THUD...

THUD...

THUD...

The heavy footsteps echoed through the silent hospital corridor.

Ethan's heartbeat quickened.

He stared at the glowing blue screen floating before him.

Main Mission

Escape the hospital within 60 minutes.

Reward: Hidden Guardian Skill.

Failure: Death.

Death...

The word alone sent chills down his spine.

"E-Excuse me..." Ethan called out to the nurse. "Who's outside?"

The nurse frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The ....footsteps?." Ethan asked

She looked into the hallway.

"There isn't anyone there."

Ethan froze.

How could she not hear them?

"Are you sure?..... Are you not hearing those footsteps..."

He asked the nurse looking scared

"I think you need some brain checkup because no one is coming here".

The nurse said sarcastically .

He panicked and said

" Noo.... I was just trying to prank you. "

He smiled

The nurse then said "weird" and walked out .

The moment she walked out of the door

THUD...

The footsteps came again.

Closer.

Much closer.

Only Ethan could hear them.

A cold robotic voice echoed inside his mind.

Host Warning.

The Shadow Devourer exists outside normal human perception.

Only Guardians can sense its presence.

"So... ordinary people can't see it?"

Correct.

Ethan swallowed hard.

That meant everyone in the hospital was in danger without even realizing it.

Suddenly—

The lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Patients screamed from nearby wards.

Emergency alarms began blaring.

BEEEEEP!

Power Failure!

The nurse gasped and ran back to his ward and said panicking

"Stay here! I'll check the electrical room."

She rushed outside again.

The moment she disappeared...

The temperature dropped.

Ice formed on the hospital window.

A deep growl echoed from the corridor.

GRRRRRRR....

Ethan slowly looked toward the doorway.

A pair of glowing crimson eyes appeared in the darkness.

Then another.

Then another.

A massive black figure stepped into view.

It was over eight feet tall.

Its body looked like a living smoke.

Its claws scraped against the tiled floor.

Its face...

Had no mouth.

Only countless glowing red eyes.

The Shadow Devourer.

Ethan's breathing became uneven.

"Why... is it here?"

The System answered.

Reason:

The System's energy attracted the Devourer.

Objective: Consume the Host before growth begins.

"So it wants to kill me before I become stronger?"

Correct.

The monster tilted its head.

Although it had no mouth...

A voice echoed directly inside Ethan's head.

Found... You...

The creature lunged.

WHOOSH!

Its enormous claw slashed through the hospital bed.

CRAAASH!!

Metal twisted like paper.

If Ethan had remained there...

He would have been cut in half.

He rolled across the floor and shouted.

"System! Help me!"

Emergency Mission Activated.

A blue window appeared.

Emergency Mission

Survive for five minutes.

Reward:

Guardian Instinct (Passive Skill)

100 Experience Points

Failure:

Death

"Five minutes?!"

The monster charged again.

Ethan barely dodged.

Its claw smashed into the wall.

Concrete exploded everywhere.

Doctors and nurses outside heard only loud crashes.

To them...

It looked as though furniture was flying around by itself.

Panic spread throughout the hospital.

Ethan sprinted into the hallway.

People rushed past him, screaming.

The Shadow Devourer walked calmly behind him.

No one noticed it.

No one except Ethan.

"Move!"

He pushed people away from danger.

An old man stumbled.

Without thinking...

Ethan grabbed him before he fell.

The old man looked shocked.

"Thank you, young man."

DING!

The System spoke.

Host protected an innocent life.

Guardian Points +10.

Ethan blinked.

"I get rewarded for saving people?"

Correct.

A Guardian grows stronger by protecting others.

For the first time...

He understood.

This System wasn't about revenge.

It was about becoming humanity's protector.

The countdown continued.

03:12 Remaining...

The monster suddenly disappeared.

Ethan looked around.

"Where did it go?"

Silence.

Too much silence.

Then...

The System screamed.

DANGER ABOVE!!

Ethan instinctively looked up.

The ceiling exploded.

BOOOOOOM!!

The Shadow Devourer crashed down like a meteor.

Its claws shot straight toward Ethan's chest.

There was no time to dodge.

Then...

A brilliant golden shield appeared in front of him.

CLANG!!

The monster's claws stopped inches from his heart.

A new voice echoed through the hallway.

Calm.

Powerful.

Ancient.

"So... the Almighty Guardian System has finally found a new master."

A man wearing a black coat stood at the end of the corridor.

His face was hidden beneath a hood.

In his right hand...

He held a glowing golden spear.

The Shadow Devourer took its first step backward.

Then the stranger slowly raised his head and said—

" The chosen one... I've been searching for you."

End of Chapter 3

Who is the mysterious spear-wielding man? Is he a friend, another Guardian, or someone with his own agenda? And why has he been searching for Ethan before Ethan even knew the System existed?

  • The Woman Behind the Door

Chapter 35: "Ethan..." The voice came again. Soft. Faint. Almost like a memory. But Ethan knew it. His mother's voice. He stood frozen before the Guardian Vault. For years, he had convinced himself that he had accepted her death. He had buried the memories. He had learned to live without her. And now, after all these years, that familiar voice had returned. "Ethan..." He stepped toward the door. Sophia immediately caught his arm. "Wait." Ethan looked at her. "That's my mother." "You don't know that." "I know her voice." Sophia didn't release him. "And we just learned that someone may be manipulating the Guardian network." Ethan's expression tightened. She was right. Everything surrounding the Vault was suspicious. M

  • The Woman in the Photograph

Chapter 34: Ethan didn't sleep. He spent the entire night sitting in the control room. The words continued repeating in his mind. Your mother never died. It was impossible. At least, that's what he had always believed. He remembered the funeral. The flowers. The black clothes. His father's tears. The photograph placed beside the coffin. He remembered being told that she had died from an illness. He had been too young to understand. But now... Everything was suddenly questionable. At six in the morning, Sophia found him. She didn't say anything at first. She simply placed a cup of coffee beside him. Ethan looked up. "You heard." Sophia nodded. "I heard." "What do you think?" She sat beside him. "I think we need evidence." Ethan looked toward the screen. "I know." "Not hope." "Not rumors." "Evidence." He nodded. "You're right." Sophia smiled. "You're learning." Ethan gave her a tired look. "You say that a lot." "Because it's true." Grace entered t

Chapter 33: Ethan couldn't move. For several seconds, he simply stared. Marcus Vale stood in the dimly lit warehouse as if he belonged there. His black coat was perfectly dry despite the rain outside. His expression was calm. Almost amused. And beside him stood Lily. But it wasn't Lily's presence that frightened Ethan the most. It was the fact that Marcus was standing inside the shelter's outer security zone. A place no outsider should have been able to enter. Sophia immediately stepped in front of Ethan, her spear glowing faintly. "Stay behind me." Marcus smiled. "Still protective, I see." Sophia's expression hardened. "How did you get inside?" Marcus didn't answer. Instead, he loo
