A white-hot plasma blast scorched the stone floor inches from Julian's boots, showering the narrow corridor with sharp rock splinters.

Julian pulled the pin on his grenade and hurled it straight into the pack of advancing combat turrets. The heavy explosion rocked the underground chamber, shattering two of the machines into smoking pieces of twisted metal, but three more rolled forward from the dark wall panels to take their place.

Commander Eleanor Vance fired her pistol rapidly, the bullets pinging harmlessly off the heavy armor of the oncoming machines. Old Man Marrow swung his iron pipe at a stray mechanical arm, but the sheer force of the blow rattled his tired bones and knocked him back against the wall.

"We are running out of time and ammo!" Eleanor shouted over the deafening roar of the turret guns.

Maya did not flinch. Her dark eyes remained fixed on the small screen of her phone, her fingers moving across the glass with cold, terrifying speed. She did not show a single drop of fear, operating with the precise logic of someone who refused to let an obstacle stand in her way.

"Three seconds!" Maya said clearly.

Julian raised his rifle again, shielding his sister's back as another wave of energy fire lit up the dark hall. "Make it now!"

Maya tapped the final key on her screen with absolute calm.

A loud, sharp click echoed through the stone chamber. Instantly, the charging lights on every combat turret blinked from bright red to dead black. The heavy barrels dropped toward the floor, and the machines powered down with a quiet hum, completely disabled by her hack.

Silence rushed back into the room, broken only by the heavy breathing of the group as the smoke slowly began to clear.

The heavy steel bars blocking the path ahead groaned loudly and slid upward into the ceiling, revealing a dark, winding staircase leading further down into the trial facility.

"That is how you handle automated security," Maya said simply, slipping her phone back into her pocket as she stepped over the wreckage of the disabled turrets.

Julian let out a long breath, lowering his rifle and walking up beside her. He reached out to check her arm, making sure she was not hurt. "You cut that way too close, Maya."

"Survival requires risk, Julian," Maya replied, her voice soft but firm as she looked up at him. "And we did not come this far to fail at the first gate."

Marrow rubbed his bruised shoulder, chuckling as he stepped over a piece of broken metal. "Remind me never to play chess against you, kid. You are entirely ruthless."

Eleanor checked the clip in her pistol, keeping her eyes focused on the dark staircase ahead. "That was only the first gate. The council said there are seven trials before we reach the central vault. The defenses will only get worse from here."

"Let them throw whatever they want at us," Julian said, his jaw set with fierce determination. "We are going through."

They moved down the winding stone stairs together, leaving the ruined chamber behind. The air grew colder with every step, and the heavy smell of ozone faded into a damp, metallic scent that clung to their clothes.

After five minutes of fast walking, the stairs opened up into a vast underground cavern. In the center of the room stood a massive circular platform suspended over a deep pit of glowing blue energy. Across the pit, on the opposite side of the cavern, a second stone archway pulsed with a bright violet light, marking the entrance to the next trial.

Between them and the archway lay a narrow bridge made of glass panels that stretched across the glowing abyss.

"Look at the glass," Marrow warned, stopping at the edge of the platform and pointing his iron pipe forward. "Those panels are not solid. They are wired with high-voltage circuits."

Maya stepped to the very edge of the platform, her dark gaze studying the glowing lines running beneath the transparent glass. "It is a logic puzzle combined with a weight sensor. Only one specific path across the bridge will deactivate the shock circuits. If we step on the wrong panel, the entire bridge will fry anyone standing on it."

Julian looked down at the deadly drop beneath the glass, then back at his sister. "Can you hack the sequence from here?"

"No," Maya answered, shaking her head. "The control relay is located on a terminal on the other side of the bridge. Someone has to walk across and plug the bypass cable in manually."

Eleanor stepped forward without a second of hesitation. "I will go. Cover me."

"Wait," Maya said, raising her hand to stop her. "You cannot just walk across. The weight sensor responds to biometric signatures. The system knows we are lower-district intruders, and it programmed this bridge specifically to trap us."

"Then what do we do?" Julian asked, his eyes narrowing as he sensed another danger approaching.

Before Maya could answer, the massive stone wall behind them slammed shut with a thunderous crash, cutting off their return path completely. At the same time, the ceiling above the entrance platform slid open, and a heavy automated transport crane dropped a massive, heavily armored combat robot onto the floor behind them.

The robot was twice the size of a man, carrying a rotating plasma cannon in each hand and glowing with a fierce red light.

"Trap sprung," Marrow growled, raising his iron pipe as the giant machine took a heavy step toward them.

"It wants to force us onto the bridge before we can solve the path," Maya said quickly, her mind racing through the options in a fraction of a second. "Julian, hold it off for thirty seconds. I am going across."

"No, Maya" Julian started, but she had already stepped onto the first glass panel of the bridge.

The moment her boots touched the glass, a sharp electric hum echoed through the cavern. The panels around her lit up in a terrifying pattern of flashing red and blue light, and the giant robot behind them raised its plasma cannons, preparing to fire a devastating blast straight at the platform.
