The mass of shadow did not just fall; it descended with the sickening, weightless speed of a hunting spider.

Ryan’s survival instincts, screaming at a volume that completely drowned out his exhaustion, took absolute control. Before his brain could even process the movement, his hand shot out and grabbed Evelyn’s wrist. The skin-to-skin contact was electric, sending a sharp, grounding shock through his arm. With a desperate grunt, he yanked her backward into his chest.

Splat.

The liquid shadow struck the floor exactly where Evelyn’s boots had been a millisecond prior. The concrete hissed violently, a foul, black sludge instantly eating a deep, steaming crater into the stone floor. The air filled with the toxic stench of burning plastic and ozone.

"Run!" Ryan barked, his voice raw.

He didn't wait for her to reply. He kept his grip tight on her wrist, dragging her along as they tore through the narrow, twisting aisles of the library basement. Behind them, the shadow mass let out another metallic screech, the sound of tearing sheet metal echoing off the concrete walls. The fluorescent lights overhead shattered one by one in a rapid chain reaction, plunging the archives into a terrifying, flashing twilight of purple sparks.

They scrambled up the concrete stairs, their lungs burning, and burst through the heavy fire exit doors. The cold, wet autumn air hit Ryan like a physical slap. Rain was pouring down now, slicking the pavement and reflecting the dull neon lights of the city.

Across the street, the glowing green-and-yellow sign of a 24-hour convenience store offered the only immediate refuge.

"In there! Move!" Ryan panted, his sneakers slipping on the wet asphalt as they bolted across the street. They shoved through the double glass doors of Express Mart, the small overhead bell chiming in a hilariously cheerful contrast to their sheer panic.

The store was empty save for a sleepy teenage clerk behind the counter, who didn't even look up from his phone.

Ryan dragged Evelyn down the third aisle, wedging them between a towering shelf of cheap potato chips and a wall of packaged sweets. It was a tight, claustrophobic space, forcing them flush against one another.

"Are we... are we safe?" Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling.

Ryan didn't answer. He pressed his back against the metal shelving, pulling her tightly into his space to keep them hidden from the storefront windows. The sudden, extreme proximity caught them both in a suffocating grip. With the immediate threat looming just outside, the raw adrenaline coursing through Ryan’s veins took a sudden, volatile turn, morphing into a heavy, electric heat that pooled low in his abdomen.

He was pinned against her. Evelyn’s chest was heaving, her rapid, shallow breaths hot and damp against his collarbone. The scent of sweet vanilla, rain, and the intoxicating, raw musk of her fear filled his senses. In the tight aisle, her hips pressed firmly against his, the soft, curved lines of her body molding perfectly to his rigid frame. She looked up at him, her dark eyes wide, dilated, and glittering with a sudden, intense hunger that had nothing to do with the monster outside.

Ryan’s hand came up instinctively, his palm pressing flat against her lower back, pulling her even closer until there was no space left between them. He could feel the rapid, frantic drumming of her heart vibrating straight through his chest, matching the wild rhythm of his own.

"Evelyn," he muttered, his voice dropping to a low, husky register that sent a visible shiver running down her spine.

"Ryan..." she breathed, her lips parting as she tilted her head up. Her fingers dug hard into the fabric of his wet hoodie, her touch searing right through the material like a brand. The tension between them was thick, heavy, and violently magnetic. For a fleeting, reckless second, Ryan didn't care about the shadows or the magic. He wanted to press his mouth against hers, to lose himself in the soft, burning heat of her lips.

CRASH.

The romantic tension shattered into a million pieces as the front glass facade of the convenience store exploded inward.

A shower of glittering glass shards rained down over the linoleum floor. The sleepy clerk let out a high-pitched shriek, scrambling under the counter.

Through the shattered entryway strode a figure clad in a swirling, living cloak of dense, purplish-black shadow. It didn't have a face, just a void beneath a hood of writhing darkness, but two burning violet slits served as eyes. The air inside the store instantly plummeted to freezing temperatures, their breath turning to thick white plumes of mist.

"Where is the Unseen Eye?" the hunter's voice rasps, echoing with a hollow, metallic resonance that vibrated in Ryan's teeth. "Reveal yourself, mundane anomaly!"

