CHAPTER 8

TIME OF RECKONING

Ava’s face turned pale

Jake looked at her in surprise.

Ethan wore a concealed smile.

David and Chris were nodding in agreement with what Emily said.

All the guests around who heard it were shocked.

“You can't do that, Emily!” Ava exclaimed.

“Yes, Ava, I can. I am not cancelling it or calling it off. But we have to talk. Listen, this empire was built by my grandfather with truth and honesty as the foundation.

We have a lot of stakeholders now. I can't just introduce someone I can't trust to the board of directors as a new partner. Anything could go wrong.

We need to address this whole issue between you and him.” Emily pointed at Ethan.

“What?! No. There is nothing between him and me now. He is my ex-husband and nothing more. That should not be a reason to affect our partnership. It's a private issue….” Ava tried to explain.

“Of course it is….” David interrupted.

“Your personal life also plays a major role in your business life. How can we trust millions of dollars to someone who was cheating on her husband? . We have to investigate this matter to the core before we can do anything,” David said.

All the other gentlemen seemed to agree with what David had said.

“You. You are the cause of all this,” Jake said angrily as he pointed an accusing finger at Ethan.

Ethan smiled mischievously as he looked at Jake.

Emily walked away from there and mounted the stage in the hall after taking a microphone.

The soft music that was playing in the background faded out.

“Excuse me, ladies and Gentlemen…” Emily spoke through the microphone.

Everyone stopped their business and turned around to the podium where Emily stood.

They all stood eagerly waiting for what she had to say.

To the other unsuspecting guests, the party was about to get started. But the few in the circle who had just witnessed the altercation between Ava, Ethan, Emily, and Mr David knew exactly what was going on.

“Once again, good evening, and thank you all for showing up for this celebration. I appreciate your gesture, and on behalf of the whole Winsor family and the entire WINSOR GROUP, I say we are very grateful.

Unfortunately, we will have to suspend the party this evening. The partnership with our prospective partner has been suspended, and further discussion has to be held with the board and members of the WINSOR GROUP to deliberate on whether or not we will be moving forward with the partnership…”

There was a murmur from the crowd and the guests as Emily relayed the information.

Emily continued addressing the guests.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused to you guys. However, in as much as the partnership has been suspended. The party still holds. Kindly treat yourself to the buffet available and the drinks in stock. I entreat you all to have fun. Thank you all for understanding,” Emily concluded.

There were partial cheers and murmurs from the crowd after Emily’s address.

Ava was angry. She nearly exploded.

"You stupid fool. You are the cause of this. You will regret this, I promise you,” Ava said angrily as she walked away.

“You, I will come for you. You will regret this, I promise.” Jake said angrily as she dashed away, following Ava

Emily came back to the small circle after her address. Some of the gentlemen had left after the scene, and they were left with only Mr David, Mr Chris, and Ethan, who were conversing.

“Hey, Ethan. Do you mind if I speak to you for a moment?” Emily said as she approached the three men.

Ethan quickly excused himself and went to Emily.

“Hey, I didn't mean to cause trouble. I didn't even know who you were until just a few moments ago. I am very sorry that you had to cancel all your plans because of me,” Ethan said apologetically.

“There is no problem. I would like to speak to you about something, but not now. Kindly give me your contact so I can reach you.” Emily requested

Ethan nodded.

He took Emily’s phone from her and dialled his number on it, handing it back to her.

Emily excused herself and left.

Ethan went back to Chris and David, who were waiting for him.

He joined them, and they motioned to go out.

“Dr Ethan, we really need to speak, and it's about what just happened. Something caught my ear,” David said.

“Very well then. Let's go to the car park then. I think we can talk there,” Ethan replied.

When they arrived at the entrance of the hall, Ava and Jake were standing there angrily, as if waiting for them.

Ethan knew at once that they were about to cause a scene outside and prepared himself for the insults and accusations that awaited him.

Just before Ava could even raise or point an accusing finger.

The loud sirens of an escort were heard, and almost immediately, two motorbike escorts arrived, followed by a black sedan.

The sedan looked familiar to Ethan.

There were a lot of guests outside as some of them were about to leave. When the door of the sedan was opened, a middle-aged man got out.

As if by programming, everyone looked stunned as they looked at the man.

Almost immediately, everyone took a slight bow as the man got out of the car.

Ethan, who was the only new person in Babylon, could not understand what was going on.

He looked at the man. The same man he had met on the very first day he was released.

The man walked and stood right in front of Ethan.

Everyone wondered what he was doing.

He knelt down and took a black card in his hand.

Everyone was utterly shocked to see this.

“Dr Ethan. I need your help to heal me. Please help me. This black card is yours if you do. Have mercy on me and heal me from my ailment, lest I die," Mr Frost said as he knelt.

Everyone around had their mouths wide agape in shock as they saw Mr Frost kneel down in front of Ethan.
