The rhythmic, aggressive pulsing of the red light in the bunker was the only thing louder than the frantic thudding of Ramon’s heart. Beatriz lay slumped against the cold concrete, her skin now translucent, the obsidian-colored veins spider-webbing across her neck like lightning frozen in glass.

"Beatriz? Hey, talk to me," Ramon pleaded, his hands hovering over her shoulders. "Don't you dare go quiet on me now. We’re in the bunker, we’re safe, remember?"

She didn't respond. Her eyes were fixed on a point somewhere beyond the physical world, her breathing so shallow it barely moved the fabric of her cloak.

"Beatriz!" He grabbed her shoulders, giving her a gentle, desperate shake. "Wake up! I didn't drag you through a graveyard of ghosts just for you to turn into a statue!"

[ WARNING: SUBJECT BEATRIZ CRITICAL. ]

[ PLAGUE ADVANCEMENT: PHASE 3. ]

[ TIME TO CRYSTALLIZATION: 58 MINUTES. ]

Ramon spun on the interface, his face twisted in a snarl. "Shut up! Just tell me how to stop it! You’re the one running the damn show, aren't you?"

The text didn't flicker, but a new, cold line of script scrolled into view.

[ SYSTEM NOTICE: HOST IS ATTEMPTING TO ALTER PREDETERMINED OUTCOMES. ]

[ WARNING: INTERFERENCE WILL RESULT IN SYSTEM REJECTION. ]

[ HEALING IS NOT A FUNCTION OF THE NECROMANTIC PATH. ]

"I don't care about the path!" Ramon screamed at the air. He turned back to Beatriz, pressing his ear to her chest. Her heartbeat was erratic, a stuttering, metallic click that sent a jolt of terror through his spine.

"Listen to me," he whispered, his voice trembling as he gripped her hands. They felt like jagged stones, cold and unyielding. "I’m going to fix this. You told me this place feeds on heat. You said it’s a stagnation. If I can’t draw the rot out, I’ll force the life in. I have to."

He closed his eyes, centering his focus. He could feel the violet energy coiled within his marrow—the same energy he had used to summon the soldier earlier. It was a hungry, demanding force, but he grabbed onto it with everything he had, forcing it to bend to his will.

"You’re going to be okay," he murmured, more to himself than to her. "I’m the bridge, right? So let me be a damn bridge."

He pressed his palms against her chest, right over her heart. He imagined the violet glow as a conduit. He wasn't trying to take; he was trying to give. He pushed his own stamina, his own vitality, deep into the fractured obsidian veins.

Zzzzt.

The reaction was instantaneous. A blinding, searing heat erupted between his palms.

[ WARNING: VITALITY TRANSFER DETECTED. ]

[ CRITICAL ALERT: HOST IS DEPLETING LIFE FORCE TO SUSTAIN ANCHOR. ]

[ ACTION PROHIBITED. TERMINATING LINK. ]

"Get… out… of my way!" Ramon roared, sweat pouring down his face, his vision tunneling into dark, static-filled circles.

He felt his own strength being siphoned away, his lungs burning as if he were breathing in liquid fire. The exhaustion was absolute, a crushing weight that threatened to pull his knees out from under him.

"Ramon…?"

The whisper was faint, barely audible over the hum of the system. Ramon blinked, his eyes stinging with moisture. Beatriz was looking at him, her gaze struggling to focus.

"Don't talk," Ramon gasped, his voice raspy and thin. "Just… just keep breathing. I’ve got you."

"You're… you're burning up," she managed to say, her voice cracking. She looked at his hands, where the violet light was bleeding out of his skin, weaving into her own. "Stop it. You’ll kill yourself. The system… it’s going to break you."

"Let it break me," Ramon spat, his jaw clenched tight. "It’s my soul, not yours. I’m not losing you to some… some buggy game interface."

[ ERROR: SYSTEM PARAMETERS EXCEEDED. ]

[ JUDGMENT PROTOCOL INITIATED. ]

The blue and red lights in the room began to strobe, a chaotic, nauseating dance that painted the bunker walls in flickering, impossible colors. Ramon felt a strange, cold pressure behind his eyes—like a needle pressing into his brain.

"Ramon, stop!" Beatriz grabbed his wrists, her touch still unnaturally cool, but he could feel the pulse in her arm finally stabilizing, the jagged obsidian lines on her skin slowing their advance.

"I can’t," he panted, his head drooping forward. "If I stop, the crystals come back. I can feel them… they’re waiting for the gap."

"You're an idiot," she whispered, her eyes softening despite the agony written across her face. "Why? Why do this for me?"

"Because," Ramon laughed, a hollow, broken sound, "someone has to be the variable. If I play by their rules, we both turn into ghosts. I’m not doing that."

The pressure in his head reached a crescendo, a ringing that drowned out the sound of the world. The interface flickered violently, text scrolling so fast it was illegible.

[ JUDGMENT: HOST HAS EXHIBITED NON-COMPLIANT EMPATHY. ]

[ STATUS: REEVALUATING CONTRACTUAL OBLIGATION. ]

[ WARNING: PENALTY MAY BE SEVERE. ]

Ramon felt his grip on the energy waver. The violet light, once a steady, controlled stream, began to thrash and lash out, sparks jumping from his fingertips to the cold stone floor.

"Whatever the price is," Ramon wheezed, looking up at the glowing text, "bring it on. Just keep her alive."