"He's looking for you," Evelyn whispered, the spell of their embrace broken as she fumbled frantically inside her oversized trench coat. "I'll protect us! I just need to cast a—"

She whipped her glittering, star-topped wand out, stepping forward to aim it down the aisle. But her combat boots slipped on a puddle of water tracked in from the rain. She stumbled hard, her shoulder slamming into a wire display rack. The wand flew from her hand, spinning through the air, and got wedged deep between the tight, tangled wire grids of a heavy, rotating potato chip display.

"Oh, you have got to be kidding me!" Ryan hissed, his jaw dropping.

"It's stuck! The spring tension is too high!" Evelyn shrieked, frantically tugging at the plastic wand, which emitted a weak, muffled fizz from inside a bag of sour cream and onion chips.

The shadow mage’s violet eyes locked onto their aisle. He raised a hand, dark purple energy crackling violently around his fingers. "Found you."

"Get down!" Ryan grabbed Evelyn’s waist, tackling her to the floor just as a bolt of dark purple energy sizzled through the air.

The spell hit the top half of the chip rack. There was a loud, deafening BOOM. The metal rack vaporized instantly, exploding into a massive cloud of smoky potato ash, melted plastic, and sparkling pink glitter.

Ryan coughed violently, his eyes watering from the smoke. He scrambled to his knees, his heart hammering against his ribs. I should have taken online classes, he thought desperately. I could be sitting in my bed, eating cereal in my underwear, not fighting a literal shadow wizard in a convenience store.

The shadow mage took another slow, menacing step forward, his hand charging another blast of destructive magic. The metal shelves around them began to groan and warp under the sheer pressure of his power.

"Hey! Asshole!" Ryan yelled.

With a surge of frantic adrenaline, Ryan grabbed a cardboard display case of Mega-Volt energy drinks from the shelf next to him. Using his best baseball pitch, he hurled a heavy metal can of the high-caffeine drink directly at the mage's face.

Thwack!

The can struck the void beneath the hood. It didn't do any damage, but it burst open, spraying sticky, neon-green liquid all over the mage's dark cloak.

"You dare throw sugar-water at a servant of the Void?" the mage hissed, sounding genuinely insulted.

"I've got more where that came from!" Ryan yelled, throwing three more cans in rapid succession. While the mage swatted them away with sweeps of dark energy, Ryan grabbed the handle of a rolling metal shopping cart left in the aisle. He planted his foot, locked his muscles, and shoved the heavy cart with every ounce of strength he possessed.

The cart clattered loudly across the slick floor, hurtling straight toward the mage's shins.

The shadow mage raised both hands, unleashing a stream of purple fire. The intense heat hit the shopping cart, instantly turning the steel frame cherry red. The metal began to sag and melt, dripping onto the linoleum, but the momentum still carried the glowing, molten heap forward, forcing the mage to awkwardly leap backward to avoid being crushed by the hot metal.

The fire from the melted cart quickly caught on a cardboard display of toilet paper, and bright, orange flames began to lick up the side of the aisle.

Ryan’s breath was ragged. He looked around wildly for another weapon, his eyes straining through the smoke and fire.

And then, his weird, defective vision kicked in.

To anyone else, the shadow mage was a seamless, terrifying entity of darkness. But to Ryan, the cognitive filter was entirely stripped away. He didn't just see the shadow; he saw the underlying structure of the magic itself.

Floating just above the mage’s left wrist, where he was channeling the purple energy, was a tiny, swirling, unstable nexus. It looked like a cracked, spinning marble of pure violet light, pulsing out of sync with the rest of his cloak. It was the focus point of the spell.

"Evelyn! The wrist! His left wrist!" Ryan shouted, but Evelyn was still desperately trying to pry her wand out of the melted wire rack.

"I can't reach it! It’s fused to the barbecue flavor!" she yelled back.

I have to do it myself, Ryan realized, his chest heaving.

He lunged toward the open-face refrigerator section at the back of the store. His fingers gripped the handle of a heavy, ice-cold gallon of whole milk. He ripped it off the shelf.

The shadow mage recovered, his violet eyes flaring with rage as he aimed his glowing left hand directly at Ryan's chest. The dark energy gathered, spinning faster and faster, preparing to unleash a lethal blast.

"Die, anomaly!"

Ryan didn't hesitate. Using the momentum of his sprint, he spun on his heel and launched the heavy gallon of milk with a powerful, two-handed throw.

The jug flew through the air, spinning end over end.

