The room fell silent for a moment, no one saying anything. Jeremy had stopped in his tracks, but he was now close to Sarah.
"Are you sure about this?" Sarah's gentle voice came after a long moment of silence.
The slight hesitation within her could be felt.
"Yes, I am," Jeremy answered, sounding rather firm, his gaze locked on Sarah.
"And what would you do after seeing my face?" Sarah questioned, still not turning around.
But one could see her fingers tightened around the hem of her clothes.
"Well..." Jeremy stuttered, trying to find the right words to use, but he just couldn't find them.
"You don't need to be confused; everyone was like that, believing they could stand the sight of me before they saw my face," Sarah chuckled lightly, the self-deprecation within those chuckles could be felt.
"It's better you leave, just go on; I won't restrict your movements; after a month we'll get our divorce," Sarah continued, a gentle sniff sounded beneath the veil.
"You don't need to worry about that," Jeremy sighed, realizing the problem was far bigger than he had thought it was.
Years of abuse and insult due to the scar on her face had left her scarred and unwilling to show her face to anyone.
"I think the best thing in this situation is for you to turn and let me take a look at your face; perhaps, I might have a way to treat you," Jeremy spoke, his voice a bit low.
Hearing Jeremy's words, Sarah's body froze and it was as though she had been hit by a bolt of lightning.
Treat her face? Who the heck was he kidding?
She had visited several famous doctors in the past and yet none of them said they could treat it.
Even with plastic surgery, her face would never be the same, so that feeling of hope had long been extinguished.
"But..."
"Because the doctors said it was not treatable didn't mean I wouldn't be able to," Jeremy shrugged, interrupting Sarah, who was about to say something.
Beneath the veil, Sarah's hand tightened against the hem of her dress. Deeply, she yearned for treatment.
She wanted a day when she could look up into the sky where she wouldn't be able to hide her face.
But then this husband of hers claimed he could treat her. She had looked into him before the marriage.
He was just an illegitimate son of the Raven family who was banished to the wasteland five years ago and was brought back today because of the marriage.
As for what he had gone through in the wasteland, she had no idea of it.
If only her elder brother were here. Then just maybe the family wouldn't treat her this way.
After all, when he was still around, no one dared to mess with her. She couldn't help but wonder where her brother had gone.
Five years back, he had also left home to the wasteland to make a name for himself. He would occasionally call to check up on her.
But all of a sudden, a few years back, he stopped contacting, and she couldn't reach him either.
"Brother..." Sarah muttered under her breath, her eyes cloudy as a figure appeared in her mind.
"Please come back," she whispered softly, her voice cracking a bit as she wiped away the tear that managed to streak down her face.
"So what do you say?" Jeremy's voice came, pulling Sarah out of her thoughts.
"I... I..." Sarah stammered, struggling to make a decision.
"Fine... fine... I'll trust you..." She finally agreed, even though at the same time, hesitation was still written all over her face.
"Good," Jeremy stepped forward, closing the distance once again.
"Turn around and remove your veil," he said, a slight anticipation hidden within his voice as he thought about something.
Sarah fell silent for a moment; her heavy breathing filled the room as she hesitated; the hands on the hem of her dress were clenched even tighter.
Jeremy stood in place, watching without saying a word.
After a long moment of silence, Sarah slowly turned around, her head lowered.
After another long moment of hesitation, she finally started to remove the veil; her hands were shaky as she struggled not to stop.
Her fingers clenched, and a tear at the corner of her lips was threatening to drop.
Jeremy watched closely, his gaze fixed on her face as the veil dropped little by little.
After it was all gone, the face fell into his view and his pupils constricted almost immediately.
One side of her face looked as though it had been swallowed by flames, the skin severely charred and scarred beyond recognition.
The mouth, the skin covering her ears, a part of the nose, and even a part of her head was all burnt.
It was a miracle it somehow avoided her eyes.
What the heck was happening? How did she get injured to this extent? Who the hell was so cruel to have done this to her?
"Can you treat it?" Sarah's low voice broke the silence, pulling Jeremy back to his senses.
"Yes, I can," Jeremy coughed slightly, coming back to his senses.
"Huh?" Sarah's eyes lit up hearing what Jeremy said.
"Are you just trying to cheer me up?" Sarah's smile vanished as she raised her head, staring at Jeremy.
"I'm not," Jeremy shook his head.
He had seen cases far worse than this, so there was no way he wouldn't be able to treat it. Not to brag, before tomorrow, he would be able to restore her face.
After all, back in the wasteland, he wasn't merely the Mercenary King; he had another title: Divine Hand.
"If I may ask, how did you get this injured?" Jeremy asked, his gaze settling on Sarah's face once again.
"In a fire," Sarah answered, her head down.
"Fire?" Jeremy's pupils constricted once again, his heart thumping against his chest at this point.
"Yes," Sarah smiled, nodding.
"I rushed in to save someone who had risked his life to save others and in the end was trapped inside the fire himself," she concluded; at this point, the smile on her face widened as she genuinely seemed happy.

Jeremy raised his brows, looking at Jasper."Yes, sir; don't you know, it was his granddaughter the government hired us to save," Jasper answered, nodding."But since you didn't come with us, he didn't see you, so he didn't know who you were," Jeremy carried on."Also, he's the head of the Ravencroft family, Jacob Ravencroft.""Oh," Jeremy nodded and then turned away, letting Jasper ask the old man what he wanted to.Jacob, on the other hand, felt his heart was about to burst out of his chest.Th

He didn't really have any spare clothes. The Raven family had made sure to throw the one he wore the day before away. So he had no other choice but to keep wearing it."Besides, I got married yesterday," Jeremy added, a grin spreading onto his face."Married?" "Huh?" Sarah blinked, not believing her ears."Grandmother, I don't quite understand?" She frowned, her expression already darkening like the cloud."I said divorce him," Mabel repeated, not caring about the frown etched on Sarah's face."Why?" Mabel's brows narrowed as she stared at Sarah."He's just an illegitimate son of the Raven family, destined never to achieve anything in this life," she scoffed, her gaze landing on Jeremy."Divorce him and get married to Kelvin instead; that way the bond between our families would become even stronger," she urged, her tone laid with urgency."I'm sorry, but I can't do that," Sarah refused, shaking her head, her voice firm, leaving no room for arguments."What exactly do you see in a loser like him, huh?"
