Lois's words hung in the air as if she had delivered a death sentence. She publicly broke off her marriage with Ethan to be with his best friend, Damian.
Ethan stared at her, his mind refusing to process what he had just heard. "Lois, no. Tell me you don't mean that. Don't abandon everything we've built together for him." "I've given you everything, Ethan," she said, her voice shaking with years of frustration. "I stood by you when your career ended. I stayed when the money ran out. I believed in you when no one else would. And what did you give me? Nothing. Just broken promises and a life I never wanted." She stepped toward Damian, putting some distance between herself and Ethan. "I'm fed up with being poor. I'm tired of watching everyone else succeed while we drown in debt. I just can't keep doing this anymore, Ethan. I'm done." Ethan's voice broke as he reached out to her in desperation. "Lois, please. We can fix this. Just give me more time—" "Time?" she chuckled bitterly. "I've given you five years, Ethan. Five years of my life, completely wasted. I won't wait any longer. As of this moment, you’re on your own." Damian stepped closer, resting a possessive hand on Lois's lower back. "You heard her, Ethan. She wants me now, so give it up." Ethan gritted his teeth in rage. "You bastard, you betrayed me! I thought you were my friend. How could you do this to me and take my wife away from me?" Damian scoffed before pulling out a chequebook and a pen. "I never betrayed you, old friend," he said while scribbling some figures on it. "I only offered a solution to your problem at a fair price." A brief pause. "Here," Damian said, tearing a slip from the chequebook and tossing it to Ethan. "As promised, that's $50 million. Take it with you and leave Lois for good. You can start a new life somewhere else. That's more than you've ever given her." Ethan bent down slowly and picked up the slip from the floor. There it was, in Damian's own handwriting: $50 million. With that amount, he could pay off his debt and escape poverty. However, it came with a cost. The cost of losing his wife to his best friend. "No," Ethan said, his voice raw. "You can keep your filthy money. I don't want it." To everyone's surprise, Ethan ripped the cheque into pieces. Even Damian was caught off guard. Did he really tear up a $50 million cheque just for his pride and ego? This angered Damian. "You fool," Damain snapped sharply. "No wonder you're poor. You'll never be successful in your life for as long as you live." "You could have taken the money," Lois said angrily to Ethan. "Why are you acting so stubborn? You'll never have another opportunity like this again. This is why I am leaving you. You and that stubborn pride of yours." Ethan stood still, his nails digging into his palms as he clenched his fists tightly. Tell me, Lois, is this really what you really want? I'm only going to ask once: do you choose me or Damian?" Lois planted a hand on her hip. "I'm not backing down from my decision, Ethan. I'm going to be Damian's woman. There's nothing you can say or do that will change my mind." Damian smiled smugly as he wrapped his hands around Lois's waist. "You've got your answers, Ethan. My lawyers will draft the divorce papers and contact you shortly. However, you won't be getting any money from me. You lost your chance the moment you tore my cheque." "Very well," Ethan said before turning to Lois. "Goodbye, Lois." Lois crossed her arms and looked away. She didn't say anything. Ethan painfully picked up her wedding ring from the floor and slipped it into his pocket. Then, without sparing even a second glance, he hobbled toward the exit using his crutches. The crowd around him split apart like the Red Sea as he made his way through. Their murmuring reached his ears. "Can you believe it? Lois actually left him for Damian." "Could you really blame her? She devoted her prime years to him, despite living in poverty." "She lasted longer with Ethan than I had given her credit for. I would have divorced him after just one year." "I feel no pity for Ethan. He got a sweet deal for $50 million, but his stupid pride held him back." "What a bum. It's a good thing Lois left him. She deserves better." Ethan continued walking in silence until he reached the exit, but the whispers he heard lingered in his mind. Everyone supported his wife when she left him for Damian. Not a single person rose to defend him or call out Damian for betraying him. * * * * As Ethan forced his way through the heavy exit doors, the night air hit him like a slap. While everyone was inside at the reunion, a heavy rain had started, drumming loudly on the road and cars. But Ethan didn't care. He stepped off the walkway and into the rain, his crutches pressing gently into the puddles that had already gathered. Within seconds, his cheap suit was soaked through, the fabric clinging to his skin. Water poured over his face, mixing with the tears he fought so hard to keep from falling. Inside, his heart burned with a sadness so intense it felt suffocating. As he walked on, he imagined his old classmates gathered there, toasting Damian and Lois while laughing at his downfall. Just then, Ethan lost his footing. His crutches slipped out from beneath him, and he fell heavily onto the wet ground. The impact sent a sharp jolt of pain through his injured knee, causing him to gasp. For a moment, he just lay face down in the rain, feeling defeated and broken. But then, something inside him changed. With trembling hands, he reached out and grabbed his crutches, pulling himself up inch by inch. The rain kept pounding down on him relentlessly, yet he didn't stop. \ "I'll make them pay," he growled through gritted teeth. His hair was plastered to his forehead, with water dripping into his eyes. He remembered the humiliation and sneers from all his old classmates. He remembered Lois's and Damian's betrayal. Ethan bit down so hard on his teeth that he tasted blood. He planted his crutches firmly and pushed himself up, his body shaking with rage. "Every single one of them," he hissed, his voice raw and venomous. "Every single person in that room. I'll become so rich and powerful that they'll all kneel and beg." Lightning tore across the sky, lighting up his face for a brief, terrible moment. Suddenly, his phone began to buzz. At first, Ethan ignored it. What could possibly matter now? His wife had left him, and his best friend had betrayed him. His life was completely wrecked. However, the phone buzzed again. And again. Frowning, Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. The screen was wet, but it was still working. He wiped the water away with his sleeve and stared at the notification. His heart froze like ice. Credit Alert +$500,000,000,000,000.00 USD Your wallet has received a new deposit.Latest Chapter
