The loud, metallic click of a heavy sniper rifle echoed across the floating metal platform, stopping Julian in his tracks.

He spun around instantly, raising his tactical rifle with shaking hands, but his heart sank when he saw who was standing at the edge of the arrival zone. The plasma crosshairs of the long weapon were locked squarely on Maya's back.

It was Viktor.

The pirate captain looked battered and bruised from their fight in the reactor room, and his clothes were covered in soot and blood, but a cruel, victorious grin stretched across his scarred face. Somehow, through sheer luck or dark magic, the traitor had followed them straight through Master Orson's golden archway.

"Drop your weapons right now, or I turn your sister into red mist," Viktor shouted, his voice ringing over the noise of the flying metropolis around them.

Commander Eleanor Vance cursed loudly, her hand hovering near her silver dagger, but she knew she could not move fast enough to stop a sniper round at that distance. Old Man Marrow clenched his jaw so hard his teeth clicked, glaring at the pirate with pure hatred.

Only Maya did not panic. She did not even turn around. Instead, she stood completely still on the edge of the high platform, looking out at the endless sea of neon towers and flying airships that made up the upper realm.

"You survived the core meltdown, Viktor," Maya said, her voice calm and steady as she looked straight ahead. "I suppose I should be impressed by your persistence."

"You outsmarted me back in New Oxford, little girl," Viktor laughed, his finger resting lightly on the trigger of the heavy plasma rifle. "You locked the bulkheads and thought you won. But a pirate always knows how to find a backdoor out of a sinking ship. And now, this floating city is my new playground. Hand over the administrative override codes for the upper financial grid, or this ride ends right here."

Julian took a slow step to the side, trying to line up a clear shot, but Viktor adjusted his stance instantly, keeping the crosshairs centered on Maya's chest.

"Do not move another inch, boy," Viktor warned, his eyes flashing with dangerous intent. "My finger is twitching, and this gun packs enough power to blow right through both of you."

Julian stopped, his chest burning with raw anger. They had fought through five hundred years of traps, outsmarted ancient tyrants, and survived a nuclear countdown, only to be held hostage by a greedy pirate on their very first minute in a new world.

"You think the upper financial grid belongs to you just because you followed us through a portal?" Maya asked, her tone turning cold and sharp.

"It belongs to whoever takes it," Viktor replied smoothly. "And right now, I have the gun."

Maya finally turned around. She looked at Viktor not with fear, but with the same calculating expression she used when destroying an enemy corporation. She reached slowly into the pocket of her hoodie, her fingers brushing against her phone.

"You made one fatal mistake, Viktor," Maya said quietly.

Viktor sneered, tightening his grip on the weapon. "And what is that?"

"You forgot to check your own equipment before you jumped through the portal," Maya said.

Before Viktor could pull the trigger, Maya tapped her phone screen twice.

A sharp, high-pitched beep rang out from the plasma sniper rifle in Viktor's hands. The weapon's glowing energy display flickered from bright blue to a harsh, warning red, and a series of small internal locks clicked shut with a loud mechanical snap.

Viktor looked down at his rifle in sudden confusion. "What is this? Why is the safety lock engaged?"

"When you stole that military-grade rifle from our supply cache in New Oxford," Maya explained, her voice cutting through the wind like a knife, "you forgot that all our tactical gear is linked to my personal network via a remote encryption handshake. The moment you stepped through the archway into this realm, my phone recognized your weapon's serial number."

Viktor cursed loudly, desperately pulling the trigger, but the gun remained completely dead. The internal safety mechanism had permanently jammed the firing pin.

"You little witch!" Viktor roared in blind fury, throwing the useless sniper rifle aside. He drew a heavy combat knife from his belt and lunged forward across the metal platform to grab Maya.

Julian moved faster than thought. He dropped his rifle, lunged across the gap between them, and tackled Viktor hard around the waist. The two men crashed onto the cold metal grating of the platform, rolling dangerously close to the open edge that dropped thousands of feet into the clouds below.

Viktor swung his knife wildly, trying to slash Julian's arm, but Julian caught the pirate's wrist with both hands, using his entire body weight to pin the man down.

"This is for every betrayal!" Julian shouted, driving his fist straight into Viktor's jaw with a sickening crunch.

Viktor groaned, his head hitting the metal floor as his eyes rolled back. He went completely limp, finally knocked out cold.

Julian pushed himself up, breathing heavily as he wiped a drop of sweat from his forehead. He looked over at Maya, who was calmly slipping her phone back into her pocket as if nothing unusual had just happened.

Old Man Marrow let out a loud whistle, walking over to kick Viktor's unconscious leg. "Well, that settles that. What do we do with him now?"

Eleanor looked around the sprawling neon metropolis, her face serious as several armed patrol drones began to fly toward their platform from the nearby towers, drawn by the commotion. "We leave him for the upper city guards. We have bigger problems right now."

Maya pointed toward the approaching patrol drones, her dark eyes scanning the glowing skyline with absolute focus. "Eleanor is right. Look up."

In the center of the largest floating tower across the bay, a massive holographic screen flickered to life. It displayed the faces of five stern men and women wearing golden robes, the ruling council of the upper realm.

"Attention, lower-world trespassers," a deep, echoing voice boomed across the entire sector. "You have crossed into sovereign territory without authorization and seized control of restricted assets. Security forces have been dispatched to neutralize your group immediately."

Julian stepped beside Maya, taking her hand as thousands of armed security guards began pouring out of the transport vessels surrounding their platform. The odds were impossible, but the fire in their eyes was stronger than ever.

"Looks like they know we are here," Julian said, a fierce smile forming on his lips.

"Good," Maya answered, her voice steady and proud. "Let them come."
