The Fourth Secret
The message on Ethan Carter's phone refused to disappear. ONE OF YOU IS A TRAITOR. He stared at the words while the distant sound of police sirens grew louder. In front of him stood three women he had trusted for different reasons. His mother, Eleanor. His sister, Olivia. And Rachel Morgan, the woman who claimed she had spent seven years protecting him. One of them was lying. Maybe all three were. “Who is it?” Ethan finally asked. No one answered. His eyes moved from one face to another. “Which one of you is the traitor?” Rachel tightened her grip on her pistol. “We don't have time for this.” “We've never had time,” Ethan replied bitterly. “For seven years, everyone has been telling me to run, hide, forget, or trust them. I'm finished doing what other people tell me.” Eleanor stepped toward him. “Ethan, there are things you still don't understand.” “Then explain them.” “I will.” “Now.” A gunshot cracked somewhere outside. Everyone froze. Rachel immediately moved toward the window. “They've found us.” She looked back. “We have maybe two minutes.” Eleanor turned toward the burned remains of the house. “Then we use those two minutes wisely.” She walked to the old fireplace and removed a loose brick. Behind it was a narrow metal compartment. Eleanor pulled out a weathered steel box. Ethan stared at it. “What is that?” “Your past.” She opened the box. Inside were photographs, documents, handwritten notes, and a small cassette recorder. Ethan picked up one photograph. Five people stood around a conference table. He recognized four. Eleanor. Daniel Reed. Marcus Hale. And his former employer. The fifth person's face had been deliberately scratched away. “Who is this?” Eleanor's expression changed. “The person who destroyed everything.” Ethan turned the photograph over. “Who?” “You aren't ready.” His patience snapped. “Stop saying that!” His voice echoed through the room. “You told me my mother was dead. You told me Daniel was dead. You told me my memories were damaged. Then I discovered I erased them myself. Now I find out my father may still be alive.” He threw the photograph onto the table. “How much more of my life is a lie?” Eleanor looked at him with tears in her eyes. “Almost all of it.” The answer silenced him. Eleanor picked up the cassette recorder. “I hoped you'd never have to hear this.” She pressed PLAY. A younger version of Eleanor's voice filled the room. “If Ethan ever hears this recording, Meridian has already found him.” Ethan exchanged a glance with Olivia. The recording continued. “I created Meridian to expose corruption. At first, we were journalists, investigators, financial experts, and honest police officers. We collected evidence against people who believed they were untouchable.” The voice paused. “Then power changed us.” The tape crackled. “People stopped joining Meridian to expose corruption. They joined because they wanted influence. Eventually, the organization became more powerful than the criminals it was created to fight.” Ethan looked at Eleanor. “Who took control?” Eleanor didn't answer immediately. Then she whispered: “Your father.” Ethan's expression hardened. “My father died before I was born.” “No.” The word came quietly. “He didn't.” Ethan felt the floor shift beneath him. “My entire life…” Eleanor nodded. “Richard Carter is alive.” Olivia lowered her eyes. Ethan turned toward her. “You knew?” Olivia swallowed. “I found out two years ago.” “And you said nothing.” “I was trying to protect you.” “You all use that excuse.” He looked toward Rachel. “What about you?” Rachel removed the silver necklace from around her neck. The triangle symbol caught the dim light. “I worked for Meridian.” Ethan's hand moved toward his weapon. Rachel continued quickly. “I was an investigator. Daniel recruited me after he discovered Meridian had been infiltrated from the inside.” “You're asking me to believe you were undercover?” “No.” She looked directly at him. “I'm asking you to believe that Daniel trusted me.” Before Ethan could respond, the windows exploded inward. Rachel tackled him to the floor. Bullets tore through the walls. “Move!” They ran toward the fireplace. Marcus Hale's voice thundered from outside. “Eleanor Carter! Your son is not going anywhere!” Ethan stopped. Marcus continued. “Ethan, you deserve to know who your family really is.” Ethan shouted back. “Come inside and tell me!” Marcus laughed. “You'll learn soon enough.” Eleanor opened a hidden panel behind the fireplace. A narrow passage appeared. “Inside,” she ordered. They rushed into the tunnel. Eleanor sealed the entrance behind them. The underground passage smelled of damp earth and smoke. After several minutes, it opened into a hidden chamber. Ethan looked around. A large monitor covered one wall. Without warning, it flickered on. Daniel Reed appeared on the screen. His face was bruised. His shirt was stained with blood. But his eyes were clear. “Ethan.” Ethan stepped closer. “Where are you?” “Somewhere you can't reach.” “Who has you?” Daniel ignored the question. “You've been asking the wrong question for seven years.” “What question should I be asking?” “Why did you choose to forget?” Ethan's jaw tightened. “I know I chose it.” “No.” Daniel leaned toward the camera. “You chose the first