The metal bell above the door gave a dry click.

Julian stepped inside the shop and kicked the heavy door shut against the rain. Water dripped from his black jacket onto the dirty floorboards. His hands hurt. They were cut, bloody, and shaking from five hours of running through the dark, wet train tunnels beneath New Oxford.

He did not care about the pain. He only cared about the heavy leather sack slung over his shoulder.

Inside that sack, something moved. It kicked and fought against the canvas, making a sharp scratching sound that echoed in the small, dusty room. Julian dropped the sack onto the wooden counter with a loud thud.

Old Man Marrow looked up from behind the counter. The old man had a long, deep scar running from his left eye down to his chin. He did not smile. He never smiled. He just stared at Julian with cloudy, cold eyes.

You are late, Julian, Marrow said. His voice sounded like dry leaves scraping across stone.

The train tunnels were full of shadow hounds tonight, Julian said, his breathing heavy and fast. He wiped sweat and rain from his forehead with the back of his bare wrist. I had to take the long way round. But I got it. Exactly what you asked for.

Marrow leaned forward, resting his bony hands on the wood. He reached out with long, yellow fingers and untied the wet rope around the top of the sack. He peeked inside.

A small, multi-eyed creature with grey fur hissed at him and tried to bite his thumb. Marrow slammed the sack shut with a smirk.

A live tunnel crawler, Marrow said, nodding slowly. Not many men have the guts to catch one of these with their bare hands. Your sister must mean a lot to you.

She is dying, Marrow, Julian said, his voice dropping low. Real fear tightened his chest. "You promised. Five years of running jobs for you. Five years of bleeding in the dark. You said tonight I get the medicine. Give it to me.

Marrow did not move fast. He slowly reached under the counter and pulled out a small glass bottle. Inside the bottle, a thick, silver liquid glowed with a faint, steady light. It looked like liquid stars trapped in glass.

Julian stared at it. His heart pounded hard against his ribs. Five years. Five long years of pain, cold nights, and broken bones had all led to this exact second. If he took this bottle home, his younger sister Maya would finally sit up, breathe easy, and be safe.

Take it, Marrow said, pushing the small glass bottle across the dusty counter. "The silver drop. One spoonful a day for three days, and her sickness will be gone forever. She will be as healthy as a horse.

Julian reached out with trembling fingers. His skin brushed the cold glass. He let out a long breath he felt like he had been holding for years. He picked up the bottle and held it tight in his palm.

"Thank you, Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. I am done. I am never coming back to this shop.

Marrow gave a dry, quiet laugh that sounded like paper ripping. People like you never leave, Julian. You think you are free just because you finished a job? You do not know anything about your own family.

Julian froze. What are you talking about?

Before Marrow could answer, the front window of the pawnshop exploded inward.

Glass shattered into a million sharp pieces, flying across the room like tiny stars. A heavy wave of hot air knocked Julian off his feet. He hit the floor hard, dropping the glass bottle. It rolled across the wooden floorboards, but thankfully it did not break.

Julian scrambled to his feet, coughing as thick grey smoke filled the small room. He pulled a small iron knife from his belt and spun around to face the broken doorway.

Through the cloud of smoke and dust, a tall woman stepped inside.

She wore a long, dark grey coat with silver buttons shaped like open eyes. Her dark hair was pulled back into a tight, neat bun. Her face was cold, sharp, and completely calm, like carved stone.

Commander Eleanor Vance.

Julian knew that face. He had seen pictures of her locked away in his parents' old wooden chest. Eleanor was his aunt, but she was also the head of the Vance family's elite enforcers, a group of ruthless people who controlled the hidden magical underworld of New Oxford.

Julian, Eleanor said. Her voice was smooth, quiet, and deadly. Put the knife down. You look ridiculous.

Stay back, Eleanor, Julian said, keeping his hand steady on the iron weapon. I don't work for the family anymore. I don't want anything to do with you or your rules.

Eleanor looked around the messy pawnshop, then looked back at Julian with a look of deep pity. It made Julian's blood boil.

You think you have been playing a hero, Eleanor said, taking a slow step forward. You think you spent five years running dangerous errands just to buy medicine for a poor, sick little sister who cannot even stand up on her own.

She is sick, Julian yelled, his voice cracking with sudden panic. I see her cough up black blood every single morning!

She is not sick, Julian, Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the noise of the rain outside. "Maya is not dying. She is the boss of the Red Syndicate. She faked her illness five years ago to trick you into doing her dirty work, and you fell for it every single day."

Julian stood completely still. The words hit him harder than a physical blow. The world seemed to tilt sideways.

You are lying, Julian whispered, shaking his head. Maya is sweet. She is scared. She needs me. Does she? Eleanor asked. She raised her hand and snapped her fingers.

A bright blue light flashed in the air beside her, forming a glowing screen made of pure magic. Images appeared on the screen. It showed a large underground warehouse lit by red neon lights. Scores of dangerous criminals stood at attention, bowing to a single figure sitting on a throne made of old iron and bone.

The figure turned around.

It was Maya. She was smiling, but it was not the sweet, weak smile she gave Julian every morning when he brought her soup. Her eyes were cold, bright, and full of a cruel, terrifying power. She laughed as a man begged for his life at her feet.

Julian stared at the screen. His breath stopped in his throat. The bottle of medicine in his pocket felt heavy, hot, and suddenly fake.

She used you, Julian, Eleanor said softly, stepping closer. "You were her best thief. Her shield. Her loyal pawn. And now that she has what she needs from this shop, she is planning to kill every single member of our family, starting with you.

Before Julian could answer, the floor beneath his feet began to shake. A deep, loud roar echoed from deep under the earth, shaking the walls of the pawnshop.

Outside the broken window, the dark rainy street suddenly lit up with bright purple fire.

Julian looked down at his hands, then at the glowing screen, and finally out into the burning street. His entire life was a lie. Everything he fought for, every drop of blood he spilled, was just a game played by his own sister.

Suddenly, a sharp, cold blade pressed hard against the back of Julian's neck.

Don't move, boy, a rough voice whispered right beside his ear.

Julian looked sideways out of the corner of his eye. Old Man Marrow stood right behind him, holding a long, rusted steel dagger against his skin. The old man's cloudy eyes were wide and wild, smiling a terrible, sharp smile.

The loop is closed,"Marrow whispered softly. Welcome to the end, Julian.
