Mateo did not look back again until the maintenance door disappeared around the corner.

“Keep moving,” he told the group. “Stay together, and don't stop unless the person in front of you stops.”

The narrow service lane offered little room for mistakes. Abandoned vehicles blocked sections of the pavement, forcing the group to move in single file. The injured walked between volunteers, while Marcos kept the slower members from falling behind.

Nobody spoke about the clicking.

Lucía noticed the way his eyes had stopped moving. “You are looking at something, what is going on?”“It's the system” even as he spoke to her, he still had his eyes staring “It is asking me to continue’“Continue what exactly?”“I do not know yet”She crouched in front of him as she furrowed her brows “since you don't know what this is about, then don't answer it. We have not even tested what it does yet”Mateo understood her fear, and part of him shared it Yet he remembered the first life, where the trait had been a wound and nothing more. Now it was offering him something, and a chance like this might never return.“If I refuse, I may never learn what it is,” he whispered. “Staying ignorant is also a risk”Lucía opened her mouth but was not even sure what to say now, she massaged her temples and let out a long sigh. “Then I will stay right here, If your nose bleeds again or I notice any other complications,

The receiver screen lit up by itself as Mateo raised his head and stared at it.“Everyone away from the entrance” He raised both palms. “Take the injured to the back room”He gave the command, and at that moment Marcos tightened his grip on the wrench.“You want us trapped in a room with just one door?”“I want us to have time” Mateo wiped the sweat from his forehead. “Because Running into the street will only feed it”Marcos clenched his jaw, He clearly did not like the idea, yet he began waving the volunteers toward the back. The injured stranger clasped his arm. “It is under the floor, I can hear it” He whispered while gasping for breath. “What is your name?” Mateo crouched in front of him and kept his expression gentle.“Hugo”“Hugo, how long has it been following you?”“I think ten minutes, maybe less” Hugo swallowed, trying to save his breath. “Every corner I turned, the sound turned with me”Lucía knelt beside the receiver, her brows pulled tight. “The signal is rising too fa

Nobody spoke about the clicking. They had all heard it. Mateo could see the question on Lucía's face, but she waited until they had reached the end of the lane before asking it. “What did the system mean by observation status: active?” “I don't know.” “Was it referring to you?” “The message said subject response was confirmed. That could mean me, or it could mean the anomalous pattern.” “Could it be referring to the people in this group?” “Possibly.” Lucía frowned. “You're not helping.” “I'd rather admit I don't know than give you an a

  • Chapter 013: The Evacuation That Went Wrong

“Everyone out. Leave the heavy supplies behind.”Marcos's voice carried across the parking structure, cutting through the frightened conversations. He had stopped trying to reassure people that the shelter was safe. After the third knock from beneath the floor, nobody needed convincing that something was wrong.Mateo stood beside the western ramp, watching the evacuation take shape.“Take the injured first,” he told Marcos. “Then the children and anyone who needs assistance. Keep the groups small enough to move quickly.”“And where are we going?”Mateo hesitated. In his previous life, the municipal sports center had become a temporary refuge during the first days of the Awakening. It had survived the initial disturbances, but he couldn't remember exactly when the survivors had abandoned it. His memories were incomplete, blurred by years of hardship and the trauma of losing his mana channels. He remembered a public school several streets west. Its courtyard had offered space for hundre

Lucía knelt several feet from the crack and switched on her sensor. The display flickered twice before producing a reading. “I'm detecting the same energy signature as the transit station,” she said. “But it's much stronger here.” “Could the source be directly underneath us?” Mateo asked. “Possibly. Or the signal could be passing through the ground from another location. These readings don't tell me which.” “Can you determine whether it's causing the structural damage?” “Not yet.” Mateo looked toward the damaged floor. “What would you need?” “Time, a stable reading, and equipment I don't have.” She glanced at him. “Preferably without a mysterious system anomaly interfering with every measurement.” Despite the tension, Mateo almost smiled. “Let me know when you find one.” “I'll put it on my list.” Lucía moved to a safer position and compared the latest readings with the records she had collected from the eastern road. Sofía stood nearby, recording the crack's sha

The ground shook again before Mateo reached the barricade.A crack raced across the road behind him, splitting the asphalt with a sound like breaking glass. Blue light spilled through the opening, illuminating the abandoned cars and the frightened faces of people gathering near the shelter entrance.“Keep moving!” Mateo shouted. “Nobody approaches the road!”The maintenance technician stumbled over a broken curb. Lucía caught his shoulder and helped him regain his balance.Behind them, the damaged shop groaned. Its front window shattered completely, scattering glass across the pavement. Something moved inside, fast enough that Mateo caught only a dark shape crossing the room. Then the clicking began again.Three short sounds.A pause.Three more. The same pattern they had heard beneath the transit station.Mateo forced himself to look away. The connection message still burned in his memory.CONNECTION ESTABLISHED.He had no idea what it meant, but one thing was clear: whatever was hap
