CHAPTER THREE

“Take this.” Isaac hands over a gold credit card to Edwin. “Inside that account is unlimited amount of money. You can get yourself whatever you like but I hope you don’t squander it.”

Edwin stared at the gold card and then at Max and they smiled simultaneously. Being given a gold credit card meant that Edwin wasn’t just rich, he was super rich.

Isaac walked away and head into his car without saying anything further. “Be cautious on the road uncle.” He said as the man entered his black Bentley and drove off afterwards.

Edwin was thinking about the amount of money that his uncle had sent to him. He pulled out his phone as Max returned into his house and decide to check the credit score of the card. “Ah!” He screamed seeing the enormous amount that has been given to him.

His hand was shaking and his face was sweating really profusely. “What happened?” Max asked rushing back out of the house. 

“I…I… This…” Edwin could not say any proper word. He hands over the phone to Max who takes a look at the money and also held a shock on his face.

“A whooping Twenty billion dollars! This must be some sort of dream. I am dreaming Max, just slap my face so I can wake up from this dream.” 

“I can’t believe my eyes man. That is a huge amount of money. Edwin you are rich!” He screamed, shaking Edwin’s shoulder aggressively and out of sheer happiness. 

Edwin was happy as he looked at his friend Max. Never in his entire life would he think that he was going to earn a whole lot of money like that. His salary as a body guard was peanut change because he was working part time. 

Edwin alternated between hotels while working. He was working both night and day shift and despite his hard work, he still had no money to show for it.

“I am so happy that you finally have real money Edwin. This means that you don’t need to be living in that miserable hut that you call a house. Neither do you have to beg Valerie to take you back. You have wealth now and a bright future to come.” Max explained with excitement in his voice.

“Ofcourse. It is my enernest desire that I prove to that girl that I have a bright future. I am going to show Valerie what it means to hold real money.”

Edwin was about to walk out of the room but Max held him back.  “Don’t rush to make decision Edwin. This money is a huge one and I understand it can make anyone crazy but you have to be wise. Don’t take Valerie back into your life, she is a gold digger.”

Edwin agreed with what his friend said to him. If he returned back to Valerie, she might just leave Joelington and come for him. It has always been about the money for her.

Edwin was glad that everything that transpired between the both of them happened when he had no money. “I am really grateful Edwin. Thank you for everything. You are a great friend.”

“You owe me a favor.” Max replied with a big smile.

“Of course. I understand that this is my money but it doesn’t mean that I am going to leave you without helping.” Edwin replied and pats his back.

“We are going to enjoy this moment together.” He added.

After their conversation, Edwin and Max decided to go and have dinner together.  They chose a very luxurious restaurant. 

Edwin and Max were enjoying themselves and having a good time. Edwin was excited because while they were in the restaurant, he had seen one of his cousins.

At first Edwin thought the boy was simply trying to get close to him because of the money but he realized he was telling the truth. 

Edwin was slowly realizing one lesson and that is that money never mattered in the Maverick family. It was just being a great family member that stood out. “How did you know that my uncle was coming to your house.” Edwin asked as he and Max were halfway through their special meal.

“Do you know that I called your uncle?”

“You are joking. There is no way you called him.” Edwin replied with surprise.

“To be honest with you, I did not know what was happening too. During that time, one of the young women of the orphanage home where you stay since your childhood called my phone and asked about you.”

“All this happened when I passed out?” 

Max nods his head and scoop a large piece of meat in his fork and munched it, closing his eyes and savoring the taste.

While they are still eating, Edwin’s eyes landed on a familiar face.  It was Robin, one of his fellow co worker with another woman by his side.

When their eyes connected, Robin gasped in shock and excused himself to walk over to their table. “Am I dreaming?” He asked as he came across their table. “Edwin eating in Clifford Restaurant?”

“Hello to you Robin.” Edwin muttered beneath his breath.

There has never been a time that he has hidden his dislike for Robin. Even though they had the same job, Robin was always going out with some of the rich women in the city and that is how he made his living.

Thinking about it, Edwin was ashamed of himself that he ever wished to be like him. “I am guessing it is this gentle man that brought you here. Because there is no way you can afford their meal.” He said playfully.

“Why don’t you just shut up and move along.” Max replied with anger in his face.

“Wo! Wo! Hold on a bit young man. Have some respect.” Robin said, startled by Max’s outburst.

“It is okay Maxwell.” Edwin replied placing his palm on his friend. “Yes, my friend brought me out here to eat.”

Robin laughed for a moment. “I knew you are too poor to avoid it.” He replied and then walked away.

“You really need to start cutting a lot of people from your life right now that you are rich.” Max mentioned the moment Robin walked away. Edwin was going to do well with the advice.