Fear of the past
Lois answered the call with a forced smile. "Hey! It's been a while. Did you receive the wedding invitation I sent?"She listened for a moment, her smile fading as the voice on the other end spoke rapidly. The caller was clearly excited, sharing the latest gossip from their high school group chat."You wouldn't believe what happened tonight," the classmate said, her voice buzzing with excitement. "Something crazy went down at Paradise Hotel."Lois's brow furrowed. "What do you mean?""Derek Simmons," the classmate said. "You remember Derek, right? He was at the reunion. The one who was laughing at Ethan with everyone else."Lois's stomach tightened at the mention of Ethan's name. "What about him?""He was at Paradise Hotel tonight with his girlfriend. Apparently, he got into an argument with one of the staff and made a huge scene. And then..."The classmate paused dramatically. "Ethan showed up."Lois froze. "What?""I know, right? Apparently, he's been staying at Paradise Hotel. And
An obsessed hater
The shock spreading across Derek's face brought a wide smile to Ethan's face. It excited him to watch this fool getting humbled. "What's the matter, Derek?" he asked, tilting his head. "You look as if you've just seen a ghost." Derek's face contorted with rage. His hands clenched into fists at his sides, and before anyone could react, he lunged forward, grabbing Ethan by the lapels of his suit. "What the hell did you do?!" Derek screamed, shaking Ethan violently. "You bastard! I just lost my job! What did you do?!" The lobby erupted into chaos. The young attendant gasped. Brown stepped forward, his hand reaching for his phone. The security guards who had been standing nearby began to move. But Ethan didn't flinch. He just reached up and grabbed Derek's hands. Ethan's grip was like iron and impossibly strong. One by one, he slowly removed Derek's fingers from his suit. Derek's eyes became large. He tried to resist, but Ethan's strength was too strong. His hands were forced o
The loser part 2
Ethan stared at Derek, the insult hanging in the air between them like a foul odor. For a moment, he was transported back six months: back to the reunion, back to the banquet hall where everyone had laughed at his expense. He could still hear it ringing in his ears, the cruel, mocking laughter of people he had once called friends and classmates. He could still see Lois's cold eyes as she threw her wedding ring at him. He could still feel the sting of Damian's betrayal, which had shattered his entire world to pieces. That night had haunted him for six months. It had followed him to Switzerland, crept into his dreams, and whispered in his ear during the quiet moments of rehabilitation. But today, something was different. He was not the same man he had been before. The old Ethan would have shrunk back in shame. He would have endured the insult in silence, too broken to fight back. But the new Ethan was not a broken man. He was stronger and more confident than ever before. He stepped
The loser
Brown stood outside the Paradise Hotel, the evening breeze ruffling his tailored suit. He took a quick look at his watch; the time was 9:42 PM. The auction should be over by now.Just then, a black Cadillac Escalade pulled up to the curb, its tinted windows reflecting the city lights. Two bodyguards stepped out, one from the driver's seat and the other from the passenger side. Together, they approached and opened the rear door.Ethan Carter stepped out.For the first time that evening, he took off his dark glasses and slipped them into the breast pocket of his overcoat. His sharp eyes met with Brown's as Brown drew closer, bowed slightly with a warm smile spreading across his face. "Welcome back, Master Wayne. How did the auction go?" Brown asked. "It went well," Ethan said as he walked past him. "I trust you'll take care of the paperwork for me."Brown nodded and fell into step beside him as they made their way to the hotel entrance. "Just leave it to me, sir. The previous owners
The refinery auction part 2
The auctioneer walked onto the stage, dressed in a black suit with a silver microphone attached to his lapel. He smiled warmly at the assembled crowd. "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to tonight's auction. As you know, we have a unique opportunity before us: one of the few remaining independent oil refineries in the region is now up for sale." He gestured to a large screen behind him, which displayed images of the refinery. It was a vast network of steel towers, pipelines, and storage tanks. The auctioneer went on: "Whoever acquires this refinery will control a major part of the local energy market." Damian leaned forward, his eyes lighting up with interest. Buying this refinery would take his company to the next level. It would grant him a seat with the real power players: oil barons, energy magnates, and elite networks. He glanced at the newcomer, sitting still with sunglasses hiding his face. Damian smirked. Whoever this mystery bidder was, they wouldn't stand a chance in a b
The refinery auction
Later that night, the auction hall at the Meridian Convention Center was filled with the richest businessmen in the region. At the pre-auction reception, oil magnates, real estate tycoons, tech entrepreneurs, and old-money aristocrats all gathered for tonight's event. The air was filled with the scent of fine cologne and soft music. Damian Rhodes arrived with Lois on his arm, wearing his finest suit. When he walked in, people’s heads turned, and a group of well-wishers quickly surrounded him. Many of them were business associates and acquaintances. "Hey, Damian! Good to see you, old chap." "Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! I'll be there, of course." "Heard you're bidding on that refinery. What wild luck. The refinery is as good as yours, Rhodes. No one else stands a chance." Damian shook hands, accepted praise, and exchanged pleasantries. Lois stood beside him, her emerald dress catching the light, her smile polished and perfect. She played the role of the billion
