So Dylan gave her exactly what she wanted… a divorce. What Rachel never knew was that the man she humiliated was the true heir of the Sterling family, the most powerful financial empire in the city. Chapter 1

The dining room table gleamed under the soft chandelier light, each dish arranged with meticulous care.

Dylan stepped back, surveying his work—roasted chicken with herbs, garlic mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, and Rachel's favorite strawberry cheesecake positioned at the center. He glanced at his watch: 9:47 PM. The food had long since gone cold.

He pulled out his phone and stared at the screen. Twelve missed calls. Zero responses.

The front door suddenly burst open, and Rachel stumbled inside, her designer heels clicking unevenly against the hardwood floor.

The sharp scent of alcohol preceded her into the room. Her hair, usually immaculate, hung loose around her flushed face, and her eyes were glassy.

"Rachel," Dylan said quietly, moving toward her. "Are you alright?"

She waved him off with an irritated gesture, nearly losing her balance. "I'm fine. Stop hovering."

"I've been calling you all evening. I was worried—"

"God, Dylan!" Rachel's voice cracked through the air like a whip. She threw her purse onto the couch with unnecessary force. "Do you have any idea what I've been dealing with today? The IPO is next week. Next. Week. And you're blowing up my phone like some clingy teenager?"

Dylan's jaw tightened, but his voice remained steady. "Today is our wedding anniversary, Rachel. Emma waited up for hours, hoping you'd come home to celebrate with us."

The words hung in the air for a moment before Rachel's expression twisted into something ugly—a mixture of disdain and fury.

"Anniversary?" She laughed, the sound harsh and brittle. "Are you serious right now? You drag me down with your pathetic little domestic fantasies while I'm out there actually making something of myself, and you want to talk about anniversaries?"

"Rachel—"

"No!" She advanced on him, her finger jabbing toward his chest. "Do you know what I went through at that banquet today? Do you have any concept of the pressure I'm under? Of course you don't. You're too busy playing house and obsessing over meaningless dates."

Dylan's voice remained calm, almost eerily so. "Isn't the Sterling family taking care of everything?"

Rachel froze mid-gesture, her eyes narrowing to slits. The drunken haze seemed to clear slightly as suspicion crept across her features. "How do you know about the Sterling family?"

Silence filled the space between them. Dylan simply looked at her, his expression unreadable.

A cold sneer slowly spread across Rachel's face. "I don't know where you heard that name, probably eavesdropping on my phone calls like the nosy little househusband you are." She crossed her arms, swaying slightly. "But yes, the Sterling family is helping. Thanks entirely to Harry—Harry Morrison, heir to the Morrison family fortune. He introduced me to them. Harry actually has connections, power, influence. What do you have, Dylan? What exactly do you bring to this marriage besides your mediocre cooking and your constant nagging?"

Dylan said nothing, his eyes fixed on her face as if seeing her for the first time—or perhaps the last.

Rachel's voice grew more venomous. "You want to know the truth? I'm humiliated by you. Everyone at tonight's banquet asked why I came alone, why I didn't bring a date. They all had successful partners on their arms—CEOs, investors, entrepreneurs. And what do I have? A husband who stays home and changes diapers."

She laughed again, that same brittle sound. "If it wasn't for that stupid mistake five years ago—if I hadn't gotten pregnant with Emma—I would never have married you. Do you understand that? I would rather have died than tie myself to someone as useless as you."

The woman standing before him was a stranger wearing Rachel's face. Dylan felt something inside him finally break—not with pain, but with a cold, crystalline clarity.

"You and that child are anchors around my neck," Rachel continued, her words slurring slightly as the alcohol reasserted itself. "Dragging me down, keeping me from the life I deserve. Every time I look at Emma, I see another year of my life wasted. Every time I come home to you, I feel my potential dying a little more."

"We should get a divorce."

The words came out quiet but absolute. Dylan's voice carried no anger, no hurt—just finality.

Rachel's face contorted with fresh rage. "Are you kidding me? Now you want to abandon your responsibilities? You're not just useless—you're a coward too! You can't even commit to the mess you created!"

But Dylan was already walking away, moving toward the bedroom with measured steps. He didn't look back, didn't acknowledge her shouting.

"Don't you dare walk away from me!" Rachel shrieked. "Dylan! ETHAN!"

The bedroom door closed softly behind him, the quiet click somehow more devastating than a slam.

Rachel stood alone in the dining room, chest heaving, fury coursing through her veins. She looked at the table—the carefully prepared meal, the flowers, the anniversary card propped against a wine glass. With a guttural scream, she swept her arm across the surface, sending plates crashing to the floor in an explosion of porcelain and food. Again and again she struck, until the table was bare and the floor was a battlefield of broken dishes and ruined hopes.
