Chapter 7 — The Thirty-Six Dead
The voices echoed through the Tower.
"Welcome back, Subject 36."
Ethan couldn't move.
Thirty-six people stood in the open doorways.
Men.
Women.
Young.
Old.
Some wore military uniforms.
Others wore laboratory coats.
One was covered in scars.
Another had a mechanical arm.
They were different.
But Ethan recognized them.
Every single one.
His memories came rushing back.
The soldier who had saved him during the first winter.
The doctor who had treated his wounds.
The hacker who had controlled the communications network.
The woman who had betrayed an entire settlement.
The man who had become the King of the Wasteland.
They were all there.
Alive.
Yet Ethan had watched every one of them die.
His breathing became shallow.
"This isn't possible."
The woman in the white coat smiled.
"You've said that before."
Ethan looked at her.
"Who are you?"
"You still don't remember."
"Tell me."
She shook her head.
"You have to remember yourself."
Mia stepped beside Ethan.
"Stop playing games."
The woman's eyes moved toward her.
"You're still protective of him."
"I don't even know him."
A faint smile appeared.
"You don't remember."
Mia clenched her fists.
"Who am I?"
The woman didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Ethan.
"Ask him."
Ethan stared at Mia.
A strange feeling filled his chest.
He had known her.
Not for months.
Not for years.
For much longer.
He just couldn't access the memory.
Suddenly, the Tower shook.
A deep mechanical sound rolled through the walls.
The thirty-six people turned simultaneously toward a giant screen.
Numbers appeared.
71:02:13
The countdown was decreasing.
The woman in the white coat looked at Ethan.
"You have seventy-one hours."
"For what?"
"To make a choice."
"What choice?"
"Who survives."
Ethan frowned.
"Everyone."
She smiled.
"That's what you said the first time."
"What happened?"
"You failed."
A man stepped out of one of the rooms.
He was enormous.
Nearly two meters tall.
His face was covered in scars.
Ethan recognized him.
Marcus Kane.
In Ethan's memories, Marcus had become the leader of the largest survivor faction.
He had killed hundreds.
But he had also saved thousands.
Ethan had eventually fought him.
They had killed each other.
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"You look weaker."
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"You remember me?"
"All of us remember you."
Ethan stared.
"Then why don't I remember you?"
Marcus laughed.
"Because you're the one who always forgets."
Another person stepped forward.
A woman with short silver hair.
"Don't waste time."
Ethan recognized her too.
Dr. Lena Voss.
She had developed the first treatment for the mutation virus.
She had died during the fourth year.
Yet here she stood.
Lena looked at Ethan.
"The reset has begun early."
Adrian's voice suddenly came through Ethan's radio.
"Leave the Tower."
Ethan grabbed the radio.
"Adrian?"
Static.
Then his voice returned.
"Immediately."
"Why?"
"Because the Tower isn't supposed to activate until the final stage."
Ethan looked at the woman in white.
"What final stage?"
She smiled.
"The stage where you die."
The radio went silent.
Ethan turned to Mia.
"We're leaving."
The woman shook her head.
"You can't."
"Watch me."
Ethan moved toward the entrance.
The corridor stretched.
The exit was visible.
He ran.
Mia followed.
But after ten seconds, Ethan realized something was wrong.
They weren't getting closer.
The door remained the same distance away.
"What is this?"
Mia looked around.
"We're moving."
"No."
Ethan stopped.
"The Tower is moving us."
The walls changed.
The doors disappeared.
A new corridor appeared.
Mia whispered:
"We're trapped."
Ethan touched the wall.
It was warm.
Almost alive.
The woman in the white coat's voice echoed around them.
"You always try to escape."
Ethan shouted:
"Show yourself!"
"Why?"
"Because I have questions."
"You have thousands."
"Then answer one."
Silence.
Ethan took a breath.
"Who is Maya?"
The Tower became completely silent.
Mia looked at him.
"Why did you ask about her?"
"Because she is connected to this."
"How?"
"I don't know."
The woman finally answered.
"Maya Carter was never your wife."
Ethan's heart stopped.
"What?"
"She was assigned to you."
Mia stared.
"Assigned?"
"To protect you."
Ethan's hands tightened.
"Then why did she betray me?"
"She didn't."