The mage tried to raise a dark, shadowy shield to intercept it. But the magic of the shield was designed to deflect other spells. The heavy, completely non-magical, dense plastic jug of milk sailed straight through the barrier of dark energy without slowing down.

SMASH!

The gallon of milk struck the glowing violet nexus on the mage's wrist with perfect, bone-shattering force.

The plastic jug ruptured spectacularly, exploding in a massive wave of thick, white liquid. At the exact same instant, the cold, physical liquid doused the highly unstable magical focus. The discordant energy of the spell reacted violently to the sudden, physical interruption.

KABOOM!

A blinding shockwave of white and purple light erupted from the mage's wrist. The magical backfire was immense. The shadow mage let out a strangled, metallic screech as the explosion blew him backward, throwing his body through the air until he crashed violently into the ATM machine at the front of the store. The living shadows around him flickered, hissed, and began to dissolve like smoke in the wind, leaving him groaning on the floor, covered in milk and melted plastic.

"Oh my god," Ryan panted, staring at his hands. "That actually worked."

"Ryan! We have to go!" Evelyn yelled.

The fire from the melted shopping cart and toilet paper had quickly spread to the ceiling tiles. The store was filling with thick, black, toxic smoke, and the overhead sprinklers finally hissed to life, spraying cold water over the burning aisles.

Evelyn finally broke her wand free with a triumphant yell, though the star tip was now covered in charred foil packaging.

Ryan sprinted back to her, grabbing her hand. The touch was warm, wet with rain and melted milk, but he held on tight. They bypassed the groaning shadow mage on the floor and bolted out of the shattered front entrance, running headfirst into the dark, pouring rain of the city night.

The ruby eyes of the brass bird went dark, and the holographic projection dissolved into a shower of dead red sparks that singed the polished wood of Ryan’s desk."The Vanguard," Evelyn whispered. The color had completely drained from her face. She looked down at herself, swimming in Ryan’s oversized grey hoodie, and then scrambled frantically to grab her damp combat boots. "We have to go. Right now. If the Vanguard is here, they’ve already locked down the block. They don't capture, Ryan. They sanitize.""Sanitize?" Ryan’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He yanked on his sneakers, his hands shaking so violently he could barely tie the laces. Ryan and Evelyn stood in the dimly lit, carpeted hallway of the third floor, breathing in sync like two exhausted runners at the end of a marathon. They were completely soaked. Water dripped from the hem of Ryan’s threadbare hoodie, pooling onto the industrial carpet, and they both smelled like a highly questionable combination of fresh rain, burnt electronics, and sour, exploded milk."Hurry," Ryan whispered, his voice hoarse as he fumbled with his plastic key card. His fingers, still trembling from the residual adrenaline of the convenience store explosion, slipped twice before the lock finally beeped green. He pushed the door open and ushered Evelyn inside, quickly locking it behind them and throwing the deadbolt."Is your roommate here?" Evelyn whispered, her teeth chattering so hard they made a clicking sound in the dark."No," Ryan breathed, leaning

"Okay, spill," Evelyn demanded, her voice shaking slightly. "Who the hell are you, and what kind of freak can see high-grade astral cleansing magic?"Ryan stared up at her from his position on the cold, wet concrete. His left shoulder throbbed where he had landed after his desperate dive-roll, and his brain was currently struggling to process the fact that he was covered in pink glitter, smelled like a synthetic strawberry orchard, and was surrounded by hundreds of pine-tree-shaped air fresheners."Look, lady," Ryan said, his voice cracking slightly from pure, unadulterated exhaustion. "I'm just a guy who was trying to take a shortcut to his dorm so I could sleep for three hours. I don't know what astral cleansing is, and I definitely don't know why you're pointing a glowing plastic toy at my face.""It's not a toy!" Evelyn hissed. Her cheeks flushed a deep, vibrant scarlet that was highly visible even in the dim, pulsing pink glow of her wand. She stepped closer, her combat boots squ

Instead, it just made his ears freeze and reminded him of his profound, soul-crushing poverty.Pulling out his phone, he tapped on his banking app with a thumb that felt like a frozen sausage. "Great," he muttered to himself, shoving his hands deep into the pockets of his threadbare hoodie. "Two dollars and thirty-four cents. I can’t even afford the cheap instant ramen. I’m going to have to resort to eating the decorative pinecones outside the biology building."Determined to cut his misery
