I don’t want him to make things difficult for her."

David hesitated before responding.

"Young Master, you could easily buy the company. Why go through all this trouble?"

Thomas rolled his eyes at David’s suggestion. He knew David was right, but he didn't want to draw attention to himself right now. Besides, when did David become so bold?

Listening to David's indifferent tone, it sounded as if buying a company was as easy as plucking grass in a bush.

"David, just do as I say. I want to keep things low-key for now. I enjoy my current life and don't want it disrupted." There was a sigh on the other end of the line, and Thomas could tell that David was frustrated about not being able to convince him to return and take over the family business.

"Alright then, young master, just give me five minutes," David said before hanging up the phone. After hearing that everything was in order, Thomas's expression became complex. He sighed, realizing that if Ava's current situation was all due to him not earning a decent salary, it would not have led her into having this business collaboration. He wondered how she would react.

Ava, you always say I’m useless. But what if you knew that I’m the one who just made this big deal happen for you? You’d never believe it.

You probably would never guess that the 'useless husband' you keep talking about is, in fact, not useless at all.

"David, there's one more thing I need your help with," Thomas said, his voice steady as he spoke into the phone.

On the other end, David's respectful tone came through again. "Young Master, what else do you need? Are you thinking about coming back to resume your position?"

Hearing David's constant references to the inheritance made Thomas rub his forehead in frustration. "You're overthinking it. I just want to make sure Ava doesn't find out about this. I have other plans." Though disappointed, David agreed, muttering under his breath, "When will you come back to take your position..." Thomas rolled his eyes at his comment and hung up the phone.

He glanced back at Ava one last time and walked away, confident she’d be heading home soon.

Ava watched as the man, who had been drinking, became increasingly inebriated. She frowned and handed him the contract she had prepared in advance.

"Meanwhile, Ava sat in the restaurant, watching as the man she was meeting Mr. Peter got more and more drunk. She handed him the contract she had prepared.

“Mr. Peter, can you take another look at this? If you’re happy with it, we can sign and be done.”

She was nervous but hopeful. If the deal went through, she’d earn a commission worth thousands enough to help pay for Emma’s medical bills.

But Mr. Peter was clearly drunk and starting to act creepy. He looked her up and down, admiring how beautiful she looked. In his mind, he thought she was too tempting to resist. Then, he got even bolder he sat next to her and said, “No need to rush. We have all day to go over this.”

Ava forced a smile. “Well, if you could just review the contract now, I’ll make sure someone drives you home safely.”

Suddenly, Mr. Peter grabbed her hand and leaned in with a gross smile. “Come on, it’s too dark to read the fine print. Let’s go upstairs and take our time looking at it.”

Then he touched her leg. Ava turned pale with shock.

Without a second thought, she stood up and slapped him hard across the face. “I’m a married woman with a child. Don’t push your luck.”

Mr. Peter was stunned. “How dare you hit me! Do you still want this deal or not? I was trying to be nice, and you repay me with a slap?”

Ava was furious. As much as she needed the deal, she couldn’t let this man treat her like that.

“If you won’t sign the deal properly, I’ll find someone else who will,” she said, picking up her papers and walking away.

Peter was fuming. How dare she walk away from him like that? He was about to stop her when his phone rang loudly.

“What the hell do you want?” he barked into the phone.

But a furious voice shouted back, “Peter! What the hell are you doing? Do you want to lose your job? I just heard you’ve been stalling on Mrs. Ava’s contract!”

Peter froze. How could Ava have reported him already?

“Murphy Diaz? How do you know about this? I just thought I should double-check her contract,” he lied.

“Don’t play dumb. I know exactly what you’re up to. You’re trying to take advantage of her because she’s good-looking. You’re disgusting.”

