Bella’s breath came in short gasps, her body still trembling beneath the thin sheet that barely covered her. The dim lights above her hung like artificial stars, and the night breeze slipping through the open window carried a soft chill that only made the sweat on her skin feel more real.

She lay on the edge of the bed, her hair fanned out across a dark grey satin pillow. Vincent sat at the side of the bed, his back to her, showing only his broad shoulders and an unwavering posture that looked like it had never bowed to anyone. He hadn’t said a word since.

He just stared at the large window facing the city, his expression unreadable.

With her eyes half-closed and a faint smile still lingering on her lips, Bella reached out and leaned softly against his back.