"Then who did?"
The answer came immediately.
"You did."
Ethan froze.
"What?"
"You betrayed Maya."
His mind flashed.
A room.
Maya crying.
Ethan shouting.
A suitcase.
A door closing.
But this time, the memory was different.
Maya wasn't leaving him.
Ethan was.
He was walking away from her.
She was begging him to stay.
"Don't go."
Ethan heard her voice.
"Please."
Then his younger self said something.
"If I stay, they'll find you."
The memory vanished.
Ethan staggered.
Mia caught him.
"You okay?"
He looked at her.
"I left her."
Mia frowned.
"What?"
"I didn't abandon her."
Ethan's voice shook.
"She was protecting me."
The woman in white spoke again.
"Now you understand."
"Why was she protecting me?"
"Because she knew what you would become."
"What would I become?"
The Tower's lights went out.
A second later, every screen illuminated.
A video appeared.
Ethan saw himself.
But not the Ethan he remembered.
This Ethan wore black armor.
His eyes were glowing.
Black energy covered his hands.
Behind him stood dozens of bodies.
And beside him—
Maya.
She was crying.
Ethan watched the recording.
His younger self looked directly into the camera.
"If you're seeing this, then the reset worked."
Ethan stared.
His recorded self continued.
"I don't know how many times we've tried."
"Maybe seven."
"Maybe seventy."
"But if this is Cycle Eight..."
He paused.
"...then we have one final chance."
The recording changed.
A map appeared.
Thirty-seven red points.
Then one disappeared.
Thirty-six remained.
Ethan's recorded voice continued.
"Do not trust the thirty-six."
Ethan's face changed.
The people surrounding him stared.
His recorded self continued:
"They aren't survivors."
"They are anchors."
Mia whispered:
"What does that mean?"
The recording answered.
"They exist to keep the apocalypse repeating."
The screens went black.
Then one final sentence appeared.
KILL ALL 36.
Silence.
Marcus stepped forward.
"So."
He cracked his knuckles.
"That's your order?"
Ethan looked at him.
"I don't know."
Marcus smiled.
"You always say that."
Lena stepped forward.
"Ethan."
"What?"
"Look at the countdown."
Ethan turned.
The timer was no longer decreasing.
It was increasing.
71:02:13
71:02:14
71:02:15
Mia's eyes widened.
"It's going up."
Lena nodded.
"That's bad."
"Why?"
"Because the countdown isn't measuring time."
Ethan looked at her.
"Then what is it measuring?"
Lena's face became pale.
"Deaths."
The number continued increasing.
71:02:16
71:02:17
Somewhere outside the Tower, screams erupted.
Ethan heard thousands of people.
Then millions.
The black rain suddenly stopped.
The Tower began absorbing the sound.
Lena whispered:
"Every time someone dies outside..."
The number increased.
Ethan stared at the timer.
"Then what happens when it reaches zero?"
Lena didn't answer.
Mia did.
"Maybe it isn't counting down."
She looked at Ethan.
"Maybe it's counting how many people have to die."
The Tower shook.
A deep voice echoed through every room.
"PHASE TWO COMPLETE."
"PHASE THREE INITIATED."
The thirty-six survivors suddenly collapsed.
All at once.
Ethan ran toward Marcus.
"Marcus!"
Marcus opened his eyes.
Something black was spreading through his veins.
Ethan grabbed him.
"What happened?"
Marcus smiled weakly.
"It found us."
"What found you?"
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"The thing beneath the Tower."
Ethan's stomach dropped.
"What thing?"
Marcus whispered:
"The original."
Then his eyes turned completely black.
He attacked.
Ethan barely dodged the first strike.
Marcus smashed through the wall.
Mia screamed.
"Ethan!"
Ethan raised his hands.
Black energy began forming around his arms.
He had no idea how to control it.
But his body remembered.
His eyes changed.
For a moment, Ethan heard a voice inside his head.
His own voice.
From another life.
"If Marcus wakes up..."
The voice continued.
"...kill him before he remembers what he did to Maya."
Ethan stared at Marcus.
Marcus smiled.
"I remember now."
Ethan's blood froze.
Marcus whispered:
"You're the one who killed her."
And behind Ethan, the woman in white whispered:
"Now the real story begins."