memory wipe.” Ethan froze. “The first?” Daniel nodded. “Someone altered your memory again after that.” Ethan looked at Olivia. She began crying. Daniel continued. “Your sister knows who did it.” Ethan turned toward Olivia. “Who?” She couldn't answer. Daniel's expression darkened. “Your mother.” Silence. Ethan slowly turned toward Eleanor. “You erased my memories?” “I had no choice.” “You always have a choice.” “Not when your life is at stake.” Daniel continued. “Seven years ago, Ethan discovered something Meridian desperately needed.” “What?” “You were the only person who could access the organization's central archive.” Ethan frowned. “How?” “Your father designed the security system around you.” The room went silent. “Why me?” “Because your memories contain the encryption.” Ethan felt cold. “You're saying my memories are a key?” “Yes.” Daniel looked toward the camera. “And Richard is coming for you.” The screen suddenly went black. A heavy silence followed. Then the chamber door opened. Eleanor raised her gun. A tall man stepped inside. Gray hair. Dark coat. Calm expression. Ethan's heart began pounding. He had never seen the man before. Yet something deep inside him recognized him. The stranger smiled. “Hello, Ethan.” Eleanor aimed her weapon. “Stay away from him.” The man looked at her. “You've kept him from me long enough.” Ethan stared. “Who are you?” The man's smile faded. “You really don't remember.” Eleanor's voice trembled. “Ethan…” The man stepped forward. “My name is Richard Carter.” Ethan's breathing stopped. His father. Alive. Richard looked at him almost proudly. “You've grown up.” Ethan raised his gun. “Why did you let me believe you were dead?” “Because dead men are difficult to find.” “And what do you want from me?” “Something you took from me seven years ago.” “What?” “Access.” Richard's eyes hardened. “You have the key to Meridian's archive inside your mind.” Ethan shook his head. “I'll never help you.” Richard smiled. “You already did.” He pulled a photograph from his coat. Ethan took it. His hands began trembling. The photograph showed a younger Ethan standing beside Daniel and Rachel. Rachel was holding a newborn baby. Ethan stared at the child. Something inside him cracked. A memory surfaced. A hospital corridor. A baby crying. Rachel screaming. Daniel running toward them. Ethan carrying the newborn. Then a man taking the child from him. The memory vanished. Ethan staggered. “Who is that?” Rachel's face turned white. Richard answered. “Your daughter.” Ethan stared at him. “I don't have a daughter.” “You did.” Rachel's eyes filled with tears. Ethan looked at her. “Why didn't you tell me?” “Because you asked me to forget.” The words struck him harder than a gunshot. Richard continued. “Seven years ago, your daughter disappeared.” Ethan's voice broke. “Who took her?” Richard smiled. “You did.” “No.” “You handed her over.” Ethan grabbed his head as another memory surfaced. A woman's voice. A locked door. Daniel shouting: “Ethan, don't do this!” And Ethan whispering: “She'll be safer without me.” The memory disappeared. Ethan looked at Richard in horror. “You're lying.” “Am I?” A gunshot suddenly rang through the chamber. Richard stumbled. Eleanor stood behind him, gun in hand. “Run!” Ethan stared at his mother. Richard fell to one knee. But instead of fear, he smiled. He looked at Ethan. “Ask your mother where your daughter is.” Then the lights went out. Complete darkness swallowed the chamber. Ethan heard Olivia scream. Rachel shouted his name. Then came the sound of footsteps. Slow. Small. Bare feet against the concrete floor. Ethan turned. A tiny hand slipped into his. He froze. A child's voice whispered from the darkness. “Daddy?” Ethan couldn't breathe. The voice continued softly: “Why did you leave me?” The emergency lights flickered back on. Ethan looked down. A little girl stood beside him. She had his eyes. And around her neck hung a silver necklace bearing the symbol of Meridian. Eleanor covered her mouth. Olivia began to cry. Rachel lowered her weapon. And Ethan finally understood the cruelest truth of all: The secret he had spent seven years trying to recover wasn't about Daniel. It wasn't about Meridian. It wasn't even about his missing memories. It was about the child standing beside him. A child he had once loved enough to erase himself from her life. The girl looked up at Ethan. “Daddy…” Then she whispered: “Mommy said you're not supposed to remember me.” Ethan slowly looked at Rachel. Rachel's face collapsed. And behind her, the chamber door quietly locked itself.Latest Chapter
The Last Memory
The Last MemoryThe hospital speakers went silent. For several seconds, nobody moved. The last words Amelia had spoken remained suspended in the air like a threat that had not yet decided whether it wanted to become a promise.“The third world has begun.”Lily stared at the photograph on the wall.It had already burned away, leaving only a dark rectangular stain. But she could still see the woman's face in her mind.Amelia.Her mother.A woman Lily had mourned for most of her life.A woman who had supposedly died before Lily was old enough to understand what death meant.Yet Amelia had spoken to them. She was alive. And she had known they would come.Rachel slowly lowered her weapon.“Everyone stay calm.”Daniel looked at the tablet in his hands.“Calm isn't really an option anymore.”“What are you seeing?” Rachel asked.Daniel's fingers moved rapidly across the screen.“The network is still active.”“What network?”“The Mirror.”Lily turned toward him.“I thought it was destroyed.”“
