The courtroom had never been this full.

Judge Alvarez didn’t wait for the room to settle. She looked tired, the kind of tired that came from a case that had eaten months of her life, and when she finally spoke, her voice carried through the silence like a shot.

“In the matter of the State versus Nathan Reeds — this court finds the defendant not guilty on all counts. The conviction is quashed, effective immediately.”

For a second nobody moved. Then the gallery broke.

The evening sun was settling low and red over the garden of Mrs Salvador’s mansion and it fell across Nathan and Nelson’s faces in a way that neither of them rushed to move away from. After years of iron bars and institutional walls and the particular kind of noise that never fully stopped in a prison no matter what time of night it was, this place was something different entirely. The sound of water running somewhere at the far end of the garden. Birds in the trees that lined the property. The kind of quiet that didn't press on you but simply existed around you, letting you breathe inside it. They were not wearing prison clothes. That alone felt like something worth sitting still for. Nelson picked up his coffee and leaned back in his chair. “Mrs Salvador used to talk about you every time we were together. She would always get emotional. She told me the house felt completely empty when you were not in it.” Nathan looked at the sun and smiled slowly. Then the smile became a qui

The conviction is quashed, effective immediately.” For a second nobody moved. Then the gallery broke. Someone in the back started crying. A reporter dropped his pen. Nathan sat frozen at the defense table like the words hadn’t reached him yet, like his body was waiting for permission to believe it. Claire’s hand found his shoulder before he even turned around. “You’re free,” she said. “Nathan. You’re free.” He didn’t answer. He just closed his eyes. The judge let the noise run for a moment before she brought the gavel down again, sharp enough to cut through it. “Order. I’m not finished.” The room quiete

  • CHAPTER 103: The Butler Returns

The judge raised her hand one final time. Eight hours of proceedings had worn her voice down to something thinner than it had started, but something in it still commanded the room the way it had from the beginning. “And finally. We have a late witness connected to the Reeds family.” She looked toward the entrance. “Mr Edmund. Please come in.” Before his name had fully settled in the air Nelson and John had already turned toward the door at the same time. The same instinct pulled both their heads in the same direction. They had spent months trying to find this man. Months of dead ends and close calls and Karlus getting there first and still somehow missing him. And now here he was. Walking through the door of a courtroom like he had simply been waiting for the right moment and had decided this was it. Edmund looked different from what any description had prepared them for. His white hair carried the kind of weight that only came from years lived fully and without apology. The su

  • CHAPTER 102: The Devils Offer

Lisa had not moved from the side of the bed.Her head was resting against the edge of the mattress and the sheet beneath her face was wet in a way she had not noticed until she finally lifted her head and saw it. She had been crying for longer than she realised. The crying that happened quietly and kept going after you thought it had stopped. She looked at Kyler’s face.Even in this state. Even lying here with machines beside him and tubes and the pallor of someone who had given most of themselves away on a garage floor. There was something on his face that had not left. A stillness that was not the stillness of defeat. More like someone who had finished what they set out to do and had made their peace with the cost of it.She thought about the things he used to say to her.She had always dismissed them. Filed them under stubbornness or naivety or the particular blindness of someone who had not yet been in the world long enough to understand how it actually worked.Looking at him now

  • CHAPTER 101: Blood Of The Parks

Kyler noticed the van before he could explain why it made him uneasy. It was moving too slowly. Not the slow of a driver looking for parking or checking an address. The deliberate slowness of something that was tracking a specific target and had no reason to rush because the target had nowhere to go.He moved away from the road slightly. The van adjusted. That was when his body decided before his mind caught up. His legs picked up pace and his heart followed immediately, beating faster than his footsteps as he moved toward the car park entrance ahead. If he could get inside and reach the back exit he had a chance. He glanced at the van once.Five men visible through the windscreen. Built the way men were built when their job required it. Their faces carried the specific blankness of people given an instruction and no personal feelings about carrying it out.Kyler ran.His legs felt light the way legs felt when fear took over from muscle and pushed everything past its normal limit. The

  • CHAPTER 100: The Files in the Blue Folder

The air inside the main corridor of the courthouse felt colder than usual, stripped of the manic energy that had filled the morning sessions. Inside the courtroom, the low hum of shifting bodies and murmurs came to an abrupt halt as the heavy oak doors swung open once more.Kyler walked down the center aisle alone. In his right hand, he carried a worn, faded blue folder—its edges frayed, its surface scrawled with faded archive numbers. Every eye in the gallery tracked his movement. He didn't look at the press, nor did he look toward the bench. His focus remained fixed entirely on the defense table where Nelson sat."Your Honor," Kyler said, his voice level as he stopped before the bar. "The court has spent weeks listening to carefully curated narratives regarding the lost shipments, the insurance defaults, and the alleged armed interception orchestrated by Nelson. What has been presented up to this point is a collection of forged manifestations."He opened the blue folder, laying the
