Lukas has already died twice in the burning ruins of a world consumed by the System. Now, he is thrown back to the very moment the apocalypse began—ten minutes before the first rift tore the sky apart. With the memory of his past failures and a mysterious System leveling his path, Lukas knows exactly where the dangers lie and how to strike back. But as the lines between hunter and prey blur, Lukas realizes this timeline is different: his enemy, Vell, has been chosen by the System to ascend, and the world is no longer just a game of survival, but a race to the Spire of Null before the purge wipes humanity from existence.

Chapter 1: Ten Minutes to Midnight

The air felt cold. Too cold. Lukas gasped, his lungs burning as if he had just inhaled liquid nitrogen. He scrambled backward, his spine slamming against the hard wooden floorboards of his bedroom. The damp darkness of the ruined bunker, the smell of rotting concrete, and the sound of his own blood dripping onto the floor were gone.

He blinked. The pale morning light filtered through thin curtains, casting long, dusty shadows across his room. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird.

"This isn't real," he rasped, his voice sounding thin and foreign in the quiet.

He stared at his hands. They were unscarred. No calluses from months of desperate survival, no jagged bite marks from the infected. He reached out and touched the nightstand. The wood was solid. He stood up, his legs shaking violently, and walked toward the full-length mirror leaning against the wall. A younger version of himself stared back. The hollow eyes and the graying hair of his end-time persona were gone, replaced by the clean, exhausted face of his past self.

He looked at the digital clock on his nightstand. 11:50 PM.

Ten minutes.

The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow. He lunged for his backpack in the corner. He remembered this night. He remembered the specific, agonizing silence that came just before the world fell apart. He grabbed his sturdy hiking bag and began throwing items into it. A heavy flashlight. Two bottles of water. A box of high-protein bars. He snatched the kitchen knife from the drawer near his bed, testing the weight in his palm.

"If this is a hallucination, I at least have a weapon," he muttered to the empty room.

He paced the floor, his breath hitching. His mind raced through the memories of the first week of the collapse. He knew the initial spawn points. He knew the layout of the complex. If he was really back, he had to move now. He had to be out of the apartment block before the stairwells became death traps.

He pulled on his thickest boots and tied the laces until they cut into his skin. His hands wouldn't stop shaking. He looked at the window. Outside, the city lights flickered normally. Traffic moved in lazy streams along the boulevard. It was a picture of peace, yet Lukas knew exactly what was hiding under the surface of reality. The System was coming. The barriers between worlds were already thinning.

A low hum, barely audible, began to vibrate through the floorboards.

Lukas froze. He knew that sound. It was the precursor to the tear. He threw the bag over his shoulder and checked the knife one more time. The metal felt cold, grounding him in the moment. He moved to the front door and pressed his ear against it. Silence. No neighbors fighting, no sirens yet.

"Stay calm," he whispered, forcing his heart rate down. "Just get to the basement."

He cracked the door open. The hallway smelled of laundry detergent and stale air. It was mundane, perfectly ordinary, and entirely temporary. He slipped into the corridor, his feet making no sound on the thin carpet. He reached the stairwell, but stopped dead.

Down the hall, a flickering lightbulb hummed and then popped, showering the carpet in glass shards. That was his signal.

He moved toward the stairs, but his legs felt heavy, weighed down by the phantom trauma of a life he had already lived and lost. He gripped the railing. He could hear a rhythmic thumping coming from the apartment across the hall. Someone was banging on their own door from the inside.

"Help! Can someone open this? The handle is jammed!"

Lukas hesitated. In his previous life, he had stopped to help. He had died for it. He closed his eyes for a split second, feeling the ghost of a blade piercing his chest. He didn't turn back. He descended the stairs, his pace increasing until he was sprinting down the concrete steps. He had to reach the supply locker in the basement before anyone else figured out what was happening.

He reached the ground floor and burst through the door into the lobby. The front glass wall of the building faced the city skyline. Lukas stopped in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat.

The sky above the city center was no longer dark. A jagged, violet tear had ripped through the clouds. It was wide, pulsating with a sickening, rhythmic light that seemed to swallow the stars. Beneath it, the skyline shifted. Huge, impossible structures made of obsidian and glowing runes began to manifest in the middle of the street, crushing vehicles and lampposts like toys.

The silence of the city was shattered by a collective scream that rose from the streets below. It wasn't the sound of humans. It was something deeper, a guttural, wet tearing noise that signaled the arrival of the vanguard.

Lukas watched as the first of the creatures, a spindly, multi-limbed shadow, dropped from the rift and landed directly onto the hood of a parked taxi. It stood up, its eyes glowing with a faint, malevolent red light. It tilted its head, scanning the lobby through the glass wall.

It looked directly at Lukas.

He backed away, his hand tightening on the knife. The streetlights flickered and died. Outside, the atmosphere shifted, turning heavy and stagnant. Lukas looked up, and his heart nearly stopped. The violet light from the rift began to bleed downward, washing over the city in waves.

The color of the sky deepened. It turned a dark, bruised shade of purple, then streaked with thick veins of crimson. Within seconds, the entire horizon glowed with a terrifying, bloody hue. The apocalypse had begun. The first rift had fully stabilized, and the air began to thicken with a static charge that made Lukas's hair stand on end.

The creature outside let out a screech that vibrated against the glass. The glass cracked. One, two, three fractures spiderwebbed across the front window.

"It's starting," Lukas whispered.

The glass shattered inward as the creature lunged.