The Man Behind the Memory
The Man Behind the MemoryThe hospital went dark. For several seconds, Lily could hear nothing except her own heartbeat. Then Ethan's voice came through the darkness.“Lily…”She turned toward him.“Dad?”No answer.A red emergency light flickered on.Ethan stood in the center of the corridor. His eyes were black. The Mirror symbol covered his hands, spreading slowly up his arms like dark veins.Around him, hundreds of patients stood motionless.Every face was turned toward Lily.Rachel raised her weapon.“Lily, get behind me.”Lily didn't move.“That isn't my father.”Ethan smiled. The smile wasn't his.“No,” he said.“I am what he tried to forget.”Helen Carter stood at the end of the corridor. Her expression was strangely calm.“Welcome to St. Mary's.”Lily stared at her.“You knew this would happen.”Helen nodded.“I've been waiting for this moment for twenty-nine years.”Rachel aimed her weapon at her.“What are you?”Helen looked at Ethan.“A mother.”Then she looked at Lily.“A
St. Mary's
St. Mary'sThe message remained on the screen.ETHAN CARTER IS WAITING.Lily stared at it without blinking. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then Sarah whispered, “That isn't possible.”Daniel turned toward her.“Why?”Sarah looked at the coordinates.“Because St. Mary's wasn't just destroyed.”She swallowed.“It was erased.”Rachel frowned.“Buildings don't get erased.”“This one did.”Sarah pointed at the screen.“After the first Mirror event, every record connected to St. Mary's disappeared. Patient files. Staff records. Photographs. Government documents.”Daniel stared at the database.“That explains why I couldn't find a complete record.”Lily stepped closer.“But I was born there.”“Yes.”“And my father disappeared there.”Sarah nodded.“That's what everyone was told.”Lily looked at her.“What really happened?”Sarah didn't answer.Lily's voice hardened.“Mom.”Sarah closed her eyes.“Your father didn't disappear from St. Mary's.”“He was taken.”“By whom?”“By us.”The room
The Forgotten Son
The Forgotten SonThe lake exploded.A wall of water crashed toward the laboratory.Ethan grabbed Lily and pulled her backward.Rachel shouted:“MOVE!”Everyone ran toward the tunnel.Behind them, the enormous structure rose from the lake.It was neither machine nor living creature. It was something in between.Metal plates covered a body made of translucent tissue. Hundreds of cables extended from its back and disappeared beneath the water. At the center was a face.Ethan's face. But impossibly old.The eyes opened. And every screen in the laboratory displayed the same message:MEMORY ENTITY: ACTIVEDaniel stared at the readings.“What is that?”Ethan shook his head.“I don't know.”The entity spoke again.“You know me.”Ethan stopped.“No.”“You have forgotten me.”“Who are you?”The entity's face changed. For a moment, Ethan saw his own mother. Then his brother. Then Lily. Then himself. Finally, it became the face of a young boy.Ethan froze. His brother. As a child. The entity spo
The First World
The First WorldDarkness swallowed the laboratory. For several seconds, there was nothing. No voices. No machines. No footsteps.Only the sound of Ethan Carter breathing. Then a light appeared.A single white point in the darkness. It expanded slowly until Ethan found himself standing beside a lake. The same lake. But not the same world. The water was clear. The sky was blue. The old Carter house stood untouched among green trees. There was no Meridian tower. No Mirror Network. No resistance. No war.No ruins.Ethan turned around.Rachel was gone. His brother was gone.Richard was gone.Lily was gone.He was alone.Or so he thought.A child was standing near the water.Ethan recognized him immediately.Himself.Eight years old.Young Ethan was throwing stones into the lake.Another boy sat nearby. His brother. They were laughing.Ethan watched them silently. Then a woman's voice came from behind him.“You wanted to know who destroyed the first world.”Ethan turned.Eleanor Carter stoo
The Memory Beneath the Lake
The Memory Beneath the LakeThe lake moved. Not with the wind. Not with the current.Something beneath its black surface was breathing.Ethan Carter stood at the edge of the water, staring at the glowing symbol on his palm. The Mirror. It pulsed like a second heartbeat.Lily stood beside him.“What did Eleanor do to you?”Ethan looked at his hand.“I don't know.”Rachel approached cautiously.“Then we need to find out before she takes control.”Ethan looked toward the lake.“She already has.”A deep vibration passed through the ground.Daniel checked his equipment.“That's not possible.”“What?”“The lake has no underground machinery.”Another vibration.Stronger this time. The old house trembled.Ethan closed his eyes. And suddenly he saw it.A corridor beneath the water.A metal door.A child standing behind glass.A woman holding a newborn. Then a voice:Remember.Ethan opened his eyes.“There is a facility beneath the lake.”Daniel stared at him.“How do you know?”“I saw it.”Rac