The bunker seemed to groan. The very air, heavy with the scent of ozone and rot, began to swirl around them. Ramon felt himself slipping. His heart—the physical, biological heart that had been beating in his chest since he woke up in that pit—seemed to skip a beat, then another.

"Ramon, your eyes…" Beatriz’s voice sounded miles away.

He didn't need to see his reflection to know. He could feel the violet hue bleeding into his vision, turning the world into a landscape of stark, monochromatic shadows and burning, brilliant light.

"It’s fine," he whispered, his body collapsing forward until his forehead rested against her shoulder. "I’m here."

[ JUDGMENT COMPLETE. ]

[ RE-CALIBRATING NECROMANTIC PATH. ]

[ WARNING: HOST HAS INCURRED A DEBT OF VITALITY. ]

[ PENALTY: ??? ]

The final notification hung in the air like a guillotine. The room went silent. The strobe lights ceased. The violet energy faded from his hands, leaving his skin pale and trembling.

Ramon slumped completely against her, his energy reserves hitting absolute zero. He felt the darkness rising to meet him, a cold, familiar void that had been chasing him since the first moment he crawled out of the earth.

"Beatriz?" he mumbled, his voice fading into the hum of the bunker’s damp walls.

"I'm here," she said, her voice stronger, steadier. She held him, her hands still cool, but no longer crystalline, no longer jagged. "You stubborn, stupid idiot. I'm here."

He couldn't see her anymore. The darkness had taken the room, but he could feel the steady, rhythmic beat of her heart against his chest. It was a life he had bought, a trade he had made without asking for the cost.

As he drifted, the final words of the system echoed in his mind, not as text, but as a low, resonant growl that vibrated in his very marrow.

[ DEBT RECORDED. SOUL ANCHORING TIED TO SUBJECT. ]

[ CONSEQUENCES PENDING. ]

He didn't care. He was tired, so tired, but the weight of the girl in his arms was real. He had defied the system, and for a few precious, fleeting moments in a dead world, that was enough.

The bunker went quiet. Outside, the wind howled through the basalt pillars of the wasteland, carrying the distant, rhythmic march of the Grave-Wards. But inside, there was only the sound of two hearts, beating in a synchronization that shouldn't have been possible in a graveyard.

Ramon let go, sliding into the abyss, waiting to see what the penalty for mercy would be.

Ramon gripped the jagged sliver of obsidian so tightly his knuckles turned white. The key pulsed against his palm, a rhythmic throb that seemed to echo the very foundations of the ruined city outside. He stepped out of the bunker, the cold wind whipping his hair across his face, but he didn't shiver. He just looked down at the shard.“So, that’s it? A piece of rock is going to get us into the Spire?” Beatriz leaned against the doorframe, her legs still trembling slightly. She looked at the key with a mixture of curiosity and deep-seated apprehension.Ramon tilted his hand, catching the faint, dying light of the violet sky. “It’s not just a rock, Beatriz. Look at the edges. See how the geometry shifts when I tilt it?”Beatriz stepped closer, squinting. “It looks like… map coordinates? Or a circuit board? I can’t tell if it’s etched or if it’s glowing from the inside.”“It’s a resonance frequency,” Ramon said, his voice dropping into that strange, focused tone he’d been using since his

It pressed against Ramon’s eardrums until they hummed with the phantom sound of ringing bells. It didn't come from the air; it vibrated directly inside the marrow of Ramon’s bones. "You truly are a persistent curiosity."Ramon tried to scramble backward, but his limbs felt like leaden weights. The North Gate loomed ahead, a jagged tear in the perimeter wall of the garrison. Ramon leaned against a rusted support beam, his lungs burning with every inhalation of the metallic, thin air."You look like you’re about to fold in half, kid," Beatriz remarked, her voice softer than it had been hours ago. She was leaning against the same beam, keeping her weight off her healing legs. "We’re close to the transit zone. There’s a bunker there. Old, but shielded.""I’m fine," Ramon wheezed, though his knees gave a treacherous wobble. "Just... the system is acting up again. It’s like it’s trying to download a library into my brain."Beatriz glanced at the faint, flickering violet light dancing in his eyes. "Does it hurt? The download?""It’s like a migraine caused by a lightning strike," Ramon said, rubbing his temples. "But at least it’s not screaming at me to eat you anymore. That’s a win in my book.""High standards," she chuckled, a dry sound that barely cracked the silence of the ruin

The heavy iron door groaned on rusted hinges, a sound that seemed to scrape against the very air of the wasteland. Ramon hauled it open, his muscles protesting the strain, and stepped out into the dim, violet-hued twilight of the ruins. The air here was thin, smelling of ozone and pulverized stone.Beatriz followed, her movements still tentative, her hand hovering near the hilt of her blade. She scanned the horizon, her eyes darting between the jagged basalt pillars that looked like the teeth of a buried giant."You really think we can just walk through this sector?" Beatriz asked, her voice low. "The ruins of the old garrison aren't just empty space. They're heavy with the kind of echoes that don't like to be disturbed."Ramon checked the interface. The blue glow was steady now, a calming influence that hummed in his peripheral vision. "I don't have a map, Beatriz. But the system is pulsing. It’s pointing toward the Spire, and the shortest line is right through those barracks.""It’s

It's a parasite, not a compass."Ramon dropped his hand, his expression twisting into a mask of frustration. "It wants me to… it wants me to do something, Beatriz. Something bad. I’m not going to let it."Beatriz let out a dry, hacking laugh that quickly turned into a cough