"Actually, Mr. Marcus is quite capable in his work, and his performance in the company has been evident. It's just that his fluctuating shares might cause some trouble for us." After saying this, Emily nervously watched Thomas' expression, afraid to make even the slightest mistake. If he got upset, her company could be taken away from her at any moment."You don't need to worry about this. You are the appointed executive director of the company, and there won't be any changes in the short term." But who could guarantee what would happen in the long run? Thomas certainly couldn't. He had his own thoughts on the matter. He was pleased to see Marcus seeking revenge and was eager to enjoy the results of that revenge.Emily picked up on Thomas's implication. The phrase "in the short term" stung her; what did that really mean? Wouldn't she lose her position as executive director and the company itself in just six months? She had initially agreed to their acquisition to help the company reac

  • CHAPTER 233

Emily had been restless ever since she learned that Marcus had returned to the company. She regretted her past decision to prioritize short-term gains, which led to the partnership with Inner Grand Corporation and effectively turned her company into a subsidiary. Now, it was hard to backtrack, so she decided to take a different approach and speak with someone higher up. She had already reassured the shareholders on her side, but now she needed to find Thomas and meet with him face-to-face. She wanted to ask him about that contract from years ago and how he had casually transferred the shares to someone else—his ex-husband, no less. As she walked into the Titanex cooperation building, she couldn't help but feel a pang of regret for choosing this place. She had completely forgotten that he still worked here. "Hello, how can I assist you today?" The receptionist at the large corporation was different—her warm and beautiful inquiry eased some of Emily's anxiety. "Hi, l'm here to se

"Have you noticed something strange? That person could be the largest shareholder now, and it won't be long before..." Samuel was quite the gossip, and the older employee next to him nodded knowingly. Everyone knew that the old man's return was no small matter, especially since he had become the biggest shareholder in the company. It was obvious what that meant."It's odd, though. Our company hasn't had any major stock sell-offs or anything. How did that person suddenly become our largest shareholder?"Becoming the largest shareholder isn't aneasy feat."Don't you know? It's Mr. Brown! He personally gave up his shares. You might not be aware of the struggles our company has faced. We were merged with another company halfway through, and our chairman is just an executive director now.""That's true. I almost forgot. After all, the Veritas Group has never really taken our little company seriously. We rarely have any contact, just a name on paper. I didn't expect their shares to pack su

Marcus nodded slightly. Adessa held back her frustration. It was clear from the start that he wasn't taking this seriously; otherwise, he wouldn't have scheduled their meeting atSuch a precarious time, leaving it open to interruptions."You see, I have other things to attend to.Let's meet again later. Don't worry, as long as you come to my side, I'll make arrangements for you," he said dismissively. Adessa felt a wave of dissatisfaction wash over her at his words, but she stood up and walked out anyway. As she passed the doorway, she glanced at the secretary, a hint of confusion in her eyes. The secretary noticed the tension from the conversation and wisely kept her mouth shut.Once outside Marcus's office, Adessa didn't leave. Instead, she turned and headed in another direction, toward Emily's office. As she walked through the company, she confirmed she was on the right track. The layout of the offices never changed, and she couldn't decide if that made the woman nostalgic or indif

As the two of them stepped outside, theyspotted the assistant. The assistant took a glance at the person behind them and noted that they looked quite decent."Hey, who's this? It can't be that Mr. Marcus wants to meet with them, right?"The secretary shot a glance at the assistant, cursing under her breath. How many more times was she going to run into this today?Adessa remained silent. As she returned to the office, it felt like she hadn't encountered anyone who recognized her; everyone was a stranger."We're in a bit of a hurry, Miss Adessa," the secretary said, gesturing for them to move along. Adessa walked past without acknowledging him. Adessa watched them leave, spitting on the ground in frustration. It was infuriating to see such petty people getting ahead. When the chairman returned, he would see just how long they could keep this up. Just because they held a few shares didn't mean they were in charge."This is Mr. Marcus' office. Please hold on for a moment," the secretary

She couldn't afford to be careless aboutanything he did; her job was now in someone else's hands."Mr. Marcus, understood."As the secretary stepped out with a list and a stack of documents, she collided with a familiar face, her gaze flickering slightly. She cursed under her breath, thinking, "Great, just my luck to run into him.""What did they have you doing in there? You seem to be running around quite diligently these days. Looks like being assigned to the new boss has really worked out for you," he said, his words dripping with sarcasm.
